General :: Windows To Remote Desktop?

May 10, 2011

I'd like to remote into my Linux (Ubuntu) desktop from a Windows desktop. Of course there is VNC, among others. The trick is that I just want to have a remote session without having any local screen sharing. In other words, when I type and move the mouse on the Windows computer, I don't want that activity to show up on the screen remote Linux system. The Linux box should just sit there at the login prompt or whatever it was doing prior to my remote login.

Software :: Remote Desktop And Multiple Desktop Windows

Dec 14, 2009

I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.

Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

Ubuntu :: D Key (alone) Shows Desktop Over Xrdp?

Oct 13, 2010

While connecting over Xrdp, hitting the "D" key alone hides all my windows and shows the desktop. This is problematic since I often wish to type words containing at least one "D" in it. In case anyone else is having this problem, I've wrestled through it and offer this help.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat and connecting via Xrdp. I only have this problem when connecting remotely.

APPARENT CAUSEI don't pretend to know for sure, but the problem appears to be that the remote connection is flubbing Metacity's "<Super>d" binding for the "show desktop" command. More precisely, the string "<Super>" doesn't appear to be functioning for me. If I change <Super> to <Ctrl>, I can use Ctrl + D to show desktop, and I can then type the letter D without it hiding every window from me.

Further evidence <Super> isn't working for me, if I change Metacity's "panel_run_dialog" global key binding from "<Alt>F2" to "<Super>F2" I bring up the run dialog by hitting F2 alone.

WORKAROUNDChange the system's "show desktop" keystroke. Here are the steps.

1) Alt+F2
2) gconf-editor
3) /->app->metacity->global_keybindings
4) Change the assigned keystroke for show_desktop from "<Super>d" to "<Ctrl>d" or "<Ctrl><Alt>d" or "disabled"

If someone finds this worthy of submitting a bug ticket, please let me know so I can follow it.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop / X Windows / Low Graphics

Sep 26, 2010

I'm trying to set up a machine without a monitor. It has a video card in it but it won't have a monitor connected.Basically I want to press the button on the front, it boots up and I can remote desktop onto it from my main machine. I'm assuming this means it needs X.The problem I have is that with no monitor attached, it boots but complains about "low graphics". I only see this complaint after I re-connect the monitor cable. My remote desktop from the other machine works fine until I come to shut it down whereupon it just sits there presumably waiting on the display that's not connected for someone to fix the low graphics "problem."

Is there a way to stop it moaning about low graphics? Or, better yet, have a machine without a video card at all yet still be able to remote desktop onto it? Is there some kind of virtual framebuffer version of X I could use that would allow this?

Software :: Use Windows PC Remote Desktop To Connect To PC?

Jul 5, 2011

I want to setup my linux PC so that I can use windows PC remote desktop to connect to my linux PC. I found a solution from the web that I use xrdp and sesman to connect to the linux PC. Also, the file startwm.sh has to be changed:

x11vnc -display :0 -localhost &
sleep 5
vncviewer localhost:0 -fullscreen

However, I found that it actually shared the desktop between the linux PC and my windows PC. Hence the speed is a bit slow. Are there any other approaches that work similar to windows remote desktop that can kick the current user who logged in (log him out) and only you access the desktop? I believe if it is possible to do that, the speed will be much improved. I am totally new to remote desktop setup and do not know each software how it works. I just followed the procedure step-by-step to set the xrdp and sesman up. Please give me some advice on the above situation.

OpenSUSE Network :: Remote Desktop To SUSE From Windows

Feb 26, 2010

I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!

I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).

My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?

I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.
