Apr 8, 2010this is my first post here at LinuxQuestions and to start it off I have a question that may be simple. I will provide as much information that I can to help explain what it is I am trying to accomplish. Information: My server is running CentOS latest version I am booting to GRSEC
My problem is that my phone's IP address changes every 10-30 minutes, and my server is IP whitelisted. So in order for me to login to my server I need to somehow record my Phones IP address into the "/etc/hosts.allow file". Getting the IP of my phone is simple, for this I set up an account at dyndns.org. My phone successfully updates it's ip to the site whenever it changes. For this example I will use "linuxquestions.dyndns.org" In order to get my phones IP I will run a "nslookup" on linuxquestions.dyndns.org every 10 minutes. For this I will set a cron job to run every 10 minutes.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Works But Can't Log Online?
Jul 6, 2010I just installed the 10.04 on my laptop a compaq 6510b that was was running xp. Ubuntu cant seem to connect to the internet unless i have it hooked up via ethernet cable but the wifi recognizes my network. in windows i use to log in via the wirless network to my boardband connection.

Apr 11, 2011I've got a bit of tricky situation with a Red Hat box, our network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet. I've exported its address using "export http_proxy=http://usernameassword@server_iport" and to test I ran a wget against www.google.co.za and got a response, but using elinks to connect to google gives a proxy requires authentication error. It cant possibly be the credentials as wget can connect. I've confirmed that the proxy was exported by running "env | grep -i proxy", I also tried appending that line on both "/etc/profile" and/or "/root/.bash_profile" with no luck. one other thing I noticed is that passing those arguments directly to elinks works, not only this but "ssh -X server_ip_address" then running firefox& and giving it the proxy address also works. Is the any other way to make this line global, meaning to tell all applications that require internet connection to use the proxy? The server is sitting at a remote location and I only have access to a shell.

At first it just didn't work but after deactivating IPv6 I got it working: firefox can connect to the internet. What troubles me is the online update with Update Applet. Jul 6, 2010I am finally coming around to selling my iMac G3s and eMac. I will reformat the drives in them and put on Puppy Linux for the iMacs and Xubuntu on the eMac. If I can, I will repair OS X on them all and will dual boot if possible. All of this will be done using the Intel iMac via Firewire. I would like to know if there is a way to make these machines any faster (without money) and "safer" so the next owner feels sure they won't be failing on them soon.

Feb 20, 2011First time on here and my only previous linux experience is a ongoing Mythbuntu project. I have access to allot of open air event sites where ASDL is pitiful. Mobile internet at these places is generally quite good though. So I have been thinking of building a box that has a dongle from each of the networks and load balancing these connections to be distributed on LAN to AP/AP's. On some site where it would not be paid for by the event so I would also want to charge for access. Is there a hotspot server build that will support credit card charges (I know very little about this bit), limit the amount of bandwidth to each user and do the load balancing bit for me?
This may seem like a poor service to charge for but the alternative is an 8mb satellite or 2mb ASDL which about five offices share. If your on site and your network is bad, this could be a real life saver.To further increase the service if it works well, It would be good for a customer to be able to log on to several servers across the site and still get access. I'm happy to pay for a distribution if it does everything I need. My searches seem to be fruitless.[URL] but there doesn't seem to be any credit card payment support.

My webserver accesses a backend mySQL server using CentOS5
The last week, I have been getting a "page Load Error" on my web server whilst others told me they are getting a "broken link" error when they try to access my web site. It has been working fine for the last 12 months until last week.
ADSL, modem and router okay according to service provider (verizon)
I can ping my IP address and my domain name.
# netstat -tap
shows http and https both processes running.
# service httpd restart
no issues
I shut down firewall and tried again, but got the same "page load error".

May 5, 2011I'm trying to write a Perl script that will go out to a website, log in, pull up a query page, fill-in and submit the query, extract a few specific lines from the query results, and finally place that output into a file. I'm having difficulty with the log in portion. It appears that rather than using the built-in Apache authentication, the developer decided to write their own authentication scheme that uses cookies.
I setup a cookie jar but I'm not certain I'm actually getting and keeping the cookie. When I try to go to a page after the log in page I get an error saying I'm not logged in or my session has expired. Here's the code as I have it thus far.

Nov 23, 2010So a friend and I are new-ish to linux (I am reasonably comfortable with basic /etc text editing, command admin). We are, however, completely new to programming and (x)html. We have a few (what we think are) interesting ideas for dynamic websites.Ideally we would like to develop our own course of study to get to the point where we have a basic understanding of programming so that our adventures in the programming of a dynamic website would be possible. Much of what we need learn to do is the following: use daily updated public-domain data from several other sites, manipulate that data algorithmically, which would then yield updating output on our site. Here is what I would like to do:
1. learn the basics of programming with a language that would teach good code habits and fundamental understanding.
2. become comfortable with (x)html
3. learn another language for the extension of (x)html into a dynamic data-heavy website.
Question could you please suggest a way about going about 1>2>3?Ideally the language of (1) would be something that would not be "wasted" just on web design etc. As a language, C really appeals to me. However, if learning this wouldn't lend itself to being helpful in learning another language for webdesign maybe I shouldn't use it(?).If (1) weren't to be C, what language would be funadmental enough to teach good coding but also be helpful in learning (3)
