SUSE :: 11 Enterprise Cannot Write To XP Share / What To Do?

This has been a problem and desipite my best efforts I am at a loss to explain what is happening.
I am running a Suse 11 box and I will be storing some automated backups on an XP box. The Suse box is hosting a samba domain to which the xp box is a member.
For the moment the share permissions are wide open while I troubleshoot (everyone full access on the xp share) I can mount the share no problem on the Suse box and even read the contents. If I attempt to write to the share though I get permission denied (logged in as root at the moment)
I created the mount point using mkdir -p /media/backup
Then I mounted the share using mount -t cifs //172.16.16.245/backup /media/backup -o username=root, -o password=XXXXXXX
share on the XP box is also called backup (just in case there was any confusion regarding the mount command I used)
if I run an ls -l on the mount point afterwords I can see my files already in the share no problem. I would be very greatful if anyone can point out what I have done wrong so I can get this fixed once and for all. Thank you in advance.
I should probably also mention that both systems are on the same lan and at the moment firewalls are down until this is fixed.

I can mount the NTFS in read only mode, but i need write access too. how can i mount NTFS partition in read/write mode..?

I was tryin to install virtualbox on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 and it said it needs pad-devil. I looked in the software archive that came with sled 11 but it wasnt there. I tried downloading the VirtualBox install for Suse Linux Enterprise Server but got the same error as when i tried install VirtualBox with the opensuse 11.1 rpm file. can virtualbox even be install on sled? (has anyone done it?) and if so where can i find pam-devil?

OK... I tried everything i could think of... but i still cannot get my Open SUSE 11.1 to mount my samba share at boot! I still don't understand the 11.1 boot sequence. can NE one help me... tell me what files to give you output from... Ty guys P.S. My shares originate from a Windows Server 2003 RC2 machine, and it's dns server doesn't work correctly... so my mount command is
mount -t //192.168.x.x/files/ /nET/ -o username=linux,password=xxxxxx
please let me know what other info you need... I don't have the internet, so it will be tommorow b4 i see this again!!! Thanks

Last winter we had the intention of using VMWare branded Novell Suse Enterprise as we were going to be getting the licenses/subscription through the purchase of Vsphere. Since that time we have set up 4 VMs, and have been testing an application that will soon be going into production status. However a new issue has arisen. As we are over budget we will not get the Vsphere license (which included Suse subscription). We also found that the added features of a Vsphere license do not really add anything over the free ESX hypervisor.
On the one hand these servers have all been configured precisely, on the other hand we have no update service from which I understand we would need a Novell subscription. Most of the repositories we have added are external to Novell, meaning they are community ones. So my questions are this:
1.) Can we use Opensuse community repositories for the Online Update?
2.) If not is there a way to easily 'convert' Enterprise Suse to Opensuse?
Obviously what we first want to avoid is having to do a brand new install of Opensuse and spend the time moving data from the old to the new. One of the issues that has caused the delay and over runs is that the application we will be deploying has not lived up to its promises, and has caused considerable amount of time configuring, tweaking, and de-bugging.

I have installed the Suse Enterprise server 11 SP1 on my laptop. I have the atheros AR8132 network card, and it seams the suse is detecting correctly, but i can't start the network up. He returns an erros saying that the eth0 is not supported by suse, or kernel, i must check to be sure.

I'm trying to get the 3D Cube desktop working in SUSE 11 Enterprise Desktop.
I have tried this with the onboard NVidea graphics card and with an added GeForce 8600 XT card with no luck.
No matter what I try, I get an error when I turn on the Desktop enhancements which says that my hardware does not support this feature?
why this particular feature is such a pain to install?

We are in the process of testing SLES 10 SP1 installation, onto a new system.
Initially the installation got failed at the start giving following error :
"Could not find the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Installation CD. Activating Manual setup program."
What is interesting to notice is , if we use SLES 10 SP2 to boot the system upto the Installation menu and then replace the CD with SLES 10 SP1 media, the installation proceeds as normal without any error.
Not sure that could be the problematic thing over here. Does it mean with SP1 , no cdrom/cd or hard disk gets detected ?

