Programming :: Grep Searching For Strings With (apostrophe)

Nov 10, 2010

I am trying a search for a pattern in the file. I can have any character in the pattern. I am pretty sure I will have $, ", ', ^, ` etc., The Problem I am facing is if I use "" (double quotes) to enclose the pattern, it gives special meaning to $, ^ and " within the string. I have no control over the pattern input. I am getting it from some other file. On the other hand, If I use '' (single quotes) to enclose the pattern, it gives special meaning to the ' (apostrophe) within the string and terminates the pattern prematurely. How do I disable the special meaning these characters have? For example, in perl, I could enclose the pattern within Q and E. Is there an equivalent in grep pattern expression? I could find one in the man page of grep. Is there a solution to this problem?

General :: Using Grep With Pattern File And PCRE

Sep 25, 2010

I would like to write a newline delimeted rules file using PCREs for use with the grep command. Grep has the option -f to obtain the search pattern from a file, and option -P to search using PCREs. However, these two options do not work together. The -f option only seems to work with fixed string rules.A friend previously helped me get around this limitation somehow, but I can't remember how he did it. I also would like the ability to add comments at the end of each rule in the file.

Ubuntu :: Searching WITHIN Doc - Xls - Ppt Files - Grep Is Unable To Locate Text INSIDE File Types

Sep 1, 2011

I am on Ubuntu 11.04 and using Libre Office 3.3.2 to compose new documents and am saving them using .doc, .ppt and .xls files. (due to having to share them with others who are on Windows systems)

I have a lot of doc files and I need to search for text INSIDE these files. I am perplexed with the fact that no search tool is able to search for text INSIDE these file types. "cat" can display them of course, but grep is not able to locate text INSIDE these file types. I even tried to save a .doc file as an .odt file, but no luck. The Applications>Accessories>Search for Files does not search INSIDE doc, xls or ppt with the option "Contains the text".

2. Use the values stored in the array and replace values in other text file with them

3. read line2 in the cvs file and repeat the process

4. Do above for all lines in the cvs file

for example:

file1.cvs content:

text1,text2,text3,"text 4"
a1,a2,3,"a 4"

file.txt content:

some text $array1$ some text
some text $array2$ some text

1. read line 1 - text1,text2,text3,"text 4" put each value in array X[] lines that contain spaces in cvs will have double quotes

2. read x[1] and replace value $array1$ (in file.txt) with x[1]read x[2] and replace value $array2$ (in file.txt) with x[2] and so on

Programming :: If Statement Pattern Search / End Of Pattern Special Character?

Apr 29, 2010

I have to enhance the behaviour of a backup script written in perl. I don't need to change it, what I need to do is to create a bash script that does some checks like file name and file size, execute the backup script then check if the backup files match the original files.Here's how I try to do it:

- read the files from the original files folder
- store them in an array
- search in the array the files that have a specific file extension
- store the file names that match the search pattern (I know the backup script skips some files so I can hardcode the search pattern)
- run the backup script
- read the files from the backup folder
- store them in an array
- compare the original files name and size stored in an array with those from the backup folder
- send a report email

First two fields contain first name and last name of a person. Now my requirement is to delete all those records from this file for which:

First two fields does not contain any alphabet.

For e.g i have below mentioned records in file:

gaurav||gandhi||123||456||789
#a%bcd||123abc||89|90||91
12345||@@@||89||123||234
***||!!!!||98||76||90

Now, last two lines should be removed from this file since first two fields does not contain any alphabet for these two records.

Programming :: File Renaming Based On A Pattern Match

Jan 8, 2011

What I am attempting to do is rename some television shows into the format that my PVR will understand for the naming convention. I have a script that cleans them up about 95%, now I just cant figure out the last little detail..

For example: NCIS_01.mkv
I think it can be done in sed, but I just figure out how. I need it to be renamed to: NCIS_s01e01.mkv

How can I make sed (or something else) match the last "_" and any numbers after it until the period and then insert text between them reliably?

Depending on the show, it can be something like: This_show_name_243.avi so I need it to be more flexible than I can figure out how to do..

General :: Grep - Searching For Class References In C++ Using Regular Expression?

May 28, 2010

I'm trying to math all class references in a C++ file using grep with regular expression. I'm trying to know if a specific include is usuless or not, so I have to know if there is a refence in cpp. I wrote this RE that searches for a reference from class ABCZ, but unfortunately it isn't working as I espected:

grep -E '^[^(/*)(//)].*[^a-zA-Z]ABCZ[]*[*(<:;,{& ]'

^[^(/*)(//)] don't math comments in the begging of the line ( // or /* )
.* followed by any character
[^a-zA-Z] do not accept any caracter before the one I'm searching (like defABCZ)
[]* any white space (I can have something like ABCZ var; )
[*(<:;,{& ] followed by ( * < : ; , & { (I cant get #define "ABCZ.h" or ABCZdef for example)

Well, I can get patterns like this:

class Test: public ABCZ{
class Test: public ABCZ {
class Test : public ABCZ<T>

Programming :: Shell Script Searching File In A Directory?

Feb 23, 2011

I am trying to search particular directory which has files with extensions like .html,.mp3,.xml etc I have a list of such files What I am doing in my script is

for file_name in `find /home/ -name index.html -o -name song.mp3 -o -name help.xml`;
do
if [ $file!='' ]
then

[code]....

I have around 100+ files name with some particular extension , this code works fine if the directory name does not have any special character in it like " "(white character) .

It is failing to give the output. IF I run the find command on the console the I am getting the correct file name with location

/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/config/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/pop.mp3
/home/user2/public_html/index test/pop.mp3
/home/user2/public_html/index test/web.xml
/home/user2/public_html/song.mp3

If I echo the file name from the script Then output is little missed match when a directory name has special char like " "

/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/config/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/movie.mp3
/home/user1/public_html/mediawiki/pop.mp3

[code]....

I am not sure what is wrong with script or my code .. Does shell have un-controlled behavior of manipulating the output of any command.
