Programming :: Creating A Text Based Menu Structure In Bash?
May 15, 2009
Is it possible to create a text based menu layout in bash were it is possible to browse through. The menu list should look something like this:
----------------------------------------
user: root
colour: blue
number: 4
animal: dog
----------------------------------------
At the start the cursor should blink at the r from root so that text can be entered. When pressing the enter the cursor should go to the b from blue and so on. the imported thing is that all the text is visible also beyond the position from the cursor.

Options:A double linked list with fixed size character arrays. New nodes will be added when previous ones get filled. Dynamic arrays using realloc(). Linked list has the disadvantage of not having an O(1) search like an array but I think using realloc() will be more dangerous since it moves the whole block to a new location and if the new location is not big enough to hold the whole block, realloc fails !! this case will not occur with the linked list since its nodes are scattered.

I am writting a program that reads a text file (music.txt) & stores it in a Data Structure. I am a novice learning over the internet so I this is something I have never done. How do I do this?
Quote:
Write a program that reads the data from the music.txt file and store it in a data structure. To implement this data structure you must use an array of songs and each song must be represented by a struct with appropriate fields. So far all I can do is open to file to read it (very simple I know) but so far is it correct?
Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <strstream>
[code]....

i am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline
Code:
variable=$(cat file.txt)
The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:
Code:
for line in $variable
do
echo $line
# Other commands
done
how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0

list the used variables.
1. display menu until user quits the script
2. menu would give following options to
a. create backup
b. restore files from backup
c. quit
3. for option a or b user would be required to specify the files and name of the archive]
4. has option to be run with use of parameters if that is the case it will not display menu but carry out required task unless it was not possible to do
5. incase of any errors are encountered it would call external scrpit that would display custom disigned error message.

I wrote a script for capturing port 5060 with tshark.Well, it's only a line, but I needed to send a positional var, and I couldn't do it with an alias. Now I need that script to run as a service, so I can start/stop. (Using CentOS)
Code:
#!/bin/bash
#
# capture service
[code]....
One more thing, my goal is to start/stop the service with
Code:
service myservice start|stop
Is that possible? I read that I must use chkconfig.

I'm trying to call a specific variable based on a user selection. For example:
Code: Select a file:
[1] foo.tar
[2] bar.tar
Enter a selection: I have already coded each possible selection to have its own variable. If the user selects 2 I need to select $SELECTED_TAR2, or if they select 1 I need to select $SELECTED_TAR1 and then do something like this behind the scenes:
Code: cp /home/user/$SELECTED_TAR2 /home/user/backup/$SELECTED_TAR2
I was thinking something like this:
Code: echo "Enter a selection: "
read -e SELECTED_NUMBER
cp /home/user/$SELECTED_TAR$SELECTED_NUMBER /home/user/backup
[code]....

I'm writing a bash shell script that among various other things will traverse through a directory with hundreds of files and rename those who match a pattern found in a config file. It's expected that only about one in ten files will actually match, and those who don't, will simply just be ignored for this purpose.
This should for instance cause the file "dBase program file December 1987.prg" to be renamed "Clipper source code December 1987.prg", and conversely "C++ source August 1996.cpp" to be renamed "C source code August 1996.cpp" etc.A sample file such as "Random Data File.dat" should not be renamed here since it's not mentioned in the config file..What is the quickest, most elegant way to do this in bash?I am thinking of using bash's built-in regex matching combined with the /bin/rename utility, but don't quite know how to get started to catch this..I guess there are plenty ways of doing this in perl and elsewhere as well, but since this has to integrate into a pre-existing bash script, that's what I'm looking for.Anyone out there with a spare moment to offer a hint in the right direction?

I have very little linux experience. And need some help with a bash script. I need to a script I can set cron to run to sort files out of a holding folder into final folders. It doesn't necessarily have to be bash, but I think it would be sufficient for this. File names are formatted as such when created: Dest-Date-Time-CID-Destination# I want the files to be moved from a all in one holding folder to a folder structure like this.
.../storage/year/month/day/Destination#/VarX(type)/hour/CID/'File'
I would need an if/else if/else statement to say if Dest = A set VarX = B If for example the file name was
infinity-20100927-17:00-1112223333-4445556666.wav
I would like the above file to end up moved from
.../holding
to
.../storage/2010/09/27/4445556666/Inbound/17/1112223333/infinity-20100927-17:00-1112223333-4445556666.wav
So the script will need to make directories based on information in the file name which is delimited by single dashes. Then move files from the holding folder to the newly created "sorted" folders.

I am trying to create a custom service to manage a minecraft server what runs in a screen session (this is to allow easy console access as opposed to running it as a nohup background process). I am hitting two main issues with this script so far and wondering if anybody is able to shed some light on it, considering I am far from the greatest BASH scripter on Earth.
The issues are related to start and stop. the first issue with start is there is a command run "screen -dmS minecraft java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar /minecraft/minecraft.jar nogui" what doesn't appear to work, however when run from console (copy and pasted) this command seems to run perfectly. I am uncertain as to why this is not working within the script. Also if run from a script in /minecraft it also appears to work but in the minecraftd script I have created at /etc/init.d it does not work. I think the issue might be related to the location but am not certain on it, nor how to resolve it.
the second issue with stop is that it works sometimes but at other times it does not, overall it seems to work about 30~50% of the time. When it works it passes a couple of disconnection messages to the screen session and then gives the stop command (the command to gracefully terminate the minecraft server). It seems to work more often when using screen that I attach to the minecraft session while it is running but really not sure if this is an issue with my scripting or an issue with how I am passing things to screen.
The full code in /etc/init.d/minecraftd is below
Code:
#!/bin/bash

I have a command that outputs n lines of text, and I want to place each line into an array element, but I can't seem to get the syntax correct
So my command is this:
cat $configfile | sed -n '/cluster:'$clustername'/,/cluster/ p' | awk /host/
Which produces many lines depending on the value of $clustername. I'd like to get each line as elements of an array.

I've been trying to figure out a way to more easily color text in Perl like I do on Bash on a Linux box. In bash, what I'll do is set color variables up to equal the escape sequence, then echo out with escape seqeunces to print it exactly how I want it. Typically I'll want a character or a word in a different color, not the whole line. For example
echo -n -e "My face is turning ${RED}red${UNCOLOR} like a lobster." In Perl with the term::ANSIColor module, it seems to just do a line. Am I being dense? Is there a way that I can do it like I do it in BASH that's fairly easy to read after the fact?

I have a little problem about string in Snort alerting. I understood about Snort alerting saved in /var/log/snort/alert and Snort will add a new entry if there was a attack from anywhere. Then here's my problem. Because it has a lot of file on it, all I want to do is parse that string in snort alert then make into simply log files with it. I'm getting confused with Snort alert and parse that file.
Here's the simple algorithm; Snort get the alert <- parse the alert with my parameter which I've configured with bash (ip address, dest, kind of attack and time) <- then sent that parse alert into new text (let's called snortsent.txt) <- after ten alerts then clear the text then waiting again until the Snort alert go on -> back to snort alert. Here's the sample of my snort alert: (/var/log/snort/alert)

Person A
100
200
300

700

1000
900
800
700
600
500
400
300
200
100
How would I go about reading the values for each Person, then being able to perform mathematical equations for each Person (finding the sum for example)?
