OpenSUSE :: Single-card Multiseat: Xephyr Freezes?
Aug 28, 2011
I have a multiseat installation consisting of a single graphics card controlling two screens, with one Xephyr instance on each. Each one has its corresponding mouse and keyboard assigned via appropriate command line switches--evdev is used as the input device driver.
Since a recent "zypper update" (about two weeks ago), this configuration has been having problems: as long as the keyboard and mouse are not being used, it runs fine (e.g., over the weekend when it just sits on the KDM login screen), but when it is being actively used, the Xephyr process will eventually end up in a hard lock-up requiring a kill -9. A lock-up of one Xephyr screen does not seem to affect the other, although both will end up frozen eventually--sometimes this takes only a couple of minutes after the user starts his activity, and sometimes it may work for half an hour or so before it gives up the ghost.
There are no relevant log entries anywhere I could find, and neither is anything reported on Xephyr's stderr/stdout. I have tried downgrading to an older version of Xephyr, as well as compiling xorg-x11-server-extra locally from source, with no success. Only thing I can think of is downgrading to the previous kernel. Unlike my Debian machines though, OpenSUSE does not seem to keep the last few previous kernels for you to boot into in case of problems, and I can't see how to downgrade kernel via Yast2.

I am trying to make a Live CD which makes use of Xephyr. Xephyr seems to do the job I need, however it seems that I can't copy things from the rest of my windows to paste into the Xephyr window, and copy things out of the Xephyr window to paste into the rest of the windows.I have the live CD here [URL] , and if people using the live cd can not copy things into the Xephyr window, then I imagine it will be very frustrating to use.is there any way to share the clipboard between two Xservers? Any thing I am missing?

i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn't working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn't work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.

Well, i guess it is the graphic card:
I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)

I've only ever written one or two simple bash scripts before but how hard could it be, right? I'd like to make a script that will launch an Xephyr window of a specific size with a window manager, an xterm, and Google Chrome running in it.I have:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
Xephyr :100 -screen 790x590 &
DISPLAY=:100 xterm&
[code]....
But it doesn't work. All I get is the Xephyr window, nothing else will launch. It works fine if I just run the DISPLAY... commands from a terminal window but I can't automate it with the script. I get the sense that this is a newbie mistake in understanding the ways scripts are supposed to work but I haven't the faintest idea how to get it to do what I want.

I recently installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 with the intent of using it as a platform for running a couple of Windows XP virtual machines along with Linux/Ubuntu.
I had no problems getting the server installed. Had no problems getting the network up and running so that I had access to both my internal network as well as external connectivity to the internet. Had no problems getting a VM installed and putting Windows XP inside of it. Had no problems setting up a bridge between the WinXP virtual machine and the physical ethernet card (eth0).
What Im having trouble with is figuring out how to bridge from multiple VMs AND Ubuntu natively through one physical ethernet card.
When I set up the bridge, it knocks out the static IP address of the ethernet card that was set up initially with Ubuntu when first installed before the VM was created and installed. Therefore, connectivity within Ubuntu natively is lost.
Similarly, am having trouble figuring out how the second VM (also going to be running WinXP) is going to get its connectivity since it doesnt seem to like me setting up 2 bridges to the same physical ethernet interface card.
I need all 3 machines to have static IP addresses and be visible/accessible from the external network for either web/mail/dns/etc servers on the Ubuntu side and for remote PC control functionality on the VM side.
I have tried setting up alias ethernet interfaces (eth0:1, eth0:2, eth0:3) with static addresses which work fine from native Ubuntu in presenting multiple IP addressees, but it seems that Im not permitted to bridge to these alias interfaces.

I am attempting to copy files to a 1GB SD card using my built-in SD card reader on my notebook computer. This function worked great on Hardy Heron. However, I switched to Karmic Koala about a week ago. Upon insertion of the SD card, the entire desktop (including mouse cursor) will freeze for about 30 seconds. Then, the SD card apparently mounts with an icon showing on the desktop. I can then open Nautilus and view the files and folders on the card. When I attempt to copy a file over to the SD card, the transaction looks as though it completes because the file icon shows up. However, Nautilus suddenly unmounts the card. When I check the file, I find that only half or less has copied over the the SD card.

All of the documentation I've found on setting up a Multiseat configuration in Debian with GNOME is old. How do I set up Multiseat in Debian Unstable with GNOME 3 and GDM 3? Also, I do not have a video card. I have an integrated Intel GPU that supports two monitors. The multi-monitor set up works, but I want to set up Multiseat.

