Has anyone noticed an increase in runtime for sort? I'm having to sort large, 30+ GB text files, and I've noticed a substantial increase in the time needed to sort files in 11.4. Files that take maybe two hours to sort under previous conditions now take multiple hours.
View 2 RepliesI'm using Linux Mint 8. However, internet browser speed is very slow as compared to using the same computer with Windows. In Linux, I've used Firefox 3.5 and Epiphany 2.28. Epiphany runs somewhat faster than Firefox so I mainly use it for the internet.
What I would like to know is if Epiphany browser 2.30 is noticably faster than 2.28? Should I go thru the trouble of upgrading to Mint 9 inorder to be able to use Epiphany 2.3 - as well as Chromium 8?

It used to have a lightening speed. But now every application is taking few seconds to start, even on Konsole, the commands take some seconds to get typed ! (I literally have to wait for cursor to move and commands to get typed on Konsole). Folders are taking some seconds to get opened !
I rebooted the computer but that proved to be useless.

Im experiencing a strange problem with 10.04. When it first boots up its reasonably quick (as snappy as Gnome ever has been) but after its been running for a day or two it gets ununsably slow and has to be rebooted.
I dont see how it can be anything to do with my hardware as it runs OK when first started. Ive monitored RAM usage and it doesnt seem to differ much. There's always the same amount unused.
I have been running opensuse 11.2 successfully on my IBM NetVista 1.8 GHz for a year or more. Response is quick, no problems.
Downloaded the DVD for 11.3 and installed it (new install replacing the / system partition but leaving /home intact, renamed /home...kde4 to .kde4old). Install was fine, but on final boot the response of 11.3 was noticeably slower than 11.2, I would estimate about half speed. I tried compiling a new kernel to see if it improved, but the kernel compile was taking for ever so I stopped it. Editing the kickoff menu was close to impossible - saving a change resulted in "Updating system configuration" which would crawl to 100% and then start over again; after the 5th iteration I cancelled it.
In fact this got so bad (slowness, odd errors) that I am in the process of restoring 11.2. This new install of 11.2 is noticeably faster again than the 11.3.
My system has a good hard drive and 1GB memory. Am I underpowered for something in 11.3? I could not figure that there was anything specifically different in 11.3 that could be disabled to restore the speed of 11.2.
ANyone here tried firefox 3.7a5 and/or 4beta? I'd be interested in finding out everyone's experience because I found that when I ran the below web test, 3.7 got 60fps and 4b got about 22 fps! I un-installed all the mysql stuff that was was downloaded and installed during the amarok installation but this hasn't really helped either.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using openSUSE 11.2 64bit in Dell E6400 with Intel video chipset. I can play x264 720p files without any problems in Windows 7, but in openSUSE, I could play it in Totem, but it is very slow (lots of stopping).
In addition, in songbird, if I use the mediaflow add-on,the scroll becomes really sluggish.
In general, I feel like openSUSE is showing less ram usage but higher CPU usage than Windows 7. Is my video card driver is messed up? I really like openSUSE a lot but so it is disappointing....
I am using OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bits) with KDE 4.3.1. My hard disk partition contains 3 areas : / + /home + swap. Frequently the / area is filling with, I suppose, temporary files until it is full (15 Go) and that in a very short time, typically about 5 mn. Then, these files are cleaned by the system, when disk space is needed I suppose. The point is that during this time, the system goes slower and slower until the "cleaning". That seems to occur only when Firefox (3.5.6) is running so I suppose that these files are temporary internet files.
View 9 Replies View Relatedcurrently on an acer aspire 5532, and using mozilla and google chrome. webpages take about 10-12 seconds to load using the ethernet, wifi its about 2-3 seconds. using eth0 loading videos - broadcast yourself. in chrome, will sit at "resolving host" for about 10 seconds before bringing up the page. you would think eth0 is faster than wlan0, but for browsing the web its slower. i tested the speeds at speedtest.net - the global broadband speed test and both wlan0 and eth0 get the max speed my internet provides.i never downloaded drivers for the ethernet card or wifi, they worked so i didn't try to mess with them. but perhaps that is my problem?

