OpenSUSE Network :: Etherape Crashes On 11.4 With Portmapper

Jun 13, 2011

etherape crashes on 11.4 while monitoring an interface on which services using the portmapper are running. It's fine with icmp, www and smb. As soon as I issue rpcinfo -p <host> from another machine or try to mount nfs3 or nfs4 shared, etherape crashes on the server . Did you experience similar issues?It occurs on the 2 64bit and 1 32bit machines running openSUSE 11.4. No problem at all under 11.3.

OpenSUSE Network :: Headless System Almost Crashes

Jul 13, 2010

I have a big problem with my home router / server. The symptom is an alomst complete death. The other computers in the house can use the internet, i.e., the PC is not completely dead, but actually routes. However, it suspends all direct traffic: SSH becomes irresponsive, SMB shares disappear, and so on. It cuts traffic even with a VMWare guest it runs. I can ping it, but that's about it.The worrying thing is that it starts slowly. In the beginning it will start by cutting SMB pipes. It will then become very slow, to the point it won't execute a "shutdown" command.Then I sometimes have flood on port X, "sending cookies". That is certainly due to the P2P program, but cold a sustained flood affect communications on the virtual network adapter vmnet8?And then it enters this catatonic state with no special mention on the log.

OpenSUSE Network :: Firefox 3.6.6 And 11.3 System Crashes

Upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 without any issues. However the newer version of Firefox keeps crashing and bringing down 11.3! It's a complete system crash with absolutely no warning, although it looks like 11.3 is trying to send the TERM signal before the pc shuts down.I have other browsers for my work, and both Opera and SeaMonkey work perfectly.Konquerer also works perfectly.

OpenSUSE Network :: Writing To Samba Share Causes Crashes After A Few 100 MB?

Jul 22, 2010

If this is the right forum i don't know, but I'm having a problem which crashes my home server when writing to Samba. Googling and a quick search in this forum didn't help me any further. Is there anyone with a clue what to do?When I write several hundreds MB to my Samba share from a Windows machine the machine crashes (both with Win XP and Win 7). The problem is reproducible, although the precise moment (about 1 minute) or amount transfered data varies (about 300 to 800 MB). Small writes go well.Reading about 5 GB from Samba to Windows went without a hitch.

OpenSUSE Network :: KDE 4.5.4 Networkmanager Crashes While Installing Mobile Connection

Dec 20, 2010

I am a long time gentoo-user (~10 years). Just bought this new laptop and don't want to take the time to compile everything. During my search for a nice binary distro, I found the KDE reloaded CD, which I then downloaded. That was because I had a great hassle to find a Distro which supports the latest KDE, I was used by gentoo. Well, I am very impressed: Installation went flawless and the Distro is very up-to-date.

Well, now to one of my problems: I have this mobile internet stick:

Code:
ID 12d1:140c Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

which also gets detected as a modem. So far so good. When I now try to set it up, the KDE networmanager just segfaults badly... This is the output from the error report:

Maybe there is a possibility to set it up command line?

Ubuntu Networking :: Rpcinfo Can't Contact Portmapper

Jan 25, 2010

I've reported this as a bug (#507546), but it occurs to me that maybe others aren't having the same problems, so maybe it's an issue with the configuration of my machine. I upgraded to Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) from Jaunty. Ever since the upgrade, I'm getting a number of weird networking problems (though basic webbrowsing & email work fine):

1. I can't mount an NFS partition, one that has worked on this laptop with every previous version of Kubuntu, and one that still works on other computers. If I do

$ sudo mount /usr/lab

I get

mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.

So then I do this:

$ sudo start statd

and get this:

statd start/running, process 18709

Then this happens again:

$ sudo mount /usr/lab

mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.:

but

$ sudo start statd

start: Job is already running: statd

so then I do this:

$ rpcinfo -p

and it hangs for something pretty close to 3 minutes and then says this:

rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system error - Connection timed out

See also this:

$ ps ax | grep port
18017 ? Ss 0:00 portmap
18878 pts/27 R+ 0:00 grep port

Note that the 3-minute hang with rpcinfo -p also happens if I do not attempt to manually start statd first.

2. Whenever I try to print something from okular, the window freezes for about 3 minutes and then the print dialog comes up. The printers I want (network printers) are not shown in the list.

3. My department uses Retrospect (commercial closed-source software, sorry) for backups, and I haven't been backed up since I upgraded. The problem, again, is that when I try to start the backup client it hangs for about 3 minutes but then fails to come up.

4. And some new information not in my bug report: I've noticed that certain (but not all) OOo Impress presentations cause Impress to freeze for about, you guessed it, 3 minutes before the window opens. I just copied one of the troublesome presentations over to another Kubuntu Karmic machine, and it opens fine there. I believe that machine can also mount NFS partitions without trouble. it smells like some pervasive networking/communications problem specific to the configuration of my own laptop. But, I don't really know where to start. This has never been a problem before, and I don't think my networking setup is extensively tweaked

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Crashes The Network

May 25, 2010

So whenever I turn on my EeePC with Ubuntu 10.04 on it, the network crashes after like 10 minutes to 45 minutes. Every time. Of course I have that horribly <snip> bug where the WPA and even WEP on my laptop are buggy because of 10.04, but it did the same when I was on 9.10 (but like 3-4 times a day instead of many times an hour).

Yeah, so when I connect to the network with my laptop, the network crashes. The wifi still works, I can detect the wireless network on all my computers (my Ubuntu one, Windows 7 and my girlfriend's Mac), but internet does not work. I then have to turn off router/modem, and it starts to work again. Then, a couple of minutes later, if the Ubuntu laptop is on, it stops again.

That's annoying because I can't really use my laptop on the internet because I'll have to restart everything soon. I've tried setting to WPA and to WEP and it happens with both. Same goes if I set my laptop to a manual IP address or an automatic one. I did some tests to be sure, and the network works without crashing for days if my laptop is closed, so the problem really is with Ubuntu, and as I said, it kind of always did that, but it was tolerable before.

Fedora Networking :: Network Manager Crashes After Upgrade (Backtrace)

May 29, 2011

I was running F15 for a month now. After this week's updates NetworkManager crashes at startup and throws a backtrace. During reading ifcfg-<wifi network name> it was throwing some assert() failed of some hash is not null, but just as a warning. Later it was dying while reading ifcfg-eth0.

I removed all the ifcfg-* files in /etc/NetworkManager and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
Then NetworkManager started but at the moment I used the gnome applet to connect to a network it crashed trowing a backtrace (I have no debuginfo installed).

Then I also deleted ifcfg-* in /etc/sysconfig/network/profiles/default and /etc/sysconfig/network/devices, now the NetworkManager does not crash anymore, but instead gnome applet crashes when I try to connect to a network. grrr...

As a result I am still unable to connect to any network. Why so many copies (hardlinks?) to these config scripts? Now it is even worse: I rebooted the system and at the boot time when NetworkManager starts the boot process freezes. It says in VPN the Get() method is not implemented. I am unable event to switch a console and to log in to put the config files back (getty not started?).
