Ubuntu :: Alacarte Menu Editor Compatibility?

Jul 12, 2010

I've just recently downloaded Lubuntu 10.04 and tried it. It was nice because it was light on my machine. My only problem is, is that it doesn't have a graphical menu editor, and I don't know how to edit menus other than using GUIs.

I've read something about alacarte-menu-editor being able to be used in Lubuntu. I would just like to confirm if it DOES work with Lubuntu.

OpenSUSE :: Cleaner Applications Menu With Alacarte?

Apr 21, 2010

Is there a way to clean up OpenSuse's applications menu with alacarte? It takes forever for me to find an existing menu item if I want to change or delete it, but deleting existing pre-defined groups (such as "Amusement", "Art and Culture", and "Games for Kids") doesn't work. They simply won't delete.

Debian Multimedia :: Alacarte Won't Add Folders Under "Games" Menu

Alacarte won't add folders under "Games" menu, and when I dragged an icon into one of the subfolders that was already there, that icon and the folder I was dragging it to went poof.

I really don't want to learn the freedesktop.org standards just to edit my main menu. What is wrong with this?

Ubuntu :: How To Create Commands For Menu Editor

Apr 17, 2011

Now and then i want to add a command for installed application that hasn't put an icon in the Main Menu. What is missing, that i do not know how to research, are the mysterious pieces of code following the application name in the Command line of the dialog box for making a new Menu entry, invariably including the % sign and letters for options. If i simply write the name, e.g. mc or aiksaurus (magnificent thesaurus), the new entry doesn't work, although it might work through the terminal or Alt+F2.

Needless to say, i will be VERY grateful. I am otherwise installing applications that cannot be used. I love this community and the vision...the love that will replace money and transform this world.

Slackware :: KDE Menu Editor: Changes Do Not Persist

Oct 9, 2010

Right click on the "K". Choose Menu Editor.Save changes. However, after that, some changes persist, other changes do not and, additionally, some unexpected folders magically appear on the menu (such as "Office-1, Office-2, etc.). Some folders I created never show on the right place (the main menu) but instead tend to persist on a different submenu (such as "Graphics"). If I move them out to the place I want, they immediatly show back in the wrong place. Regular KDE manuals I've seen do not mention this issue or how to go about fixing it (they just tell you to delete an item when you want to delete it, to save the configuration after you are done, etc). Maybe I should switch to Fluxbox immediately. I use Linux mostly for production and research, and all I expect from a GUI is to let me get things done.

Ubuntu :: Alacarte Won't Start Up From The Shell

Jan 8, 2010

When I try to start alacarte from the shell, I get: Traceback (most recent call last):

[Code]...

The reason I start from the shell is because I noticed that it would crash after starting up in system monitor. This problem started after I tried to remove a program from the list which had already been manually removed. When this program was unchecked, the list went completely blank. I tried to revert the list, but it didn't work. Is there any hopes of repair?

Ubuntu :: Doesn't Alacarte Clean Up?

Apr 12, 2010

Ever since I first discovered alacarte (gnome menu editor) I have been creating lots of menus and submenus for gnome menu so I can always find what I want. To avoid having to redo them, whenever I try another gnome based distro or do a fresh install I always copy ~/.local/share/desktop-directories and applications (and a couple of other files, I forget right now) so I can use the same menus in those.

Well, I don't use these custom menus so much lately so have gone for a much simpler solution of creating a "Favourites" submenu and just adding apps I use a lot. It was while rummaging around .local today I noticed there are hundreds of left over files from long since deleted custom menus (like 18 months+) that I have been copying from one distro to another all this time. Why on earth doesn't alacarte delete all these deleted menus and applications files?

I just did a little experiment: I deleted everything out of these folders so I was basically left with the stock gnome menu with no customizations. I then added a new submenu and then added 3 random apps to to it. I then went and deleted two of those apps and when I went to check, sure enough ~/.local/share/applications contained the 3 files instead of one.

Ubuntu :: Applications Menu Failing To Install Properly With Synaptic Package Manager

May 29, 2010

Ubuntu 10.01 Lucid I had a few problems with applications failing to install properly with Synaptic Package Manager which resulted in a slew of launchers in my Applications > Other folder which all delivered error messages. These all had some kind of grey screen icon. I deleted them after uninstalling the applications which failed to install (wine 1.2, wine-gecko 1.2, then later wine 1.0, Wine-gecko 1.0, and winetricks.) I didn't notice that some non-wine applications also were given the grey-screen icon, and accidentally deleted "Archive Mounter." I know that I only deleted the launcher not the application, but don't know how to re-create the launcher in the Applications menu. Would someone...

1 - Right-click on the Applications panel,
2 - Select Edit Menus
3 - Find "Archive Mounter" (probably in "Other" folder)
4 - Select Properties for the launcher, look at the Properties sheet and tell me what the Archive Mounter command is, so I can re-create the launcher manually? And if you could, the path to the icon too

How is that possible? Why depends a simple menu entry from the boot configuration? I hate this so much, because I've made 14 reinstalls the last 3 weeks because of those stupid fails. Is there anybody out there having a solution for me (except reinstalling Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Text Editor Column Editor And Regex Search/replace, Incrementing Number Insert?

