OpenSUSE :: Unable To Start IDLE
Nov 11, 2010
Hello, I recently installed python-idle in order to have an IDE for python. However, I cannot find it anywhere in the menu, and also through the terminal it is not recognized. Does anyone know what I have to do?

I am unable to connect to my printer wirelessly. I get this: Idle - "Connecting to printer..." The computer never connects. I can print a configuration report and get the ip address. If I type that in a webrowser, I get an error: unable to connect. Even if I plug the printer into the computer by a usb, I am unable to access the printer's ip address in the webrowser. I'm not sure how to proceed on getting the printer working wirelessly. It is a hp 6940 I use the HP Deskjet 6940 Series hpijs, 3.10.2rc1.9 driver. I have only recently been having printer problems. The printer has been hooked up on the same network for years. It still prints via usb.

My recent setup was 32-bits Ubuntu 9.10 with / on a 20 gb partition and /home on a different partition on the same physical hard drive. Two days ago the system suddenly froze while idle. I rebooted and got the error message at start up that the system was unable to mount every unit that was listed in fstab. I troubleshooted by using a Live CD but could not find any reason to why i could not find the home partition. It lists in gparted but not in terminal using df.
I've made another install on a different physical hard drive and don't care about the previous installs, but I would like to get the data out of the home partition. If anybody have any idea what to try to access it

When I run top d 0.5 on my machine and I press 1 to enable the SMP View, I notice that all of the CPUs keep toggling between 100%idle and 0% idle.
The odd part is that when a CPU goes to 0.0% idle, I would expect to see one or more of the other columns peek, but they are not.
What is causing this?

I can frequently hear a short clicking sound emanating from my hard disk. This only seems to happen whilst it is idle. (I don't get this sound when booting to windows vista).

As i understand, after autofs unmounts disk (network or otherwise) it keeps spinning. It costs energy, so i wonder is there any way to put hard disk to idle state after autofs timeout kicks in?

I created a thread about a problem a I had with my hard disk clicking whilst idle little while ago and I may now have stumbled upon a possible solution. The strange thing with the problem is that Ubuntu/Kubuntu didn't cause this problem but Opensuse 11.2 does.
I installed Fedora 13 to have a glimpse of what all the fuss was about and noticed that I had the same problem (hard disk clicking whilst idle ~ every 20 secs or so). Now there's a wiki on this subject and a few bug reports: [url]
Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom
The report suggests looking at: Disk Power Management - openSUSE which lists a method to create a configuration file to management disk power management:
My question is whether I could download the storage-fixup rpm [url] has a description of it and it can be found: Software.openSUSE.org) and install it to (hopefully) solve the issue or should I follow the method given in: Disk Power Management - openSUSE
to set APM to 254:
Code:

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:
[code]...
When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

Today I decided to install XDM instead of GDM. During installation I was asked which display system should Ubuntu use. I chose GDM - that was my mistake. Then I ran "dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and chose XDM. After restart my system was unable to load - progress bar was running and running and running. I pressed ctrl-alt-backspace and saw "starting x-display-manager". That's all, after that nothing happened. After that I renamed /etc/init/gdm.conf to gdm.conf.DISABLED and tried to load Ubuntu. It started with some big, old-stylish login screen and after that GDM was loaded again. "sudo xdm" seems to be working as nothing appears after that command.

I am having trouble starting SKIM in KUbuntu 10.10 and thus unable to type Chiense characters.
I have followed the instructions listed here [url]
But when I try to start SKIM through K Menu -> Utilities -> SKIM, it fails. I have no idea how to proceed from here.
I've also read this thread [url] and I'm stuck again at the part 'start SKIM'.
I can start SCIM (K Menu -> Settings -> SCIM), but it doesn't seem to have any effect when I invoke the trigger.
And so does the iBus Keyboard Input Methods application (K Menu -> Settings -> Key Board Input Methods) that I am able to start but have no effect too.
Under Settings, there is also another application called Input Method Switcher (K Menu -> Settings -> Input Method Switcher) which fail to start too.
So what can I do to be able to type in Chinese under KUbuntu? I remember setting it up in Ubuntu 9.04 is really easy.

cupsd has ceased starting at boot time. It is checked off in System->Administration->BootUp Manager, and it runs fine from the command line. But not at boot. This is not the problem reported here.I suspect there are a couple more processes that have stopped running, but their absence hasn't been obvious yet.FWIW, I'm running 10.04 with the 2.6.35-22 kernel.

When I boot up, right before the login screen appears, everything freezes, and I have no choice but to turn the computer off manually.
The first time it happened, I had just downloaded a HUGE update (hadn't been online with ubuntu in a long time), and the computer was probably installing the updates when it crashed, and then, the problem I described above.
I tried to boot up in recovery mode, but at some point the computer couldn't come further. I don't think it crashed, I think it was working, but nothing happened. At the time it got stuck the last command line read: [ 7.451509] udev[514]: starting version 163
In addition to ubuntu, I also run windows 7 on the computer.
