May 5, 2011I have a program that I run from the terminal that requires manual input (it's matlab in mex debugging mode, matlab -Dgdb, which starts the GNU C debugger with its own custom settings).
Every time I run this program I always type in the same few commands in the program's interactive shell before I actually start working (for example: run -nojvm; stop at mexFunction; continue). I want to avoid typing these commands and I thought I could do this with shell scripting, saving the commands in the mycommands file, then running: myprogram < mycommands
The problem is that this runs all the commands and then exits the program. I want it to run the commands and return control to me so I can run my commands. Is there a way to tell the shell to use a file or a string as the input to a program then immediately return control to the user without the exiting the program?

May 13, 2011Have this script which is reading in a series of files, one at a time with while-do-done loop, each file goes through various greps/awk's where this info is then saved to various files for later use. i.e....

In one of the grep/awk's the output (currently) are 2 columns (min max), i.e....| awk '{print $1, $2}' | sort -u which outputs (e.g.)
The number of "min max" pairs varies from file to file. Want to output a single column of unique numbers from the min max pairs & get the number of them for input to a file...i.e...
Where <PROCESS> is some process/technique that will generate a single column of integers (increment of 1) to pipe into the next one (sort -u)
i.e. (example from above)
Have tried command seq - only works for single pair input i.e.
Is there any command like seq etc which will output a single column based on a input of min max numbers (increment 1) to pipe onwards to next command?

Nov 28, 2010I am new to writing shell scripts. So, please bare with me. I am currently trying to write a shell script which will read the directory path as input from user and will traverse the Dir tree to find all available audio and video files. I have tried to write as much as I could but I don't know where I am making mistake as I get some files to be audio file which are actully tar balls. On the second note there are some files which video but script shows them to be audio. And, some video files are completely skipped. I am giving the shell script below so that you can see. I am using two external files as source which I am attaching.

read gregyr gregmo gregdy greghr gregmn gregsc This lets the user input a date and time, such as 2011 06 21 15 12 45, and have each number assigned to their corresponding variable. Later in the program, these variables are put into an equation, and then the terminal spits out the answer. Now I have to have the program read all of the lines from a text file, which is in this format, assign the variables.

Jun 9, 2011I'm building a Linux From Scratch system and partially automating it. I will likely want to do it again, and I would like to try to almost completely automate it.
My current approach is a script that takes an input file and sequentially runs each line in a new instance of bash. If one fails, it gives me the number of the step that failed so that I can use the "--step" option to resume after I fixed the issue.
This has some problems:
A varible created on one line will not be accessible on the next line. This is because each line is run in a separate shell (the reason for this is so that the commands in the input file and the script's internal variables can't interfere). You can't switch users or use chroot, again because each line is run in a separate shell.
What would be nice is to be able to start a bash process in the background and send commands to its stdin. I guess that a named pipe would work, but the named pipe will be gone after a chroot. Is there a way to do it without relying on the filesystem? Also, how do I know if the command failed?

Nov 6, 2010The two shell scripts (t1prog and t2prog) are given below they are working fine. The input for the first program is 't1.det' and for second program is 't1.rnaml'. These two input files are in 'dir1' folder. I am executing the shell like 'sh t1prog > t1out' and 'sh t2prog > t2out' from this directory only. Then I am executing a java program 'java RNA'; for this, t1out and t2out are input files used in the program and I am getting the final output on screen.
The input files 't1.det' and 't1.rnaml' are in different folders with same name and with different values. Each folder specifies one gene sequence input files.
In mfold directory there are 5 directors and each directory contains these input files as shown below

dir1 dir2 dir3 dir4 dir5
cd dir1
t1.det t1.rnaml

for inputs in different directories and executing these and redirecting the final ouput after executing 'java RNA' statement to a file is needed.

What I want is to get the first two numbers from the first line of the file 'outfailtest', execute 'inputbashangle' with them, then move on to the first two numbers of the second line for all the lines of 'outfailtest'.

I've added gcov to the makefiles (compiling with --coverage, -fprofile-arcs, and -ftest-coverage, and linking with -lgcov). It builds fine and creates executable.gcno.
When I try to run gcov, gcov things the options belong to it:

gcov: invalid option -- 's'
Usage: gcov [OPTION]... SOURCEFILE...
When I use quotes this happens:

The command line options must remain. How can I get gcov to generate the same .gcno file it later looks for?

Aug 5, 2010Write a program that requires the user to input the name of a file as an argument. If the user fails to include one argument it should make use of a thread that handles a signal. The signal handler should tells the user Incorrect number of arguments and then calls the terminate signal on the process.
If the numbers of arguments are correct then the program should allocate memory space to the file (5MB) and create a child process that requests the user for a character that it should send to the parent. The child should keep request for data until the user keys in the character O. During each request it should pause for 10 seconds, send the character to the parent and then requesting again for another character.
The parent should get the character from the child. Do not make the parent wait for the child to finish requesting for data. Make use of pipes to facilitate communication between the parent and the child. A second child should be created to read and display data from the file. Make use of any appropriate Inter Process Communication technique to ensure that the second child and the parent do not access the file simultaneously (Mutual exclusion).

Jun 2, 2009I've been using python/bash to help myself automate things for a long time, however I am curious. One reason I use python more is because I don't quite know how to work with user input in Bash, such as getting it to ask for input and wait, and then placing that user input into a command.
Here's an example of a script I use from time to time for converting OGG video files into AVI.
How could I write this same script in Bash? Keep in mind I am mostly self taught, so I am by no means an expert programmer.

Aug 9, 2009I have a script im having some problems with, what I need is to have the system generate a random password for me and use that password when creating new users to it.
System is Debian Lenny and script is in bash.
The program is znc. I have made it so that it will generate the random password on the shell but the problem is to use it in the bnc software.
To make a password there the command is znc --makepass and look like this:
My question is now if it would be possible to put in the script so it would "answer" when it need those passwords ? the random password that is generated is in a variable called $setpass and is NOT crypted.
Or is there any other software that would be able to generate that md5 string for me ?

Jun 9, 2011I am bouncing a file across platforms (windows->solaris->mainframe), and the file is starting out with a "special" character (the registered trademark "circle R") in some of the records. This character is not in the EBCDIC character set on the MF, so it is unrecognizable. The MF developer I am working with asked if it is possible to replace the character with a specific hex value (AF) before it gets to the MF.
I was putzing around with sed, tr, etc. on the ksh command line, hoping to find an easy way to get one of them to substitute hex instead of ASCII. I have found that the usual shell utilities recognize the trademark character, so homing in on what to replace is solved. But I cannot get anything to actually substitute in the hex sequence I want. E.g. I was thinking something like...
>cat special_file | sed 's/R/AF/g'
But my version of sed does not seem to have hex "editing" capability.

I have a bash script that reads URL addresses of our internal server and then executes some test commands on them. Something like this:

After copy-pasting the URL the user taps the enter key and the script proceeds, but here comes the tricky part: I want this to work without the need to press the enter key after copy-pasting the URL.
"read -n" does not work in this case, as the URLs vary greatly in length. However, the URLs always end to the same string. They could be like "http://url1/END", "http://url2/END" and so on. So this ending string "END" could be theoretically used to recognize that the whole URL has been pasted.