recently I have installed a brand new machine with 11.2. Machine boots so incredibly fast so I decided to upgraded another older machine from 11.1 to 11.2. Upgrade went fine but old machine boots significantly slower. On new I see message "doing fastboot" and few seconds later KDE starts loading. Amazing. On old I just experience regular boot, speed is comparable to old 11.1.What am I missing after upgrade? Same kernel, almost same set of services. Both machines are pretty regular PCs/x86_64, however old one have faster/better hardware (more cores, more GHz, more RAM, 2 disks in software raid-0).

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:

'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '

'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.

I am using Suse 11.1 on a 64-bit computer. Some time ago, I was helped on these forums to get a Brother MFC-640CW printer/scanner to work by downloading the relevant drivers from the Brother website. Although the printer works fine, when I attempt to scan something into the computer nothing happens. A pop up box appears on screen when the printer is used with an XP OS. Can anybody suggest a way to get the scanner working?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter an upgrade to opensuse 11.3 from 11.2 it turns out that cron uses pam for authentication. Now I have one user 'mythtv' which does not have a login and is not part of the 'users' group. This user is being denied access (permission denied messages in /var/log/messages from crond).
Now, I have been experimenting with the /etc/pam.d/crond config file. I wanted to use the pam_listfile module to grant access to this specific user without authentication. That however didn't work and I have now narrowed down the problem even more.

My system auto-logs in and I know there's a bug in seahorse that doesn't like that method.
Anyway, I tried to unlock my "Passwords: login" in seahorse, but it won't budge.
The details about this user are that I re-used an 11.3 /home/$user directory. Could that be the reason?
I logged out of the Desktop and back in using my password manually.
I can sudo with my password. I can change the system with my password everywhere except in seahorse.
The password is exactly the same in 11.4 as it was in 11.3.
The .gnupg/ directory is 600 and its contents are all 600 except for agent.info which is 644.

I am a complete newbie who recently installed openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit). My desktop is KDE. Motherboard is MSI X58 Eclipse. Audio card (came with MB) is Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme H/W.
As the title of my message indicates, there's no sound coming out from the speakers. I know that both speakers and sound card work fine because I just tested them under Windows XP.
I launched YaST, chose the Sound icon, clicked on Add, selected Creative Labs. The sound card model that comes close to the one I have should be X-Fi. So I chose that, selected Quick Automatic Setup and I get the following error message:
An error occurred during the installation of X-Fi. The kernel module snd-ctxfi for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
I then went to Open Source - SoundCard Support (Creative Labs' Open Source - SoundCard Support) but I did not download any drivers because of the following warnings:
* THIS IS AN UNSUPPORTED BETA DRIVER. There is no technical support for this driver.
* This beta driver has only been tested on the following 32-bit / 64-bit Linux distributions: Ubuntu� 7.10, openSUSE� 10.3 and Red Hat� Enterprise Linux� 5.1 (64-bit only).

I'm running headless server, and need to sort all packages in YAST by size. I can't see the option in YaST anywhere.

I've found an other thread (11.2 - Cups ends /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed - openSUSE Forums) regarding the same problem but with 11.2 milestone 1 and the solutions seemed to be to downgrade to an older cups and ghostscript version.
I have tried installing 11.2 64 bit with Gnome. Every time if finishes the install and reboots it will start HAL daemon and just black screen. I have tried loading with using the number 3 with no video. Same thing black screen after loading HAL daemon. I did a install with selecting VESA same thing.

I tried to enable the Cube desktop feature through desktop settings and when I pressed the apply button the system crashed. The screen freezed and the laptop wasn't responding to anything.
So I rebooted the laptop and now every time gets stack in the green screen and trying to load but it never does. I suspect that it has to do with my ATI card because a couple of 3d games would crash the system too. I tried some solutions that I found here like disabling the desktop effects by tweaking kwinrc file but it didn't worked.
Does anyone know how to disable that Cube feature from failsafe mode?
