OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 OBS Head Kernel Source?

Sep 4, 2010

I had somewhat of a simple questioned I tried out the latest revision to the Kernel of Day for Opensuse 11.2 built against the master. kernel-default-2.6.36-rc3.10.1.i586.rpm however looking at the tree it appears Novell/Suse doesn't release the source.rpm thinking I could recompile it to support the dependencies that I'm missing. See the message below-

Ubuntu Networking :: Sitecom WL-345 Wireless USB Adapter

Jan 1, 2010

I am trying to get the above wireless adapter o work with Ubuntu. I have installed ndiswrapper but I am unsure what windows driver I need that will work with it.

When I type lsusb I get the following: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0df6:0042 Sitecom Europe B.V.

I tried searching the ndiswraper site but all I could find was Sitecom WL-344 300N X2 Wireless USB Adapter that pointed me to Driver: rt2870.inf and rt2870.sys (on Windows XP).

I am not sure if this will work or where to download these files, so I was wondering if anyone else has this adapter that could shed some light onto how to get it working.

Edit: I just tried the rt2870 driver and it didnt work

Ubuntu Networking :: Sitecom Wireless Card Not Working

Apr 4, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu (Koala) on an old (but worthy) Toshiba laptop. It's got a Sitecom WL-140 wireless card. (BTW I'm new to Ubuntu, but an old hand at Solaris). Can't get the card to work, although I think It's nearly there. nm-tool shows driver is p54pci. The activity light shows an orange light occasionally. State is disconnected. I'm not really sure whether I should be using the supplied driver (p54pci) or the Windows driver for this card and ndiswrapper. I've installed the Windows driver with ndiswrapper thinking this may fix it but no.
ndiswrapper -l says wlancig: driver installed and device (1260:3886) present.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sitecom WL-364 WUSB Not Recognized As Wireless Adapter?

Jul 16, 2011

I bought myself a Sitecom Wireless Network USB Micro Adapter 300N X3 (Sitecom WL-364) today. When I place the adapter in my PC, it is not recognised as a wireless adapter.

There are similar posts like this one, most of them are about conflicting drivers. According to this post I shouldn't be worried about that (as I'm working in 11.04 32-bit).

The output of lsusb is this:

Code:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0df6:0051 Sitecom Europe B.V.

Also, I was having a hard time getting to know the chipset of the adapter. Is RT2870 the right driver for the adapter?

Fedora :: F15 Kernel 2.6.38.8-35 Prevents Triple-head With Radeon Driver?

Jul 28, 2011

Yesterday I updated my F15 x86_64 system from kernel 2.6.38.6-27 to 2.6.38.8-35. After the reboot, my triple-head system complained of not having enough CRTCs and only 2 screens worked. Other components were also updated, including some X11 components, however selecting a fallback kernel at the grub prompt indicates this follows the kernel (fall back to old kernel has all 3 monitors working). xrandr --verbose on the 2.6.38.6-27 kernel shows each of the 3 monitors assigned to separate CRTC entries, with CRTCs 0 thru 5 available.

Same command on the new 2.6.38.8-35 system only shows CRTCs 0 & 1 available. My system using an XFX Radeon HD5450 card, with 3 interfaces: HDMI, DVI, VGA. The default Fedora open source "radeon" driver allows all 3 interfaces to be usable. However, with the new kernel, the loss of several CRTCs prevents the 3rd monitor from working. What are the thoughts from the community? I've searched various forums here and haven't seen similar symptoms reported. I'm looking for any direction/experience/thingsToTry from others before trying to open a bug report. (Attempts to use the Catalyst driver several months ago resulted in only 2 of the 3 connected monitors working.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Kernel Patches 3038 And 3709 With Compat-wireless?

Feb 6, 2011

Just installed 11.3 on a older Dell Dimension 8200 with a D-Link DWA-160 N dual band USB card. The install went ok and the card works (seems a little slow right now but that is next on the list). However, when I run YOU I get the following conflict:

"compat-wireless-kmp-default-2.6.37_k2.6.34.0_12-17.1.i586 requires kernel (default:drivers_usb_core)=6faa2c62dac4f41d, but this requirement cannot be met. Uninstallable providers: kernel-default-base-2.6.34-12.3.i586[openSUSE-11.3 11.3-1.82]"

when the system wants to install patch:Kernel-3038.noarch and patch:Kernel-3709.noarch. I cannot seem to find a suitable provider for the default:drivers_usb_core. Is this something to address here or do I need to go to [URL]?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: 11.4 - Kernel Update Broke Wireless

Aug 3, 2011

I just performed the newest kernel update to version 2.6.37.6-0.7 (desktop). Unfortunately, there is no update for the compat-wireless package available. It's still the version for kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5. Hence, my wireless is currently not working and I had to pull a cable through my apartment to write these lines. I actually thought due to the change of the very last digit in the kernel version that this should be a rather safe update. But I also had to recompile the modules of the NVidia driver and of Virtualbox. Does anyone has an idea when new compat-wireless modules will be available? Or do I have to re-compile them myself (I never had to do that before and I really hope that I don't have to)? Or is there a trick to make the old modules work?

OpenSUSE Install :: X.org Dual-head Under 11.3 With Radeon?

