Ubuntu Servers :: Controlling Files Listed By Directory Request

May 5, 2011

I use Apache 2.0.55 (Ubuntu) as a document server for a business association. When the document files expire, I change the permissions so that only the owner can open them but I like to leave them on the server so that they are all in one place.

Here is my trouble--when visitors come to the site and get the directory listing, all the document files show up, whether the visitor can access them or not.

Is there some way to configure the server to not show the inaccessible files?

I guess a few technical details might help. During their useful lives, the files permissions are set to 644. Once they expire, I change them to 600. After the change, the files are still visible. Setting them to 000 doesn't help either.

It might be of note, but directories behave differently than files. If I set a directory to 600, it disappears from the listing.

Ubuntu Servers :: Controlling A Socks Proxy?

Feb 27, 2011

I have my desktop set up as a SOCKS proxy, and not only me uses it, some friends do too. What I would like to know is how to check every now and again what they are using it for... for example the agreement we have is that they only use it to watch BBC iplayer and 4OD etc while they are abroad. What I dont want is them to pointlessly use it for other browsing.I trust my friends wont, but is there also a way of checking they arent using my connection to download illegal torrents?I guess best case scenrio would be to be able to whitelist only a few sites per user request. Is this possible?

Ubuntu :: 9.1 - MySQL Listed As Group / Owner In Directory

Mar 23, 2010

I use 9.10 desktop with a root user and my own user (timmo), I did not create anything else. Now I check a directory (mysql databases) with ls -l and I see mysql not only as a group but also as owner. How can mysql, not being a user on my system, be an owner? In users and groups I see that all of the many groups only have two members, root and timmo. I know that mysql users and linux users are different animals but ls -l is definitely a linux command.

Ubuntu Servers :: What Software Can Use So Can FTP My Site's Files To / Var / Www Directory?

May 31, 2011

Does anyone have any recommendations on what software I can use so I can FTP my site's files to the /var/www directory? I tried using vsftpd, but the software was terribly difficult to configure correctly. I tried telling it to make everything that was uploaded have "704" permissions, but everything I uploaded had strange permissions on them. When I used to use professional Linux hosting, that was never a problem, so I'd like a simple FTP server software so I can easily manage my site from a remote location.

EDIT: I changed the permissions of the "folder" folder itself, I can access everything in that directory now but not any other folders in it. Do I really need to go through every folder every time and change the permissions?

Ubuntu Servers :: Browser Tries To Download PHP Files In User Directory?

Mar 29, 2011

I was having trouble getting php files to display properly on my ubuntu 10.10 LAMP setup. Everything was installed with defaults and working properly. testphp.php worked as long as it was in the sites parent directory, but any php files in user directories did not work. All browsers tried to download the php files located in /home/user/public_html instead. I tried to use the help documents here, [URL]..

Finally I was browsing around in the /etc/apache2/mods-available directory and looked at the php5.conf file. Here is the relevant information from the file:

Code:

# To re-enable php in user directories comment the following lines
# (from <IfModule ...> to </IfModule>.) Do NOT set it to On as it
# prevents .htaccess files from disabling it.
# <IfModule mod_userdir.c> #Comment out this line

[Code]...

I tried to edit the help document linked above but it says not to do so! I couldn't find a reference for this fix anywhere else, so I decided to post it here.

Fedora Servers :: Can't Access Or Modify File Unless Directory Mode Is 777 And Files Are 666

Nov 8, 2010

I have a multi user system for my roommates and myself that has separate folders for each of us. I've got user authentication working with samba, but unless I set every file and folder readable/writeable by all users, I can't browse it or edit the files. This isn't ideal as the shares are open to other users access, so I'm hoping there's a way to keep folders at 750 and files at 660 while allowing samba users to browse, delete and edit. Also, the samba share is actually a mounted NFS share from another server. Both the NFS server and the Samba server have the same users/uid's. When a file is created from a Windows host via the Samba client, the NFS server's permissions do show that the correct user owns the files, but since the files aren't mode 666 but 640 I can't edit or delete the file.

Ubuntu :: Delete All Files Listed In A Text File?

May 26, 2010

Through various Windows reinstalls and switches within Linux distros, I have a massive amount of duplication within my music archive (on the order of 7+ dupes of each file). Now, I found a lovely program called "fdupes" and was able to build a list of all the duplicate files, and I'm trying to use "xargs" to remove then. However, when I try and run the command "xargs -0 --arg-file="dupes.txt" rm" or "xargs -0 rm < "dupes.txt"" it give me the following error: "xargs: argument line too long".

how perhaps a different way of accomplishing the same thing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Md5sum: WARNING: 1 Of 62 Listed Files Couldn't Be Read

Oct 17, 2010

In order to upgrade a machine that can not successfully upgrade to 10.4 I downloaded and burned the 10.04.1 iso image off the ubuntu alternate download site. In my first attempt I unsuccessfully burned the image with it failing at the very end. I did perform an md5sum on it and received the precise output I got from my second burn attenpt which DID complete successfully. Here is the output:

[code]...

I did research this last night and it seems the common wisdom was to reburn the iso (which I did twice) or copy down the iso again. This I also did and it came down precisely, bit for bit, the same as the first one. Here are the two cksums

[code]...

Is there something wrong with this image on the website or is the error about 1 file being unreadable (could that also mean missing?) be erroneous?

Debian Configuration :: Network - Access Servers Request Failed

Feb 1, 2010

I recently installed two PC with debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26). One is called serveur-debian1 and the second one serveur-debian2. I have installed gnome, samba, mysql5, apache2, php5, and Virtualbox,bridge-tools on them. On serveur-debian2, i installed an other virtual debian lenny with apache2,mysql5,php5,nagios and centreon on it to view my network. I remember having installed a soft to access nntp on serveur-debian2 in order to test nagios.

Since a few days, i have problem to access to my servers. rom my windows 7 client, i try to ping serveur-debian1. Response is OK but not for all resquets Always from the same computer, i try to ping serveur-debian2. Response is OK but not for all again.

When i launch a ping on serveur-debian1 and serveur debian2 at the same time i have:

ping 1 to 10: serveur-debian1: response OK
serveur-debian2: no response
ping 11to 14: serveur-debian1: no response
serveur-debian2: response OK
ping 15 to 25: serveur-debian1: respone OK
serveur-debian2: @ip serveur-debian1 network unreachable (there's no error, it shows me the ip of serveur-debian1)

If i switch on the debian virtual server on the serveur-debian2, and i ping it at the same time, the response is OK for all resquests. The problem is very strange. I can't have a correct connection and when i launch a request from a software which access the mysql server, the requests failed ...
