OpenSUSE :: Suse Update Service For Enterprise Version?
Jul 17, 2011
Last winter we had the intention of using VMWare branded Novell Suse Enterprise as we were going to be getting the licenses/subscription through the purchase of Vsphere. Since that time we have set up 4 VMs, and have been testing an application that will soon be going into production status. However a new issue has arisen. As we are over budget we will not get the Vsphere license (which included Suse subscription). We also found that the added features of a Vsphere license do not really add anything over the free ESX hypervisor.
On the one hand these servers have all been configured precisely, on the other hand we have no update service from which I understand we would need a Novell subscription. Most of the repositories we have added are external to Novell, meaning they are community ones. So my questions are this:
1.) Can we use Opensuse community repositories for the Online Update?
2.) If not is there a way to easily 'convert' Enterprise Suse to Opensuse?
Obviously what we first want to avoid is having to do a brand new install of Opensuse and spend the time moving data from the old to the new. One of the issues that has caused the delay and over runs is that the application we will be deploying has not lived up to its promises, and has caused considerable amount of time configuring, tweaking, and de-bugging.
Does anyone know how to update firefox in SuSE Enterprise Desktop 11? I have upgraded the kernel to 2.6.33.2. I have tried to add the opensuse repository with no joy.
Im currently trying to update my Suse 11.1 copy of Linux.
I got some messages that Clamav was not up to date.
I tried to use YUM which I installed on the machine but that did nothing.
It seems that I can only update Clamav by using Klamav.
Whats happening is that the system is telling me that its going to recompile Clamav, starts doing various tasks but doesnt really work.
When I use YUM on my CentOS 5.3 server it simply updates Clamav to the current version and then I use Freshclam to update the virus definitionsdone.
My questions is this; is there anyway to get the latest version of Clamav without going through the that Klamav thing. Klamav seems O.K. for updating the virus definitions but thats all.
Whats wrong with all the Linux software people?
Cant they just get their act together and make their software work. Im also trying to set up a mail server on my Suse 11.1 box but between figuring out how to install Postfix, Dovecot, Cirus-IMAP Im not getting anywhere.
As much as I hate to say this, these things only seem to be rocket science on Linux. I have much less problems installing software on Windoz.
Linux software people need to come up with workable install programs for their software products so more people who arent software experts can make Linux really workable.
I was tryin to install virtualbox on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 and it said it needs pad-devil. I looked in the software archive that came with sled 11 but it wasnt there. I tried downloading the VirtualBox install for Suse Linux Enterprise Server but got the same error as when i tried install VirtualBox with the opensuse 11.1 rpm file. can virtualbox even be install on sled? (has anyone done it?) and if so where can i find pam-devil?
I am trying to connect to the webserver using ftp command and i get the following response. Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Unknown protocol ''. I also installed filezilla and used it, however it is getting timedout often in about 1 minute. How do i increase the time out or correct the ftp program.
I have read that some linux distributions will all be join into a single distribution called canterbury. How could we upgrade the linux suse when the this new version comes? with the zypper dup maybe?
Is there a link to download a version of Suse with either kernel 2.6.26 or 2.6.28? For some reasons I have, I need one of these kernel versions. The newest download here, 2.6.37, won't work for me.
This has been a problem and desipite my best efforts I am at a loss to explain what is happening.
I am running a Suse 11 box and I will be storing some automated backups on an XP box. The Suse box is hosting a samba domain to which the xp box is a member.
For the moment the share permissions are wide open while I troubleshoot (everyone full access on the xp share) I can mount the share no problem on the Suse box and even read the contents. If I attempt to write to the share though I get permission denied (logged in as root at the moment)
I created the mount point using mkdir -p /media/backup Then I mounted the share using mount -t cifs //172.16.16.245/backup /media/backup -o username=root, -o password=XXXXXXX
share on the XP box is also called backup (just in case there was any confusion regarding the mount command I used)
if I run an ls -l on the mount point afterwords I can see my files already in the share no problem. I would be very greatful if anyone can point out what I have done wrong so I can get this fixed once and for all. Thank you in advance.
I should probably also mention that both systems are on the same lan and at the moment firewalls are down until this is fixed.
i want to know url of sled...so that i can update my softwares...i can fine it for opensuse..but not sled..can opensuse url works for sled.repository url for necessary software ...