Jul 16, 2010

I've just performed a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.3. System specs include GA-MA790X-DS4, PhenomII X4 940 AM2+, Sapphire RadeonHD 3670, two monitors. What I'm trying to accomplish is to set up my KDE desktop to (as it did under 11.2) use a multi-desktop multi-output non-cloned setup, so that I can use my two monitors side by side and maximize windows in either one respectively, etc.

So here I am with my newly installed system. Obviously I can't use fglrx, as it doesn't yet support the 2.6.34 kernel, so amdcccle is right out. SaX2, I notice, is gone. I have tried using KDE's built-in configuration tools, but the dual-head setup doesn't persist between logins. Strangely, windows that were open on the second monitor do vanish off-screen, but the monitors return to their overlapped positions so it's useless. Monitor 2 doesn't even retain its resolution setting. As one does, I decided I'd manually edit the X configuration file. SHOCK HORROR! No xorg.conf So what I'm driving at is this: How oh how do I configure my X.org to remember that it has two, quite different, monitors under openSUSE 11.3 ? Sorry if this post is hard to follow, I got very little sleep while trying to sort out the myriad problems I caused myself in upgrading.

OpenSUSE :: How To Connect Remotely To A Dual-head KDE 4.6 Desktop

Jun 22, 2011

In this particular example I am using NoMachine's NX, although the behaviour also occurs when running VNC for instance. I'd like to connect from my laptop (1 physical screen), to my desktop at work (2 physical screen) via NX. It all works but the following problem occurs: When I connect with my laptop to my desktop I (almost) always am connected to the 2nd physical screen, whereas all windows appear on this first screen. I can interact with my desktop, use the task manager etc, see which windows are running, but any application I start, starts on the first screen (which I cannot see) and for the life of me I cannot move them from screen1 to screen2 without dragging them (which obviously is impossible since I only see screen2).The obvious workaround is: *before* you connect disable the second screen via the display manager but for me this is a non-pratical work around because it requires a lot of actions before heading home. how I can connect from a single-head desktop to a dual-head desktop without crippeling my desktop experience?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Head Speakers - Sound Redirection

Mar 29, 2010

I am using the acer aspire 7736ZG and I have a weird problem. Everytime I connect some external headspeakers (headset?) on my laptop the built in speakers are not muted. My laptop is a dual boot and this problem does not exist on Windows 7, which probably means that this is not some strange hardware problem. there speakers are plugged into a black "hole" as there is not green one available.

Actually there are 3 colored "holes" for the jacks to be plugged in. A blue one (do not have a clue what might be plugged in there). A pink one which is for microphone and a black one which works fine in Windows 7 when i plug in my headset. So what I should try to check to fix this weird problem?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't Get A Dual Head System To Work: Suse 11.3?

Oct 6, 2010

I have two identical Samsung monitors. One is connected. to my motherboard VGA port (and appears as a Radeon HD 4200).The other is connected to a VGA port on a separate PCI Radeon 9200 PRO board. When I first installed Suse 11.3, I had to go through the nomodeset boot command (otherwise my system froze up on boot) and I only get video on the screen connected to the motherboard. The other monitor light. flashes which means it's not seeing a video signal. And, I do not have an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11.

So I did the following:

I did an Xorg -config which created an xorg.conf.new file which looked sensible in that it showed both Radeons, and appeared to set up a dual-head system. The only change I made was to change the driver for both controllers from radeon to radeonhd. Then, I copied xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted. And, nothing is changed. I still need to do nomodeset on boot and I still only get video on the screen connected to the motherboard. I'd attach the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files, but it says I can't add attachments to this post. I don't see any major errors in the Xorg.0.log file, but a lot of it is greek to me.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Surviving A Kernel Update - ATI - Wireless

Mar 26, 2010

I have an HPDV7 laptop running 11.2 and experienced this weeks panic when kernel updated. With help of the forum, I have recovered, but have some broader questions. First - I would like to second the motion that this post get some sort of super-sticky status - ATI Radeon driver blown away! - openSUSE Forums

Question: Is there a way to make double sure that a kernel update is desired by the user? I do not recall agreeing to an upgrade, but perhaps just was too distracted to notice that a new kernel was part of other normal updates. Given that this is a mobile laptop, I would not normally want to go thru the update process when not connected to Ethernet.

Comment: For my DV7, I run 3 packages different from the standard kernel:Video: fglrx from the ATI Repository oldcpu has that covered in the post above. Wireless: compat-wireless, which provides an ath9k driver with improved interface with NetworkManager and significantly improved 802.11N performance NIC: R8101 driver from the NIC repository, again for improved interface with NetworkManager For this latest kernel update, I had to reinstall fglrx and compat wireless. The NIC driver seems OK. Comment: I run 11.2/KDE4.3.5 with the above tweaks. It runs extremely well, particularly when compared to the stock Vista the laptop came with.

I've done the same exactly given in some other link -

Steps-

make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

After rebooting it's not showing anything new.Just the boot menu with the older one. Experts, Kindly let me know what I'm missing?

I have it working on Ubuntu 9.10 installed along with Windows 7, install it to Open Suse which I find to be a beautiful and slick distro. Ive played around with it in Vbox and I find it to be clean compared with Ubuntu which is quite buggy. this Quad and all disabled people to get onto OpenSUSE? There is very little in the way of these types of assistive technologies for Linux because of the costs.