I'm trying to install a GeForce 8600 XT card into novell Open Enterprise SUSE 11 so that I can get the 3D Cube to work. It currently does not work with the default nvidia card onthe motherboard.I can not find the correct driver for the GeForce 8600XT card. Can someone identify the driver I should be using please? Then if someone could also direct me to the "How to install a Video Driver" tutorial,
UPDATE:I've downloaded the correct drivers but it still says that my hardware does not support Desktop enhancements etc ... I think the GeForce 8600 XT just doesn't support 3D accelleration ... period.Can someone suggest a reasonably priced video card that is easy to install and which supports 3D Accelleration please?

I am trying to see if I can swap out our 150+ Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Server for CentOS. From my initial thoughts I can. I am however running into an issue with the firstboot. Currently, we use firstboot on Suse with our base image. We created an image which we deploy and then firstboot runs our necessary scripts to configure the networking and office specific settings. I want to test this out but when I search for the firstboot.xml file I can't find it. I need to modify the config file and change the way the firstboot runs. Is this possible with CentOS?
I am also wondering if anyone is using Novell ZenWorks Linux Management to manage their CentOS instances or if you are using something else I would like to hear what tool you're using. I would need the ability to deploy patch/ security updates and make occasionally changes to files, not very often though.
Just a brief run down of what the server(s) will be doing. Their primary purpose is to provide caching via squid and the use of the browser for new hires until they get their notebooks. The browser runs Java and flash and the ability to print is also necessary. Pretty basic stuff so I am looking at CentOS cause the forums look very active!

I can't see any option for recursive directories in nfs in fedora 13.

When i mount the directory /media/Data from another Fedora 13 box i don't have read and write permissions for each and every file. The -R recursive option would be handy unfortunately this option is unavailable. The red hat docs have not been helpful in this respect.

The mounted partition is of the ext3 type. With the nfs-3g type i don't have any issue however most of my directories/partitions are of the ext3 type so i need get it sorted.
I changed my user name id number to the same number on all boxes thus giving me write access. There must be a better solution than this.

I'm getting some strange behavior when trying to create directories on an nfs share on a linux machine that I'm accessing from Mac OS X 10.4.
I can copy files but cannot create new files or directories. I've given every directory and file that's in the share directory rwx access for groups, users and owner and changed user to 777. The line I've added to my /etc/exports file is;

/home/Music 10.1.1.1/24 (rw,async,no_subtree_check,insecure) how I can start trouble shooting this? If I can copy a file why can't I create a new file/directory?

I have a Samba Share which is mounted on various linux systems throughout the network. Whenever any of my user access those files using vim, Gedit it works fine and get perfect permissions to read/write those files. but whenever they try to open with any php IDE (quanta plus, geany, eclipse-pdt) they get error while saving those files. I dont think it is a permission or samba issue because we are able to edit/save those files using normal editors..

I'm having some issues writing files through dolphin (smb://computer_name/) to a Windows SBS share. It seems that every time I try and write a file it simply creates a 32KB file.
I was previously able to write to this (Opensuse 11.0 / 11.1 / 11.2) and nothing has changed on the Windows server (besides for windows updates).
I'm running:
Opensuse 11.3 KDE Version 4.5.2 (KDE 4.5.2) "release 10"

I have this samba share for ghosting images to (backing up computers at work) and I can read the ghost images just fine from the share, but I am unable to write to the share. From any windows environment I have tried, I get a disk is full error. I have 200GB+ free space, so this is not the actual issue. I believe there is a write permission somewhere that I am overlooking. My setup basically lets me log in under the username samba from a client machine.

I've tried chown on /media/Images to make it owned by samba, but it just reverts once I remount the partition. Either that or my eyes are playing tricks on me.

I am using samba t share my files.I am sharing /media/MEDIA folder. it is a ntfs partition mounted with ntfs-3g with write/read access from linux.I can see and browse my shares and also create files in the root of this partition, ie /media/MEDIA, but in its subfolders i do not have write permissions.
another interesting thing is that i have permission to create directory and delete files everywhere and in any folder, subfolder but when trying to create files i get not enough free disk space error.by the way i dont know if this config file is correct, i find as template in internet.

I can map the share just fine, but cannot write, regardless of how open I make the permissions of the Samba share.

i have setup a samba server and created samba shares on it, i have configured the samba server to authenticates users from a windows server 2003 DC,
i have 2 shares call IT and MYSHARE, I want to give read and write permissions to sevaral users to those two shares and read only permisson to all the other users.