I have installed the Suse Enterprise server 11 SP1 on my laptop. I have the atheros AR8132 network card, and it seams the suse is detecting correctly, but i can't start the network up. He returns an erros saying that the eth0 is not supported by suse, or kernel, i must check to be sure.
I am using SUSE enterprise server 11 SP1. I have jboss server application 4.0.5 GA in the above O.S where I have some problem in running the jboss. How and where to download the latest jboss server for the O.S
I am trying to install openldap 2.4.21 in redhat enterprise 5 version and I am having some issues. When I ran the configure command, I had the following error.
checking for Berkeley DB major version in db.h... 4 checking for Berkeley DB minor version in db.h... 3 checking if Berkeley DB version supported by BDB/HDB backends... no configure: error: BerkeleyDB version incompatible with BDB/HDB backends
So I downloaded and installed Berkeley DB 4.8.26 version. But my problem is how do I make openldap to point to this.
I have suse 11.0 installed and now that 11.1 is out i would like to update. I have searched for this already and have found three ways of doing it:
zypper dup zypper up
in YAST view all packages and right click and click update all if update available. I have tried all these methods but i still seem to be running Suse 11.0 as it says in sysinfo:/ . How do i successfully update from 11.0 to 11.1?
I tried to download the Suse 11.2 DVD to do an install. When I went to do the install it failed cause it was corrupt. Not to big of deal, I had an older version of 10.2.Now that I have 10.2 installed, is there a way for me to upgrade this to 11.2 without downloading the Install DVD.I've been away from messing with Linux for a few months so I'm pretty darn rusty. I'll run Linux for awhile and when I get frustrated I'll move back to Windows. I'll mess with that for a few months and then go back to Linux...
We are in the process of testing SLES 10 SP1 installation, onto a new system.
Initially the installation got failed at the start giving following error :
"Could not find the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Installation CD. Activating Manual setup program."
What is interesting to notice is , if we use SLES 10 SP2 to boot the system upto the Installation menu and then replace the CD with SLES 10 SP1 media, the installation proceeds as normal without any error.
Not sure that could be the problematic thing over here. Does it mean with SP1 , no cdrom/cd or hard disk gets detected ?
I'm trying to install a GeForce 8600 XT card into novell Open Enterprise SUSE 11 so that I can get the 3D Cube to work. It currently does not work with the default nvidia card onthe motherboard.I can not find the correct driver for the GeForce 8600XT card. Can someone identify the driver I should be using please? Then if someone could also direct me to the "How to install a Video Driver" tutorial,
UPDATE:I've downloaded the correct drivers but it still says that my hardware does not support Desktop enhancements etc ... I think the GeForce 8600 XT just doesn't support 3D accelleration ... period. Can someone suggest a reasonably priced video card that is easy to install and which supports 3D Accelleration please?
someone decided for whatever reason to ship Suse 11.4 with a broken version of Scribus. Not only is the application missing in the KDE-Menu after installation (had to add it manually) but it is crashing frequently. Whenever one adds new text in a Textbox (which will NOT be formated with the specified default font but the first in the list) and then immediately changes the font without first leaving the input-focus of that box: Segfault / signal 11. I understand that there is a RC2 out by now and the specific error seems to be fixed by that.
Now my question is: After having decided to ship sUSE 11.4 with a RC: Will further RCs and maybe the final release of scribus be shipped by the OpenSuse Update? Or does the user have to manually install a working version of that software?
if I can update the OS (new security updates, patches etc also) on a system that ain't having any internet connection. Simply i would like to know if there is any packs like rpm/ tar files available, so that we can install the updates easily..I am using opensuse..

I'm a Linux novice and I'm looking to update the netbeans from the 6.8 to version 7.0. What's the best way to do this, can I just do a search in Yast and delete the 6.8 before I download and run the 7.0 script? Or should I do a side by side install?
I'm wondering why everytime I install "recomended" updates, my KDE or X server crashes completely! is there any guide or advice you can give me to succesfully update only the packages that are really needed?
I have installed Suse 11.3 on my computer yesterday but since then I have been trying to update it but unable to do so. Everytime I try I get this error message: "system management is locked by the application with pid 6953 (usr/sbin/packagekitd). close this appliaction before trying again."
