Using a terminal shell and entering ls -l, all the files in the user /home/user1 appear with a green block background. The files in /home/user2 have standard Linux colors. What does the green block mean?
View 1 RepliesI can configure my software's appearance? Well, for the KDM theme, the Grub Bootsplash, i can download themes people so generously create. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy wallpaper, regardless of what is chosen, flashes to blue/green (like an old Win95 desktop color) every 10-15 seconds. It stays that way for a second, then goes back to what is set. Also, it seems to 'fade in' to the blue/green, then fades back to the chosen wallpaper (albeit a very fast fade). Icons on the desktop are unaffected.I've tried disabling all desktop effects, and it still does it. The only way to stop it is to reboot, which seems to fix the problem for 24 hours or so, then it starts again.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

View 1 Replies View Relatedi just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 the netbook distro. at the desktop view there is a list of about 10 buttons/menus listed on the left hand side, is there anyway to control what buttons/menus are listed and which icons are listed under each of them? having a netbook i would like to remove and unclutter the desktop view as much as possible but i dont want to remove those apps i still want to be able to open those apps if i want to even if by removing those icons and menus/buttons makes it a pain.

Now, I found a lovely program called "fdupes" and was able to build a list of all the duplicate files, and I'm trying to use "xargs" to remove then. However, when I try and run the command "xargs -0 --arg-file="dupes.txt" rm" or "xargs -0 rm < "dupes.txt"" it give me the following error: "xargs: argument line too long".
how perhaps a different way of accomplishing the same thing?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use Apache 2.0.55 (Ubuntu) as a document server for a business association. When the document files expire, I change the permissions so that only the owner can open them but I like to leave them on the server so that they are all in one place.
Here is my trouble--when visitors come to the site and get the directory listing, all the document files show up, whether the visitor can access them or not.
Is there some way to configure the server to not show the inaccessible files?
I guess a few technical details might help. During their useful lives, the files permissions are set to 644. Once they expire, I change them to 600. After the change, the files are still visible. Setting them to 000 doesn't help either.
It might be of note, but directories behave differently than files. If I set a directory to 600, it disappears from the listing.
I've got a text file with a list of .gz files, these .gz files are in various sub directories of one parent directory and I've hacked this little script together to copy them from their current location to a new one and spit out any it can't find to "/home/user/not_found" but for the life of me can't get it to run properly!

In order to upgrade a machine that can not successfully upgrade to 10.4 I downloaded and burned the 10.04.1 iso image off the ubuntu alternate download site. In my first attempt I unsuccessfully burned the image with it failing at the very end. I did perform an md5sum on it and received the precise output I got from my second burn attenpt which DID complete successfully. Here is the output:

Is there something wrong with this image on the website or is the error about 1 file being unreadable (could that also mean missing?) be erroneous?
My machine will not shutdown - It goes through the motions, it closes everything the green suse screen appears and the progress bar goes to the end. Then it flashes the keyboard lights and spins the disk down and then stops with the green splash screen - I have to press the power button to turn off.

I have an NVidia SE6150 Graphic Card and i have tried to configure the startup parameter vga=0x317, i have changed this to vga=0 to get vesa mode but that doesn't work, i have an wide screen monitor that supports 24 bit and 1360x768.
Iam tring to install 11.4 on my new computer, when i start the computer the green screen pops up and syslinux starts. However when it finishes loading a dialog box pops up saying "Make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive" . Obviously it it is,

OpenSUSE seems to have an issue picking up and working with my newer webcam. This webcam does work with linux, it works with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and Linux Mint 9 Isadora but openSUSE 11.3 doesnt seem to like it. Information about webcam drivers seems to be missing now, I tried the drivers repo but no luck. Cheese freezes and WXcam comes up with a green screen with no video. This is a gateway product by my understanding but it seems to be linux compatible, especially with the Linux 2.6.34 kernel that both Ubuntu and openSUSE use right now. But for some reason its not quite clicking with openSUSE 11.3
View 1 Replies View Relatedeverytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

I have been using Suse Linux for years and I must ask some basic questions about repositories which may be elementary to many. Recently I was redirected to a repository with over 30 rpms and I figured it is time to ask the questions. Is it implied that when you go to a repository that one has to select and install all the listed rpm's?
If so, which order do you use? Is there some tool to load all at once instead of individually? If not, is there an intelligent way to select the ones you need or does one simply use "trial and error" approach? Can you skip development rpms?
Is there a particular app listed as apparmor, or is it a series of separate programs that act as a whole? if the latter, which programs are these. i just got really lucky with my installation of 11.2, and I'm trying to confirm my success.
