OpenSUSE :: Clean Up Alacarte - Move Around Launchers In Application Browser
May 19, 2010
I like openSuSE, but the main thing I miss from Ubuntu is the ability to have complete control over the applications menu. Ubuntu had a clean menu where everything was one level deep, with pretty basic categories. But opening alacarte in openSuSE (running 11.2 with GNOME) is an absolute mess. There are categories for "Astronomy", "Kidsgames", and a whole bunch of folders that I would never use. And it's nearly impossible to get rid of them. Selecting delete almost never works; the closest I've gotten was to re-name a whole bunch of ".directory" files so that the system wouldn't find them, but it still created the majority of them, only this time with generic folders over the default icons.
Plus, I would like to be able to change which application goes to which category in the Application Browser. That menu is much more clean, but I would like to create a "Games" section for it, and move my text editors from Utility to Development. I know that most of the .desktop files are in /usr/share/applications (I have a couple in /usr/local/share), the directories are defined in /usr/share/desktop-directories and ~/.local/share/desktop-directories, and the menu itself seems to define categories in /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu. But despite knowing all of this, I still have no idea how to clean up alacarte and how to move around launchers in the Application Browser.
Ever since I first discovered alacarte (gnome menu editor) I have been creating lots of menus and submenus for gnome menu so I can always find what I want. To avoid having to redo them, whenever I try another gnome based distro or do a fresh install I always copy ~/.local/share/desktop-directories and applications (and a couple of other files, I forget right now) so I can use the same menus in those.
Well, I don't use these custom menus so much lately so have gone for a much simpler solution of creating a "Favourites" submenu and just adding apps I use a lot. It was while rummaging around .local today I noticed there are hundreds of left over files from long since deleted custom menus (like 18 months+) that I have been copying from one distro to another all this time. Why on earth doesn't alacarte delete all these deleted menus and applications files?
I just did a little experiment: I deleted everything out of these folders so I was basically left with the stock gnome menu with no customizations. I then added a new submenu and then added 3 random apps to to it. I then went and deleted two of those apps and when I went to check, sure enough ~/.local/share/applications contained the 3 files instead of one.
I am running Fedora 15 and Gnome 3, most of which I like and is working. However I can't seem to add a custom launcher or if I install a application and the .desktop file is created and placed in ~/.local/share/applications the application is not appearing in the search for that application. How do I add a custom application to the list of applications installed?
I was want to know how can one move application tabs in KDE around the taskbar, I can do this in XFCE-taskbar, but in KDE it doesn't seem to work, I just grab it and try to move right, but it doesn't move), well, does anybody know where you can setup this? Such a simple function and no, not working?
I'm running openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. I went through the Software Manager and deleted every instance of OpenOffice.org that was left after changing to LibreOffice, and also installed Beagle (+dependencies) and Tracker with some additional packages. Then I noticed that in the Application Browser there is no text next to the icons. Only the small version of the icons centered with no text (screenshot below).
The problem is I have no idea how to restore it to the way it was. I've already deleted Beagle and Tracker and their packages to no avail. I also noticed that YaST and Control Center both look fine. It's only the Application Browser.
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and this is my first experience with Unity. I have managed to create launchers in .local/share/applications and drag them to the launcher to add desired shortcuts. Here are two questions I have:
1) I am adding many shortcuts to various directories I frequently use; the shortcut's have commands like nautilus /home/user/some/dir. Despite the fact that I change their icons, when I drag them to the launcher they all use the Nautilus icon. Is there a way to fix this?
2) Is there a way to group the launchers? For example, having a group for office applications, and a group for directory launchers?
Is there a way to clean up OpenSuse's applications menu with alacarte? It takes forever for me to find an existing menu item if I want to change or delete it, but deleting existing pre-defined groups (such as "Amusement", "Art and Culture", and "Games for Kids") doesn't work. They simply won't delete.
I have a machine which is currently running IceCast (a streaming audio server), which runs on port 80. I installed Apache 2 and configured it to run on port 18080 through the httpd.conf file. Restarted httpd service. I cannot get to 10.0.0.128:18080 (this is the IP of the machine). The Icecast server webpage is still accessible. No logs are generated by apache in the logs folder. Firewall is off (iptables).
Is it possible to add a menu option to allow me to open a program as root from inside the application browser window? In windows if you hold ctrl and right click a program icon your given the option to "run as" (windows equivalent of sudo). Is there a way to get something like that in the application browser in gnome?
I am looking for a method to run a shell script or open an application through the web browser. For example, open OpenOffice from the browser (without going through the menus). Is it possible? My ultimate goal to pass an argument through the browser to a script. I know it is pretty far fetched for my very limited abilities but I wanna try. For example I want to pass an URL or a text string from the browser to a shell script
I frequently access my home computer throughout the day in two ways: either locally, or remotely using nxserver/nxclient. As one user, I have two concurrent X-windows sessions running, possibly with different applications running in each. Is it possible to move a running application from one session to the other? That is, I want all the active windows related to the app to disappear from one desktop,
For some reason when i'm working on things or while using a browser the current window gets dark (shaded) and everything freezes. The only way i can get rid of it is by turning my computer off. Why does this happen and how can i stop it from happening? It happens alot while using audio recording software.
