Software :: Imaging Hard Drives - Gparted To Resize The Newly Imaged Disk Accordingly
May 26, 2011
The problem is every forum I read pretty much ends up with someone suggesting DD, everyone agreeing and the threads dead-end. This is not a good solution for real world large scale usage which is what I'm trying to do. At least it doesn't appear to be unless there is some switch I have misinterpreted when invoking the command. The problem I have with it is it's super bloated and god awful slow. It tries to write out the entire partition or set of partitions (based on the choice I have made) reguardless of if any of the space had been empty, and lets say the partition I copied from was 80 GB and I copy it to a 160 GB disk/partition... I am left with an 80 GB partition and 80 GB unused space and a need to use another tool such as Gparted to resize the newly imaged disk accordingly.
Right now what I use is Norton Ghost and it can do the job I need in only a couple minutes instead of a couple hours and it sizes the partition to max size all at once. I do not want to use this program tho... The fact is in order to make ghost run at a usable speed I have to use it's Windows and not its DOS version which leaves me using something like BartPE and... that's worse than using Windows ME. Surely someone out there has noticed this is a problem and developed a better program that can at least run on par with Ghost.
why I was hoping for a Linux solution it's because I would like to use a "one stop shop" disk, so to speak, where I can boot into a small linux distro such as Puppy and have a full suite at my disposal rather than booting with one disk, wiping, rebooting with another disk, ghosting then testing everything. I suppose if anyone knows of a distro that can already do all that including a good ghost alternative already packaged I would love that.

I was trying to resize an external ntfs hard drive, so that I could make room at the front of the disk for a swap partition. At the end of the process gparted encountered an error. It couldn't see my disk again until I rebooted the system. Now, when it looks at the hard drive, it sees it as one big unpartitioned hard drive.
I'm pretty sure all the data is still there, uncorrupted. I just can't access it. How can I fix this?

I'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:
error: block relocator should have relocated 533 Warning: You should reinstall your boot loader before rebooting. Read section 4 of the Parted User documentation for more information. I am using Slackware 12.1, GNU parted 1.8.8, ext2 filesystem.
Some output that may be of use:

HP Netbook Mini 210
F14 xfce
I installed F14 xfce and using the entire disk.
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 97G 4.0G 92G 5% /
tmpfs 494M 212K 494M 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 485M 49M 211M 11% /boot
/dev/sda4 193G 8.5G 175G 5% /home
After I have installed all my programs, I need to install windows and I need visual studio. So I was thinking of taking 20 GB from the /home directory and using that for windows. I can use gparted. However, many posters on here think it is best to use gparted by booting from the disk. However, I cannot do this, as I don't have any DVD drivers. And I can't really afford to buy one just for this reason. What is the best way to do this?

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

I'm not a stranger to Ubuntu Linux and I was using it for a couple of months with no problems until last week when I turned my computer on and it would go no further than the boot screen and it said 'Error- Insert System Disk'. So I inserted the system disk (Ubuntu Linux 10.something) and after waiting 10 minutes for it to load up it said 'Installation failed, desktop session will now be run and you can try installing again'. So I tried installing whilst on a desktop session and I eventually got to step 4 of 8 and it lets me go no further. This is what step 4 of 8 is:http://oi54.tinypic.com/mx2g79.jpg
And so I cant choose any disks or partitions and so it wont let me go any further. How do I create one? I'm currently running on desktop sessions and they take forever to load up and I cant watch videos or anything because there is no flash. By the way please try and explain to me really simply because I am quite dopey and I wont be able to understand posh complicated computer words.

I just bought a USB hard disk and when I plug it in it gets mounted as owner root and group root. I tried writing a udev rule for it based on the following guide:Nothing seems to work, it always mounts as root. Slackware 13.1, KDE, Dell Optiplex GX280, Western Digital Passport USB 320 gig drive.I am a member of the plugdev group, so it seems to me a rule should not even be necessary.

60 gigabyte SSDs are down around US$100.
It seems like the optimal use would be as a cache for the regular hard drives in my computer. Eliminating the need for a fast hard drive, so I can just use a slow 2TB (~US$100) drive with a SSD cache.
Is there a good way to do this yet?
It seems like it would be nice to be able to exclude some files from caching, for things like bittorrent.

