OpenSUSE Network :: Updating A Lexmarkprinter Firmware Over TCP/IP?

Jun 3, 2011

I try to update a Lexmark C543dn Color laser printer as of indications in the doc of Lexmark which go:On the computer attached to a network, put in the IP address. then you should come to the menu.

I do not have a network. I would like to know if it is feasible and if how to do the following.Take the laptop, branch laptop and printer of an ethernet cable. Use the laptop to do the network with the printer, and then access the http menu of the printer. I do not have a router, I do not have the possibility to buy or borrow it. Either there is a possibility to do it straight away in this fashion or I cannot update the firmware (at least in Windows).

OpenSUSE Network :: Error On Updating / Installing Software - Connection Failed

Oct 21, 2010

I had this issue with Fedora Core 13, so I switched my laptop back to OpenSuse and continued to have the problem. I can do a host lookup for software.opensuse.com and I get a correct response ...
Code:
linux-edxs:/etc # host software.opensuse.org
software.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.150
linux-edxs:/etc # host download.opensuse.org
download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134

Firefox works. Thunderbird finds my mail servers just fine. SSH works. But then when I try to do anything involving software updates or installation, I get ...
Code:
linux-edxs:/etc # zypper update
Retrieving repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.3 11.3-1.82' metadata []
Download (curl) error for '[URL]':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

I've seen others here post queries about this, and I'll tell you what it was in my case: our DSL modem's DHCP server returns its own IPV4 address as the DNS server. When I looked at /etc/resolve.conf, I saw "nameserver: 192.168.50.254" on the last line -- the IPV4 address of our DSL modem. I manually inserted "nameserver" lines for our ISP's two actual DNS servers, and everything magically started working. Why this should confuse some software under Linux, but not other software, is a mystery. It also seems to be Gnome-specific (I didn't have this problem with OpenSuse 11.3 and KDE 4).

Ask if they're using Gnome, and ask them to check resolve.conf. A lot of DSL modems and home/small office routers return their own IP address (i.e., the same as the gateway address) for the DNS server on a DHCP query. The solution is to manually edit resolve.conf and put in your ISP's DNS server addresses manually. Incidentally, just my opinion, but Network Manager needs to make this an option. Under Windows, for example, you can select "automatically assign DNS" or you can enter them manually, even if you're using DHCP. It'd be nice if Network Manager permitted that.

Ubuntu :: Windows Driver Firmware - Error "Wireless Connection (Firmware Missing)"

Jun 4, 2011

after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"

I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.

OpenSUSE :: Using Wine To Update Sony NEX Camera Firmware

Oct 3, 2010

Sony currently only supplies its NEX cameras with .exe binary firmware updates. Prior to purchasing the camera, I installed Wine and was able to execute the .exe. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it'll work. Now, with the camera in hand, I actually tried to update the firmware. It didn't work. I tried using Wine 1.1.28 and 1.3.3 and even the cloned the Wine repository with git and compiling Wine with USB patches I found here: [URL] (Wine git, compile and install found here: USB - The Official Wine Wiki)

With the camera connected, I was able to use "wineconsole cmd" to open a dos shell. In the shell, I was able to see that the D: drive (which I assigned to /media/disk) was correctly accessing the camera as a mass storage device. I can only conclude that USB support works. However, it doesn't appear to work for updating the firmware. The firmware program from Sony searches for about a minute and doesn't find the camera. When I run the firmware updater with Wine, Wine produces these files:

[Code]....

The .dat file looks most likely to be the data I want to dump to the camera, but how? (I've done some research and have read that the data is probably encrypted.)

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 64-bit Version On A Macbook Pro (5,4 Firmware 1.8)?

Aug 13, 2010

I am trying to install OpenSuse 11.3 64-bit version on a Macbook Pro (5,4 firmware 1.8). The laptop will only run Linux and no OSX so I want to use the entire disk for OpenSuse. With that in mind, during install I switch to expert mode:

1. Delete all partitions
2. Create a new "msdos" partition table
3. Create sda1 as ext4, format and mount "/" on it
4. Create sda2 and assign it as swap partition
5. Continue the remaining install as normal.

After reboot, grub loads up but boot hangs at:

Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

For context, I have tried Fedora and Ubuntu on this laptop and both hang at "Uncompression Error -- System halted" error. I ran memtest on the laptop and all LiveCDs run fine on it so that rules out hardware issues. My guess is that with Fedora and Ubuntu, both use grub2 and there is some complication with grub2. CentOS and OpenSuse seem to use grub and that gets me as far as loading the kernel but then boot hangs after initrd loading at the error above.

Hardware :: Network Shared HDD Freezes While Updating Some Backups

Jan 3, 2010

I have a 1TB Samsung hard disk placed inside of one of those boxes that transform internal SATA hard disks into an external USB disk. The disk is plugged via USB cable to my home server which runs Debian 5.0.3 and linux kernel 2.6.26-2-686. This disk is used to save some backups and files that we need to access often on different computers of the local network (using WinSCP). Today, something weird is happening. While updating some backups from one Windows Vista box with WinSCP, the connection to the server is lost and all the directories on the disk disappear. The disk kind of freezes.

Checking on system log, I find this:
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_frozen_data
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_committed_data
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_frozen_data
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_frozen_data
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_frozen_data
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_frozen_data
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 122061314
Jan 3 15:20:06 BOX4 kernel: [675850.568009] lost page write due to I/O error on sda1

The disk is not one of those old hard disks, I bought it less than a year ago. I tried to run some diagnostic tools like SMART but self test features and logging is not supported (maybe because it's USB). The disk inside the external box is a SAMSUNG HD103SI. I don't know what to do and we really need this up and running. Also, obviously I mounted it again and tried to perform the SSH backup once again, but it failed again. Another fact that I would like to refer is that I have a second 1TB SAMSUNG HD154UI hard disk which is only used to store movies and music, and is up and running without any problems, so I wouldn't say it's controllers problem.. ! What should I do now?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sony Motion Eye Webcam - Firmware Loading

Jul 9, 2010

Well, after searching several forums and trial and error, I finally got my builtin webcam to work. Its r5u870 05ca:1836. The only problem I now have is that after a hard boot (system was powered down), I then have to do a soft boot for this to work properly. It seems to me that the problem is the firmware loading. Obviously, doing a shutdown -r means that the firmware remains in the webcam device and then everything seems OK.

After a soft boot:
linus:~/bin # lsmod|grep -e sony -e uvc -e r5u
r5u870 26436 0

A window manager is available

/dev/video0 does not support read i/o .....

After a hard boot, luvcview will not display anything after the line beginning with

How to make this all work without the soft reboot?