1)I lost ability to move application window. eg, The firefox window is stuck and anchored at the upper left corner. I can still resize by dragging the lower right corner. I notice the upper right corner resize tab disappears. If open another application, it is again anchored at upper left corner and cannot be moved.
2)under Settings>Xfce Setting Manager> Window Manager, all the icons are gone. Same inside Window ManagerTweaks. I used "xfce4-panel" in terminal, it doesn't help.
Just installed a new computer with ubuntu 10.10. I assign shortkey alt+1 to move workspace left and alt+2 to move workspace right. When I move workspace the focus application move with me to the new workspace. That is kind of annoying since I usually build up my workspace with mail here, music here, surf here. After sometime with this new "feature/bug" I got application all over the place.1) How do I turn this off?2) How do I enable dragging application from one workspace to another.
All of a sudden, none of the applications are able to connect to the internet, except the web browser. I use Google Chrome and sometimes Mozilla firefox.
There is a network proxy and I did apply the network proxy setting system wide.
Applications like Dropbox, Messenger etc stopped connecting to internet which were working very well until yesterday.
I'm unable to set GNU IceCat as the default browser for my user account (it's not on the list of available applications in the GNOME thingy). Do you have any clue why?
When I try to start alacarte from the shell, I get: Traceback (most recent call last):
[Code]...
The reason I start from the shell is because I noticed that it would crash after starting up in system monitor. This problem started after I tried to remove a program from the list which had already been manually removed. When this program was unchecked, the list went completely blank. I tried to revert the list, but it didn't work. Is there any hopes of repair?
I've just recently downloaded Lubuntu 10.04 and tried it. It was nice because it was light on my machine. My only problem is, is that it doesn't have a graphical menu editor, and I don't know how to edit menus other than using GUIs.
I've read something about alacarte-menu-editor being able to be used in Lubuntu. I would just like to confirm if it DOES work with Lubuntu.
I've downloaded VideoLan (VLC) via Yast but the icon was placed in the audio folder. How do I move it to the video player folder? Also, where are additional icons stored? I run SuSE 11.2 (boxed version) with KDE.
Ive had a look around and couldn't find anything that helped so i thought id ask,i have ubuntu net-book 10.10, the menu editor isnt running properly its really hit and miss i have icons that appear even if ive unchecked them and icons that dissappear even though ive checked them and i also keep having to delete duplicate program entrys in the menu editor and its been a problem pretty much since instalationive tried running Alacart as Sudo and editing the menu in that way but i still have the same hit and miss problem with icons being there at randomim really new to Ubuntu and only know what ive recently picked up reading these types of forums so im not sure if im doing something wron
I have problem with my printer HP Deskjet D1460. My printer is configured and works. When I send a file on the print, the printer clings a sheet of paper and starts to print, but a paper as was clean so clean and remains, after printing.
I edited my menu using alacarte. There was an unchecked entry of "Panel", so I deleted that entry. After a reboot, my gnome-panel autostarts no more. I reset everythin in alacarte, but I still have to start gnome-panel manually.
How is that possible? Why depends a simple menu entry from the boot configuration? I hate this so much, because I've made 14 reinstalls the last 3 weeks because of those stupid fails. Is there anybody out there having a solution for me (except reinstalling Ubuntu.
I'm using Icecat (aka Gnuzilla a Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 ) When I select "open containing folder" it prompts "Choose an application" rather than defaulting it to the system's file management system (which in this case is Nautilus from Gnome desktop system).
Ubuntu 10.10 is the system I'm using. Does anyone know how to fix this so it will function normally?
Is there any difference between apt-get clean and aptitude clean? Do they both remove the same caches? Should I know any other commands for cleaning up wasted space on my ubuntu laptop?
I have an application named OpenFTD which lists spots on usenet. I have an NZB button that opens a webbrowser and opens a webpage where I can create the appropriate NZB. All great however, somehow, the web browser is misconfigured.
When I press the button I can debug this:
Code: Error showing url: Failed to execute child process "/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome" (No such file or directory)Which makes sense, at some point in time, I had chrome.
I tried: - to reinstall openFTD and also removed all user files. Doens't change a thing. - checked update-alternatives x-www-browser (set to opera) - reset update-alternatives x-www-browser (firefox, just to try) - checked udpate-alternatives gnome-www-browser (firefox)
Is there some other thing in Ubuntu that I can tweak/tune to get rid of "something" that is obviously linking to chrome.
Of course, I understand the reinstalling chrome gets rid of this issue, but I rather have it fixed.
If I start the software installer, I see my tmp is almost full. I tried to find cleansweep, but in vain. What can I do to clean tmp? Can all files be removed?