Jul 25, 2011

On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved. What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line. The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

OpenSUSE :: Clean Up Alacarte - Move Around Launchers In Application Browser

May 19, 2010

I like openSuSE, but the main thing I miss from Ubuntu is the ability to have complete control over the applications menu. Ubuntu had a clean menu where everything was one level deep, with pretty basic categories. But opening alacarte in openSuSE (running 11.2 with GNOME) is an absolute mess. There are categories for "Astronomy", "Kidsgames", and a whole bunch of folders that I would never use. And it's nearly impossible to get rid of them. Selecting delete almost never works; the closest I've gotten was to re-name a whole bunch of ".directory" files so that the system wouldn't find them, but it still created the majority of them, only this time with generic folders over the default icons.

Plus, I would like to be able to change which application goes to which category in the Application Browser. That menu is much more clean, but I would like to create a "Games" section for it, and move my text editors from Utility to Development. I know that most of the .desktop files are in /usr/share/applications (I have a couple in /usr/local/share), the directories are defined in /usr/share/desktop-directories and ~/.local/share/desktop-directories, and the menu itself seems to define categories in /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu. But despite knowing all of this, I still have no idea how to clean up alacarte and how to move around launchers in the Application Browser.

Debian Configuration :: WYSIWYG Editor For Elog Not Working In Jessie

Oct 21, 2015

I installed elog 2.9.2+2014.05.11git44800a72 on my Jessie system. When entering a new post just a simple plain text editing box is shown instead of the WYSIWYG editor, and no drag and drop area for attachments is shown. When I start the elog service with "systemctl start elog" I get this suspect message in the journal: "FCKedit NOT detected".

Indeed, I see that the elog installation creates a symlink which I guess is supposed to point to the fckeditor installation, which nevertheless is missing:

Code: Select allroot@static-3-080:/usr/share/elog/scripts# ll fckeditor
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Oct 25  2014 fckeditor -> ../../fckeditor
root@static-3-080:/usr/share/elog/scripts# ll ../../fckeditor
ls: cannot access ../../fckeditor: No such file or directory

I installed ckeditor 4.4.4+dfsg1-3 but his did not fix the problem. I'd say that either the elog package is broken or that it misses a dependency on a package providing FCKedit. Or maybe my system is misconfigured?

Ubuntu :: Can't Get 11.04 Working Properly

Apr 28, 2011

I have a Lenovo W500 ThinkPad. It is running XP on first partition, then Ubuntu. I've tried both 10.10, 11.04 beta 2, and now 11.04 release. With the release I just installed, it seemed OK till reboot-after-install, at which point nothing came up. I rebooted several times and just got errors and kernel panics in the ATI video driver. I also saw a lot of these messages:"udevd[80]: worker [XXX] did not accept message -1 (Connection refused), kill it" URL...

I had download updates on, I'm trying again with a clean install without updates. (Although, I said don't download while installing, and it says it is downloading language packs...?)Now, I also had issues with 10.10, where it would intermittently boot and fail to get video, I'd just be at a tty, and have to reboot and try again. I found it usually got video if I had just booted Windows (XP Pro SP3) beforehand, and not otherwise So what's going on there? Something up with the actual video card? I want to run Gnome anyways, is there a way I can specify that during the install? At any rate, if I can't get 11.04 working properly, I'll have to run 10.10, which I didn't want to do. I'm starting from scratch and wish to start from 11.04 if at all possible.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Not Working Properly

Jan 11, 2010

The navigation buttons in firefox are not working and I can not access File, Edit, View, and History pull down menus. This just started today i think. I have 3.5.pre8 and 3.7 installed. both are affected.

Edit: Actually it is a problem with all apps when window is maximized. I cannot access the first 3 or 4 pull down menus or buttons on the tool bar unless the window is not maximized. This happens with konqueror, firefox and Banshee. Have not tested other apps yet.

Edit2: Upper left corner of desktop is also affected. The icons in this part of the screen are not accessible. seems that anything in that region of the screen is dead. just switched from compiz window manager to metacity and there is a black square in the upper left corner of my screen about 2.5"x 2.5".

Ubuntu :: Touch-pad Is Not Working Properly

Oct 11, 2010

upon the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, all upgraded nicely, except for my touchpad, which can't right click anymore, I can use the scroll on the side, and the button-trackpad just functions as a left click.I have an HP Pavilion dv6, with a touchpad like that of the HP Envy, click touchpad, with depressing ends on the bottom and middle respectively for left, middle, and right click.

I submitted a bug report on this when it was in beta, is there a solution to this issue? I use my laptop for work, so I would appreciate a fix... or something I could do aside from uninstalling my Operating System and reinstalling the previous version, which would seem to be a hassle.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Java Working Properly ?

Nov 20, 2010

I can't get java applications to run properly in a lot of cases. I've tried completely removing Java and reinstalling it. I've tried removing Iced Tea and OpenJDK and installing Sun Java instead. I've done a complete, clean reinstall of Ubuntu. The symptoms of my problem never seem to change. Minecraft is the best example I can give you. As soon as the game loads (in the web or on the desktop alike) it closes abruptly. This is what's in the log file.

Code:

I'm thinking "C [+0x416] __kernel_vsyscall+0x2" is important somehow. I can't seem to figure out what it means. I've tested this on a friend's laptop using the same (Ubuntu 10.10) and it works fine, no errors. I know other people are running their java fine.
