I have xinetd starting the VNC server.I'd like to leave the system at runlevel 3.Before xinetd starts Xvnc I want it to execute telinit 5.When there are no connections to the VNC port, it should drop back to runlevel 3.Is this possible? Would xinetd point to a script instead of the Xvnc binary? How would I switch to runlevel 3 once all connections dropped?
View 2 RepliesI'm setting up my CentOS server and I'm having issue with the VNC server. I've set up xinetd services for connections all of which work individually bringing me to a login window. But only one will work at a time. If I kill the process or if I click the disconnect button I can make a new one but as they are terminal sessions (using wait) I wanted to be able to leave one logged in and have the option of another connection if I wanted to log on a different user.
Can someone help with the setting which would be to allow more than one connection? I know if you setup permanent session paths in vncserver this should work but (and I'm sure this has worked for me in the past) the xinetd method is supposed to open up sessions as required. I am working from a write-up for doing this in Ubuntu and aside from odd path differences the only noticeable change is the guide uses vnc4server rather than vncserver that comes pre-installed on CentOS. Should that matter?
I am running 11.3 with Remote Admin(VNC) turned on. This has installed TightVNC.I also have also enabled xinetd to manage the startup of new (incoming) VNC requests.All this is working just fine. So, what's the problem, you ask? Its that missing Shift+3 symbol. To reproduce, I run TightVNC (viewer) from a variety of clients (Win & OpenSUSE) to a number of OpenSUSE servers with xinetd managed VNC services enabled. The Xvnc sessions start and the clients display the KDE log-on screen. You will notice that in the username field that the sign is not displayed.
I have run a parallel VNC service (is it Xvnc or vncserver?) which gave me a twm session. I have installed bootpd-dd2 and enabled and configured it with xinetd. 1. Made sure that their is a bootptab file and it is configured. 2. Tested the bootpd is working by runing the command /usr/sbin/bootptest cmdbfs .3. tail -f the /var/log/messages and saw the requests from the test.4. rebooted a machine that is configured to pxe boot.there is no messages by bootpd when a request is made.request is picked up by network monitor on a seperate computer on the proper udp port
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed open suse 11.2 on my hp hdx18 laptop replacing windows 7. trying to use my phone as a bluetooth access point so i can connect to the internet when im out and about and there isnt a bt openzone network around. my phone is a sony ericsson w910i. i can connect to my phone via blue tooth and use it as a remote control and browse, send and receive files. but cant figure out how to use it as an access point to the internet. win7 had an option to connect via access point giving me instant internet access over the vodafone mobile phone network, but i cant find an option like that in open suse, if there even is one.

As far as I can tell it is connecting but not getting an IP address via DHCP. when running ifup it says its backgrounding getting an ip address.

I restarted the xinetd service using /sbin/service. however, Subversion does not end up being listed in /etc/xinetd.d nor does it seem to be running and occupying the port altogether.
I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?

CentOS is up to date as of beginning this week. Doing a quick net check suggests HW-problem ( HP DL380 G6), but I've tested both memory and cpu(s) without errors. We also had the same problem on Scientific Linux 5.4.
When I shut down or restart my computer, I can see there are some errors related to failed services (about xinetd, I think, which is NOT enable). But it scroll too fast and I cannot note them. Sorry for the "newbie" question: how can I see the log of what happened ? (dmesg only gives log about kernel, if I'm not wrong.)

I just added 8 additional vncserver sessions(Xvnc) (using a well-documented procedure my predecessor used) to my RH Enterprise 2.4.21-4 (OK it went by fast) server. This brings the number of session listed in my /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file to ~32. Applications and terminals now seem to choose if they will open or not in the Xvnc session and not all sessions start at boot. I can start them manually, and they will work, but then they stop working properly. You can open a session, view the active desktop, click on menus and associated drop-down items to try and open apps, but the apps/terminals just won't open. Is there a limit to the number Xvnc Sessions that can be managed? If so, what is it? This happens whether I try to connect from a Winddows box or another Linux box.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a VNC connection running to my Ubuntu 10.04 server [URL]. This was running fine for a day or 2 after that, sometimes it worked and sometimes not. When it didn't work, I could connect with VNC (i got a gray window with the cursor) but no login screen was shown.
After some testing I now know what the root cause is. When I disconnect the screen from my server, I don't get the login screen. When I connect the screen (even if it is not powered) after a reboot, I can see the login screen. Next I was looking for some logging that could indicate some problems. I looked into "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and there I see a difference when I connect/disconnect the screen. When the screen is disconnected, the log says:

I have a desktop machine with two ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1. Etho is connected to the cable modem and that seems to be working fine - well, I'm posting here, right? Eth1 is connected to a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point. I have eth1 set to 192.168.1.240 and the AP set to 192.168.1.245 (the default). The desktop runs CentOS and I have dhcpd running, and I have focused on the dhcpd.conf file, which I have changed many times. Here is the latest incarnation:

I connect to the WPA2-secured wifi of a university. They use 802.11b/g on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n on the 5.2 GHz band. Both have the same SSID xyz (for roaming).Now, when I connect to the SSID xyz, ubuntu 11.04 (natty) chooses the Access Point with the highest Strength. However, this is a 802.11g Access Point which is very slow because of high usage and there is no 802.11n available. Slow pings make it unusable.network-manager is just too stupid to connect to the much faster 5GHz 802.11n AP.Windows 7 autmatically connects to the 5GHz 802.11n Adapter with 300Mbit/s. That's what I would expect from ubuntu as well. I think Mac OS X also performs great in such situations.
The only workaround for me is to enter the BSSID (Mac-Address) of the 5 GHz AP directly in network-manager. That works and I have 802.11n with up to 300 Mbit/s. However, this is not the perfect solution, because now I can't use roaming any more (we have lots of APs here!).Do you have any Ideas to prefer 5 GHz band over 2,4 GHz band? I also tried the "band" gconf option as well as kernel module options of module iwlagn with no success.
This one has been driving me nuts for some days now:My Gentoo box which is acting as an internet gateway has two point-to-point interfaces, ppp0 (PPPoE to my ISP) and ppp1 (PPTP VPN link to IPREDator). Packets from my local network are just routed through ppp0 and now the fun part starts: I want to MARK (netfilter...) all packets originating from one specific user on that box in order to use another routing table that will contain a default route via the ppp1 interface.Marking seems to work fine as does the second routing table. View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is any way to SSH from one computer to another and completely bypass a router or any other network infrastructure. The reason I ask is because my robot ( same one in this post ) often needs to change which wireless network it automatically connects to, however it is getting annoying to have to drag out a monitor and plug it in along with a keyboard and mouse every time this needs to happen. Instead I'd much rather just plug my laptop into the other computer, SSH in and change the network myself.
So I thought I would ask you kind people if this is possible. The robot's computer has unused ethernet and USB ports, and I'd like to use those if at all possible (and with linux, anything is possible! -- sorta). I thought about doing something with ad-hoc, but this would limit my range (in infrastructure mode I can control the thing anywhere there is internet), and is to be avoided.

My problem is, that several applications (eg. a cd cataloguer) expecting to find the cd at /media/cdrom0, or something similar. Is it possible to fix it? how to get openSUSE 11.2 to automount a USB drive (Creative Zen to be precise) to a static mount point? At the moment KDE is filling up my media folder with disc-x folders and the podcatching software keeps picking the wrong one to sync to. It's not my PC so command-line mounting is out of the question.
