Debian :: Create A Shortcut In The "start" Menu To The Executable?
Mar 21, 2011
try to keep file system organized on XP instead of C:program files*everything goes blindly here I use C:MEDIA*category*application_name.So where in Debian on the hard drive are programs actually installed to? There's a couple programs that the sites merely gave me zip files instead of installers that were also not like in the package manager so I'd like to know where to extract those files. Also how do I create a shortcut in the "start" menu to the executable?
I installed the software "Stellarium" from a installer I downloaded, but no shortcut was added to the menu. How can I create one? My desktop environment is LXDE.
newbie here..loving suse...but a question on package management...I have to run the etracer command in a shell to launch the program "extreme tux racer" for my son. it does not show up in a menu anywhere.how do i create a shortcut either on desktop or in the game menu?
How can i make shortcut on desktop from Applications menu? If i right click an application from Applications menu, the application launches, Can't make shortcut.
I have just installed a program called IDA-STEP on my Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS system.
It was a manual download from website and I unzipped the program folder to /usr/local/ida-step, and ran the executable to install (./ida-step) it.
Now, every time I want to run the program I have to type "sudo ./ida-step" from within the folder to begin the program as there is no shortcut under Applications (Gnome desktop).
Is there a way to get a shortcut to the program under Applications?
I am fairly new to Linux, and in the last two days, I've learned a lot! I am a LONG time heavy windows user since 1986, and have used Mac OS X at work for the last year. I feel I am a more experienced user on the Windows platform; I have programmed a short game in BASIC and C++. I have tons of games and one of my hopes is to get them working on Linux.
My problem; I have sucessfully downloaded a couple games, compiled their scipts and can play them by finding their executable and double clicking on them. i have added them to my Games menu. I downloaded a front-end for a game that is written in Python (Doomsday and Snowberry if you want to know) and have it running great! However, I would like to create some kind of clickable link in my Games menu so that it'll start up Snowberry (snowberry.py) so I don't have to keep opening a terminal and 'cd' my way to it's folder and 'python file.py'. Possible? I keep searching on google and find nothing but references to creating executable files for Windows.
I am using GTK and C and on my application I have a Drag and drop feature.
Code: Select allicon_view = gtk_icon_view_new_with_model(create_and_fill_model(pALP)); g_object_unref(pALP->list_store); /* destroy model automatically with view */ gtk_icon_view_set_selection_mode(GTK_ICON_VIEW(icon_view), GTK_SELECTION_SINGLE); gtk_icon_view_set_reorderable(GTK_ICON_VIEW(icon_view), TRUE); gtk_icon_view_set_text_column(GTK_ICON_VIEW(icon_view), COL_DISPLAY_NAME);
[Code] ....
The drag and drop works fine but when I exit the application and enter again, the changes of the drops are not saved, meaning the new location is not saved. I understand that in order to save the location of the drops I need to create a menu file and write some xml, But how do I do this? it there another way?
I use a P2P application (KMLDonkey), whose client (mlnet) can be either started automatically, at startup, or manually, after login. At installation, when prompted, I chose the former so as to minimise the number of clicks. However, with time I found it inconvenient because, of course, it would start downloading even though I haven't started its GUI yet or don't plan to use it at all.
What I would like is to click on 1 entry in the menu and have the client and, in sequence, the GUI start when I decide to use the application. Perhaps this would require a short script in /usr/local/bin? I've tried to write one, but failed miserably, as I'm not good at it. I use KDE, but the application or the desktop manager themselves are not important here, for the solution would apply to any application with a separate client/GUI.
My Linux release version is fedora14,and windows manager is Gnome.I want to add an item that "send to the portable disk" in the shortcut menu when I click the right button on a file. What should I do?
For many years, I was happily running VMware virtual windows machine (XP, now Win7) on my linux host. Using the VMware unity mode I had the perfect, seamless integration of windows applications on my favourite linux desktop. However, VMware has dropped unity support for Linux hosts in their latest release 12. So I need a new method to get my seamless integration.
I have set up some launchers for the most commonly used windows applications to run them as RemoteApp via xfreerdp directly from my dock. That seems to work OK. Now sometimes I have to access some other program or maybe the control panels or something like that. For this purpose it would be very useful to be able to launch the (or any 3rd party) "start menu" as remote up and from there launch whatever is needed. So far I did not find anything that looked like a StartMenu.exe I could use
How I could access the start menu via RemoteApp.
VMware Unity was way cool. I tried Seamless Mode in VBox, but that doesn't cut it for me ....
Create the following directories: parent/child Navigate to child and create a file named child (this is an executable file in my case, not sure if that makes a difference). I need to create two "link to executable" links in the parent.
I had assumed that this would work: ln -sf ./child ../child1 ln -sf ./child ../child2
But that creates a "link to folder" (./child) in the parent directory. If I change it to: ln -sf -t.. ./child child1 ln -sf -t.. ./child child2 I get an error, "ln: '../child': cannot overwrite directory".
If I do it from the parent directory (which I cannot do, this is part of a Makefile recipe): ln -sf ./child/child ./child1 ln -sf ./child/child ./child2
It works. Note that I cannot alter the names of any directories or files. How do I create the links when the current directory is the child?
Our application is based on the C++ devlopment which requires so many of packages dependent on the Ubuntu OS, Graphics libraries, Development packages and other dependent libraries. So we need to configure all those every time in a new PC when we add. Is there any other way to do this job very easily and the any method to create our application executable to run in all PCs with the dependencies packages installed.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows the command to access the menu bar, as in the file edit view bar, not the applications places system one. I'm trying to create a keyboard shortcut to access the menu bar and I need to know the command for this.

I've added Warsow.i386 (0.5) to my Applications > Games menu as a shortcut, but whenever I try to run it, my screen goes black for a second and then returns to desktop. Running the same file from its folder in /home runs the game fine.Is this common problem with shortcuts or is it just me and the game?
I want to create a shortcut to run a program called RoomEqWizard but the only way I know how to run the program is to open a terminal and type the location to where the program is and call the program file. I already tried creating a shortcut on the main menu but I get a "error creating the child process for this terminal" message every time...
I'm using two OS in parallel, and all of my data are stored in partition D. I want to create a shorcut to a specific folder inside it, e.x: D:/path/to/folder and put it in the Ubuntu Desktop (~/Desktop).

After upgrading Opera browser, by old shortcut for it became invalid. The new was added but the old one stayed and is invalid. I can not remove it through normal means as it doesn't appear in the menu editing window but it's there in the menu. Is there any way to manually remove items from the menu? Or to rebuild the entire menu?
I'd like to create a launcher for ParaView that requires a terminal shell in order to launch. It is just a pain having to enter the couple of lines to launch it from Konsole.
cd /home/user/Document/ParaView(version)/bin ./paraview
Lemme know what you think. I'd just like to add something to the quick launch panel.
I downloaded AVG Free Edition as protection after I accidentally visited a drive-by-download site (which was most likely trying to download a windows virus, I don't quite know what the file extension was on the file it tried to make me download 'cause I got out of that trap faster than a bat out of He...Well you get the picture), and it does not seem that the .deb package directly from the AVG Free Linux download page fully installs. Synaptic acknowledges the package's existence, yet there are no shortcuts on the Desktop or on the system menu. I followed the link to AVG from this Ubuntu. So, perhaps, someone at AVG has some explaining to do on why their free for Linux doesn't seem to work. I don't know maybe I'm overthinking my vulnerability, I'm just used to the environment of paranoia developed by using Windo$e