Using 10.04 Netbook version. I am finding on my Asus EEE 901 that sometimes file copy just seems to freeze - seems to happen usually when copying from the built-in SSD memory to the plug-in SDHC memory card. I have tried reformatting the card and using a different card. It is not just this computer since I found the same thing on my last Asus which was the 900 model.
I am told that there are issues with Nautilus. Is there anything which can be done to improve this or is there anything else which I can install besides Nautilus? I am assuming that there is some issue related to Ubuntu's handling of SDHC memory cards.
It is becoming annoying because it seems to work sometimes and then not. When it happens only option seems to be to turn the netbook off and on again. Even if the file copy is cancelled the card seems to be unaccesible until rebooted.
Also after a certain point it seems that when I try and copy new files to the card, they appear to copy ok but obviously are corrupt in some way - when you try to play videos for instance they are faulty.

I know this is usually with the intent of multiseat systems. I am not interested in setting up a multiseat system. What I am interested in configuring on using the console and jumping back to X session, not the other way around. Is this possible if your default desktop environment GNOME and configure GDM to do this with the novtswitch parameter mentioned here? [URL]..
I tried even playing around with Xorg, finding out from the man page Xorg server-1.4.2 it does not even have novtswitch functionality compiled X does, but I am not sure I am configured it properly, specifically because I am not doing multiseat. Does anyone have background on this to give me some guidance? I have attached the relevant conf files and logs. Let me know if more is needed. In my test environment, it switches VT anyway and the keyboard does not work. I assume my Xorg binary is not compat for this, but am I even on the right track? I did not expect the kb to go out like it did.

I am trying to make multiseat work on my system. (By which I mean I have two keyboards, mice, and monitors, that will act like two separate workstations.Hardware-wise I have a GeForce 210, which has multiple monitor outputs. Keyboards are one PS/2, one USB, mice are both USB. My distro is Kubuntu 10.04.I have dual screens with a single user working fine, but nothing I've tried for multiseat has worked.https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiseatX - first seat works fine, nothing on second seat
Xephyr, as discussed here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=620003 - I can't make KDE start in the Xephyr window, it gives dbus errors, and in any case I'm not sure how to get the keyboards and mice set correctly

Just did an install and am loving Debian. I am having troubles with my card causing mini-freezes. I type and the input sometimes(every 30 seconds) stops and then catches up. This is really annoying. I figure it is the wireless driver because when I ran top -d 0.1 Ieee80211/1 or Ieee80211/0 was the main verdict during every stall. I have not had this problem with other distros, but came to Debian for stability. Any ideas on how to fix it?

This is a strange problem. I have Ubuntu server installed on a proper server hardware. My RAID card reports all four HDDs to ubuntu as single drives, which is how i set it up because Ubuntu does not recognize the raid card on the server. Now you might say if thats the case, why dont i remove the raid card and have the BIOS report to ubuntu as four single drives then i can perhaps setup software raid. Well my board has only one sata port.Ubuntu is all setup. on the first drive and i have set the other three up using software RAID.
System works great only problem is it freezes sometimes. Not everytime, just on the odd occassion I use the same Hardware without the raid card and of course just one HDD and it great. No freezes. That leads me to believe its the RAID card.My question is why will it run great for days and sometimes just freeze on me? Probably silly but if theres an issue with the RAID card, it should not work at all, should it?

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.
i know no linux is or opsys is perfect. im just looking for one that is stable and works the pc correctly. i know its a big thing to ask. i know no one can tell me that. but just looking for suggestions. im thinking of downloading suse and does all the downloads support live sessions.

I want to remap a single key on my keyboard. This is the key which will delete or in numpad mode will put a '.' or a ',' in my case.I want the ',' to be a '.' .So I found out that xev gives me some information about the keys.So I tried something likexmodmap -e 'keycode 91 = period'Which is not what I want. Because than the delete command gets overwritten instead of the comma. So I triedxmodmap -e 'keysym 0x0 = period'Which looked like a endless loop to me. 0x0 is also quite strange, isn't it? But this is what xev gave me for numlock activated and the comma-key.The difference between the delete and the comma is the "state".Xev returns for delete:
Code:
KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4800001,
root 0x10c, subw 0x0, time 1934052, (412,580), root:(416,605),

No idea why this happens but on a couple of systems I'm unable to boot into single user, either as runlevel S or runlevel 1. This is true for the Failsafe image and the regular system image alike.
The major symptom is that it seems the initrd image is started and then the system hangs when it tries to transfer control to the inittab.
I am able to boot into the system with runlevel 2 or higher. I am also able to boot into the single-user rescue DVD image.
how to add the rescue DVD boot image to my secondary IDE drive so that I have a guaranteed way into the system?
