Fedora :: Finding A Free X Display Number?

how to find a free X display number?
I am using Xephyr to create a windowed session for logging in as another user. It needs its own X display, though. Obviously I can just give it :1.0 and hope for the best, that it would be better to identify the first free display and use that.
But I don't know how...

Ever since upgrading to Fedora 14, my system has been almost unusable. I can only have a few windows of anything open before I start getting messages about:
Maximum number of clients reachedMaximum number of clients reachedMaximum number of clients reachedMaximum number of clients reachedxwininfo: unable to open display ':0.0'
I am unable to open any new windows then and lots of programs crash.
When things are still running correctly.

We have a program that catalogs to 40 different mount points. The program is fine as long as thier is free space on at least one of the 40 mount points. My boss wants me to come up with a script that will email us daily to know how much overall free space is left. I know I can do a df but I don't know how to combine the 40 mount points into a single disk used/disk free report.
The 40 mount points are /dev/mapper/areaxx, xx being 01 to 40.

I deleted files on my linux drive that I shouldn't have. What is a good tool to use to recover these files that will:
Recover the various file types (txt, php etc)
Recover it as the original files names
TestDisk and PhotoRec almost do the trick, but the original filenames are not restored.

I tried to come up with a thread title that was specific without being too long or cryptic. Don't think I succeeded. In my PHP error log I keep getting this error over and over again:
Code:
EntityRef: expecting ';' at line 565, column 81
It's very odd to me that it doesn't contain any sort of stack trace or file info. I know which of my virtual hosts and therefore which directory it's coming from, and it's happened now on half a dozen different servers that this site has lived on. So obviously I'm trying to track it down and add the missing ';' to the right file. This directory has dozens of sub-directories and hundreds of files though.
This is the best I've managed to come up with so far:
Code:
find . -type f -iname "*.php" -print -exec awk 'NR==565' {} ;
(I've run it both with and without the -iname filter.)
I get a very large list of files, and some of them display the contents of line 565 after them. I've checked through a number of them there, but haven't found the culprit. Is it possible to limit my "find" command to only files that have at least 565 lines? Is it possible to have it only print matches from line 565 that has at least 81 columns? How would I modify that to print perhaps 5 lines on either side (in case the error reporting is pulling a slightly different line.)

I have several CDs of diagnostic and recovery software (most of which are dated) but never seem to have them around when i could use them the most. Then it hit me: use a flash drive. i usually carry two flash drives around with me, so i loaded one 4GB with diagnostic/repair tools from PortableApps. So far I have CCleaner, John the Ripper, Recuva, an antivirus, and SIW (System Info. for Windows). I still have plenty of space left and was wondering what you all's favorites were, or what i might add. I'm looking to have somewhat of a suite, something for any occasion (within reason, of course.)I think everything right now i have is PC-based. i just want a suite of tools in case anyone has a non-hardware issue.

I am a noob and I am trying to display a count of the number of subdirectories in a directory. I have been able to use find -type d to list directories and subdirs but I want a numerical value of dirs and subdirs. I know ls -l gives a count but when I try ls -l -d all it shows is "." I also have tried a combination with the -R option but nothing seems to be working for me.Please forgive my ignorance but I am working on a script for class and this is the first step.

I want to have a Linux server "control" a number of Windows workstations. The workstations are a mixture of XP Pro, 7 Pro, and 7 Home Premium (the latter won't join a domain so can't have all the features I want mind). I want:
Centralised username and password database. Easy to add users. Roaming user profiles, so users can switch computers and take their settings with them. If possible, settings for selected programs shared between XP and 7. (They need separate profiles.) My Documents on a network file server. I'm interested in having transparent versioning on this - perhaps by using a copy-on-write filesystem, perhaps just by using a version control app on the server and having cron make a commit every night.
Able to manage software installation and removal centrally. (This I already do, using WPKG). Able to manage configuration centrally. Basically pretty much anything the user could change, I want to be able to force a setting of. I'm thinking desktop wallpaper locking, forcing use of a web proxy, setting printers, restricting use of USB drives, etc. Printer accounting.
Give the clients resolvable names (probably DNS, maybe WINS). This is mainly to help if I need to remote into a client desktop. I don't know to what extent this can be done with Samba. I know it doesn't have all the features of Windows servers, but I know next to nothing about Windows servers. So, can what I want be done? How I'm prepared to read docs for and test things out, but I don't want to be looking for tutorials on something not possible!

On Solaris UNIX, pressing Ctrl-g displays the line number for the cursor position.
i.e. line 1 0f n* --0%--
But, on suse Ctrl-g on displays the percentage only, not the hard line number
i.e. n* lines --8%--
Anyway I can make vi display hard line just like Solaris?

I tried ubuntu for a few weeks, but I couldn't get the nvidia drivers to work, I tried everything. So, I got sick of that, and went to download OpenSuse, which seems to be even nicer (..... ) I downloaded the 11.1 liveCD (gnome) from here. I nicley got the welcome screen, and the option screen (liveCD, check errors etc.). I chose LiveCD and it started booting, I got the splash screen with the loading bar, and after it completely loaded, the screen turns black with a lot of messages and at the end:
Code:
GdmLocalDisplayFactory: Maximum number of X display failures reached: Check X server log for errors.
Great, I hoped for better luck after Ubuntu..
My sys. specs:
Asus F3Sc 32bit
Intel CentrinoDuo

Is there a Linux program I can use to display random words from a list? By entering words in a spreadsheet and then sorting the list in alphabetical order, I made a list of new vocabulary words for myself to memorize, and wondered whether I could make random words from the list display on the screen daily. I know I could write a program to do that if I knew programming, but I don't.
