OpenSUSE :: Kalarm: Only The First Audio Alarm Works Normally

Mar 3, 2011

Since the last kde update I have observed that when an audio alarm is triggered everything is normal: you see the window with the message and hear the sound. But from that moment on the alarms show the window, but no sound is heard. If I quit the application and start it again, the same happens: first alarm works normally, the others are mute. I removed the config files and started again, but this resolved nothing.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Audio Works - But Not MP3 Or CDA

Feb 21, 2010

I have OpenSuSE 11.2 installed on an Athlon 1.1GHz with 768 MB RAM and 240 GB HDD Space. I have a Radeon 9250 Video card and a AOpen DVD/CD ROM drive. My sound card is an old SB Live that works great. The audio that plays is crisp and clear. My problem is that I cannot get it to play MP3's or Music CD's. I have tried looking through Yast to see if there were libraries I needed, but being new to Linux I was tentative to install something that might crash my system.

One thing I can tell you is that when I open an MP3 file in xfmedia or Kaffeine the file appears to open, but is played in a split second with no audio output to the speakers. When I try to play a CD in Kaffeine, I get this error: Cannot find input plugin for MRL [cdda:/].

I am loving this system. I have the KDE desktop installed and it works very nice.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Alsa Based Software Multi-band Graphic Audio Frequency Equalizer That Works With 11.x?

May 15, 2010

Does anyone know of an alsa based software multi-band (10 or more) graphic audio frequency equalizer that works with Suse 11.x? To be clear, I don't mean an equalizer within an audio or video player. One that can be used with any sound application, that works between the output of the player and the output plugs on a motherboard or sound card.

Debian :: App Similar To Kalarm For Gnome?

Jul 10, 2011

Trying to get time and date based notifications to appear on my screen. When I was running kde, kalarm worked great for this. Now I'm running gnome. Tried osmo but the dialog for setting up recurring events represents a tale told by an idiot.

Tried running a batch script via cron and dialog. The script runs but the dialog message doesn't appear on my screen.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Distribution Where Audio Just Works?

Jul 20, 2010

Is there a Ubuntu distribution in which sound "just works"? I'm booting into Windows 7 far too much.I am running both Jaunty (on an old P4V533-MX desktop) where for some reason my sound went away, and Lucid, on a new Dell laptop (all-Intel Studio 14). I thought a new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on modern hardware would give me rhythmbox back, but I get no sound of any kind from the Dell laptop after installation, although everything works Ok if I boot into a W7 (came with the purchase) partition.

I don't want to fiddle with configuration files any more - just wondering if there is a "most-dependable" Ubuntu with respect to audio. Which I will install. Frustrated and impatient after weeks of this.I am an old (hairy eared) Unix fan but IMO if Linux continues to complicate itself so freely (i.e. Pulseaudio - I don't know an audio mixer from a can opener and would prefer to remain that way), then the small market share it has will slip away rather than grow.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Why Isn't There A GUI Audio Ripper That Just Works

Nov 10, 2010

All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.

RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio Device Only Works After Hibernate / Sort It?

Jun 24, 2010

When i turn on my computer and log in i get a notification that says "Phonon: KDE's Multimedia Library -- The audio playback device HDA Intel (ALC880 Analog) does not work." and the system falls back to pulse audio.

Also, i noticed that if i wake my computer from hibernation then the HDA Intel device will begin working again.

I read through the comprehensive sound guide with no luck, this behavior seems very strange to me and im not sure what is causing it. I would much rather use the HDA Intel sound device than Pulse Audio.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.1 Updates To Pulse Audio In Gnome Improve Audio Functionality ?

Oct 17, 2010

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).

I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.

Hence I am looking at Gnome.

I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.

I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:

Code:

So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?

Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Audio Choppy - Can't Play Any Audio With Amarok When Desktop Effects Are Enabled

Jun 7, 2011

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:

dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.

i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 2 Audio Cards - How To Redirect Audio Streams

Feb 7, 2010

on my PC I have 2 sound drivers, one from the mainboard (AC97) and one PCI card (ES1969). Because the mainboard sound path did not recording, I installed the PCI sound card and with 11.1, I managed it to play and record all audio data. With 11.2 the PCI sound path plays the system sounds (suse start-up or shut-down sounds) but not the streaming audio data (skype, flash player). But these are played by the mainboard audio instead. The audio-tests from yast->hardware->sound work for both paths. How should I configure the system to redirect the audio streams to the desired (PCI) audio path? The PCI audio is set as primary sound card and is not muted.

Ubuntu :: Alarm Clock Program Goes Off?

Sep 24, 2010

I'm looking for an easy to use alarm clock program that I can suggest to new users. The two I have tried so far have fallen short of my expectations. "Alarm Clock" from the Ubuntu software repository starts out okay, but when the alarm actually goes off, getting it to stop seems pretty unintuitive. Click on the Alarm Clock icon, then click a Stop button in the new window that pops up. Sounds easy enough except that the icon used for "Stop" is just this grey square, so for users who are not familiar with linux or this program, it isn't even obvious that it is a button. I had one user actually uninstall the thing in order to get it to shut up. Preferably one should be able to silence the alarm by click on the alarm icon (or right clicking, if a 'doze' behavior is preferred) The other one I tried was alarm-clock-applet, which wants me to locate an alarm sound on my filesystem. Uh, no.

Does anyone know of a simple, basic alarm clock system that anyone can just sit down and immediately use without having to 'get in to the head' of the developer? Are the KDE alarms better? Am I missing something about either of these programs which would make them easier to use?

General :: Writing A Script For An Alarm Clock?

Nov 27, 2010

I left the linux world for a few years and now i am trying to re-learn my shell scripting basics. I am writing a script for an alarm clock, but i seem to be running into a few issues.

declare -i H
declare -i M
declare -i currentH
declare -i currentM
declare -i minutesLeft

[code]....

My script, instead of doing what it should, produces the following errors:

./alarm: line 19: echo 11: No such file or directory
./alarm: line 26: 6: command not found

[code]....

and if i choose the time 11:06, files called 11 and 6 are creating in the working directory. I am sure it is something really simple, but i haven't used linux or scripting on my computers in around 6 years.