I have an hp laptop with 2 hdd slots, both are sata. it came with a 320gb hdd with vista ultimate 64. i added another 320gb hard drive to my laptop and installed kubuntu on the second hard drive. Since vista was my primary hard drive, parts of grub were installed on it i.e. stage 1.5. And the rest was installed on the kubuntu hard drive. Because of that neither os would boot independently of one another.
I eventually got tired of kubuntu and in wanted to uninstall it. I formatted that disk. Now vista gave me grub errors, like I knew it would.I was going to fix the vista boot sector and mbr by running bootrec.exe off of the vista disc. But since I have an hp laptop, hp doesnt provide a recovery disc with just vista, it is an install of the factory image of the os plus software and therefore doesnt have the utilities I need to fix my problem.I ended up navigating to some sort of command line in the windows recovery environment and tried running it there, but no luck.
I tried navigating in the hp recovery environment, and accidently had vista start to reinstall itself on the drive, and actually I did that 3-4 times, each of which I stopped the recovery early on, within 30 seconds, but it had managed to mess up my partition table. I was wondering if there is some utilities in linux/ windows that will help me restore the partitions back the way they should be? I have done a data recovery with get data back for ntfs, and was pretty successful getting some stuff back, figures since the mft was screwed up.
So first of all I want to make an exact clone of the hard drive. Something like dd but just make an image file for now. Since there are no partitions on the drive I dont think I can use partimage, or drive image xml and I wonder if clonezilla will work. And I dont know how to test it without have to reload the image and wiping the drive in the process. I have imaged the drive with get data back but it does me no good cause I cannot restore that image back to the drive, or at least dont think I can.
Second I would like to see if I can recover the partition table , or mft that was over written. Here is a list of programs I can use for imaging or recovering. [URL]Third, since I have 2 320gb hard drives, one that is corrupted, and one that I took kubuntu off of and loaded vista with the recovery disks. Can I take the mbr, and partition table, or boot sector off of the working vista and move it to the broken 320 and fix it that way?

I can see from /var/log/messages error messages and weird crashes that the disk in my laptop is on the way out. I plan to replace it but to do this I'd rather not have to install everything again. My laptop has these partitions:Windows Recovery (10GB)Windows 7 (NTFS 96.6GB)Linux /boot (ext4 100MB)Linux LVM (encrypted, 143GB)I need software that will allow me to create an image (or images) of all these partitions, save the image(s) to a USB hard drive and restore from those images once I've put the new, blank, hard drive into the laptop. Does anyone know of software (either open source or commercial pay-ware) or a technique to do this?

I have a laptop with a 320GB disk. Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 It has 8 partitions: [From Testdisk]
[code]....
Long story short, after reinstalling windows 7 and messing around a little with its partition and the other ntfs one (resizing etc); Gparted won't open the disk. It shows all the disk as unallocated space, And throws a message to the terminal which says something like "Can't have a partition out of the disk." Funny thing is that *almost* everything is working fine. Everything works except that ubuntu can't use the swap. (Dmesg says: "Swap area shorter than signature indicates") Also, testdisk, if i run a deep search for partitions, finds the last partition twice, but the second time the partition goes from 37129 0 1 to 40240 254 63 , while the disk ends at 38913 255 63. The problem is that I can't use Gparted now and I want to resize a partition. Also I believe that going without swap is not good for ubuntu.

I wanted to shrink my windows partition and enlarge ubuntu's partition,I shrunk windows ok,but Gparted wont let me enlarge the Linux partition to the left side, toward the unallocated space....Gparted will allow me to expand my windows partition back,I even tried creating a new partition and formatted it to ext4,and then deleting the partition.no go,I read somewhere that Gparted may not allow you to move the front side of the Linux partition,.

i know the basic way to resize a partition, just select it and choose resize but in my case i am trying to resize an ntfs partition but it won't let me and theres a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside of it (i'm guessing it has something to do with why i can't resize the partiton i am planning on dual-booting between windows and a linux distro i tried to do it on 2 kinds of os, windows xp pro, and windows vista. it works top notch in windows 7 but most people use xp still and it won't let me resize the partition i need to know how do get it to resize.

I threw F12 KDE on my spare rig and wanted to throw Ubuntu on it as dual boot so I can play around with different things in each flavor. I installed F12 across the entire drive and later decided I wanted to try Ubuntu with it dual boot. I booted to Ubuntu's LiveCD and fired up GParted - but GParted can't resize the partition. It just gives me a 200mb EXT4 partition and "lvm2".

I'm Dual Booting Ubuntu and Vista and i downloaded gparted today because i wanted to resize my operating systems so that Ubuntu had the majority of the hard drive. I was able to resize the vista part so that it was smaller, however i can't figure out how to resize the ubuntu half so that it takes up the unallocated part. I am currently in the process of changing over completely to ubuntu but i dont want to get rid of vista completely just yet.

I just installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was recommended to create separate partitions for root, home and swap. I was told that 15GB would be enough for a root partition but I am actually running out of that space very quickly after installing a few programs.
I wanted to resize it so I loaded up my live cd with Gparted and It won't let me resize it by more than 1MB. I also have at least 30GB of unallocated space on my hard drive so I don't know why I can't use it.
Here's some screenshots of GParted:
