The icon also changed from staircase-bar to staircase-bar with forelock. Oh yeah I'm using GNOME desktop.However when right-clicking on it and choose Connection Information I can only found tab for the wireless connection. I installed MRTG some hours ago. Everything works fine (disk, cpu,..), except the network graph.
For this graph, it's only work for ~3 cycles (15min), then... nothing.

In attachement is the graph for the memory (working!) and .. for the network, as you can see, only one small pic at the beginning.
I need information about the capabilities and state of the disk...specifically, if it's rewritable (capability) and if it's currently blank (state). Currently, I'm using the output of hal-device to give me that information. The problem is, hald doesn't update the information in response to a burn event... this is a problem, because if a burn a blank disc, hal-device still lists it as blank...and if I blank a disk, hal still lists it as non-blank.
Is there a method to force HAL to update a device, or is there a way to query the disk/drive directly to find out if the disk is blank and rewritable? Or even a method to determine if a disk is blank or not? Additionally, this is for a CD-burning application... so I'm intentionally trying to avoid anything hacky like ejecting the CD and reinserting it... anything of that nature.

According to my application I need to find out the information of the disk. How can I get disk information when my system is RAID enabled(cat /proc/partitions shows the entry of the controllers in example 1). Can we get Partitions information of the Disk when Disk are connected to system by controller?
I am trying to get my head around my new server. I am using CENTOS 5.4 x86_64 with 300GB harddrive.
The 300 GB been partitioned with the following:

I have increased teh tmpDSK as it was getting full very quickly. My question is, what are these md0; md1, md2 and md3 are they harddrive partitions and as md1 is getting full will that have an impact on my sites.
I have a favor to ask, I've been having a really hard time trying to understand how snmp traps work, what can they do for you, and why they are useful. I've done some research and I've even set up snmp clients on linux systems, not necessarily the traps. I know they communicate on port 161 and 162 and I also know that you set them up to connect to a community string. Still I cant grasp the concept. If you don't mind can any one break it down for me, in very basic terms.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI managed to kill KNetworkManager today and I'm not sure what I did. This is a netbook running openSUSE 11.4 with all updates applied and KDE 3.5 (from the openSUSE repository). Normally, I use knetworkmanager to connect to the Internet. Everything was working fine this morning and today I decided to apply whole disk encryption (using cryptsetup and luks) to it.
So, I backed up the files, encrypted the partitions, made some adjustments to /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, and copied the files back. Everything is working fine, except for knetworkmanager. When it goes to connect, it starts off with the "gray Earth" (to represent no connection) and then it switches to the "connecting" icon for a fraction of a second, and then it's back to the "gray Earth". Looking at the output of iwconfig, it hasn't connected to the router at all (the essid is blank).
The connection works fine using ifup. I tried using cnetworkmanager (the console version) and it spits out errors like this:

can some one explain why opensuse 11.2 try to scan the default gw via snmp? And why it generates wrong packages with other mac-addresses? we have 3 scan tries with the same IP (from the fresh install) but with 3 different mac addresses. View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to write a script to report useful information on disk utilization for each user's home directory.For each directory I need to show: 1. the long listing of that directory entry (but not the files in the directory), so that I can see the rights and owners of the directory.2. The amount of disk used by that directory, in human-readable format, including subdirectories. I need to have two lines for each user one after the other. For example:
/home/user1 directory info
/home/user1 disk usage
/home/user2 directory info
/home/user2 disk usage
The script will assume that all users, except user root, have their home directories in the /home directory (no need to do anything with the /etc/passwd file). And if the administrator adds or removes users, the script should still work correctly (so the script shows the information for all current users).
Here's what I do know. The command "ls -ld /home/user's_name" will give me the info I need for #1. And the command "du -hs" will give me the info I need for #2. What I don't know is how to grab each individual directory in order to apply the above commands to each of them in order. ???
I have a hardisk shared on my windows machine. And I would like to be able to access this on my opensuse notebook. Just cant figure it out. Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.

I'm asking because I have two wireless networks nearby: my personal network and my school's network. I tried one time to connect to the school's network using the standard prompts but none of them worked - however I could connect to my personal network just fine. The problem is that Ubuntu remembered the incorrect information I entered for my school's network and keeps trying to connect to it.
It's annoying because whenever I'm in range of both networks I keep having to manually tell it to stop connecting to my school's network and to connect to my personal one instead.
How do you setup Secondary or Slave Servers in NIS? Will the domain of the slave server be the same as the Master Server?

I can print and scan without any problem, very nice and fast device. I did some research where the information where the device port is stored in sane, but cannot find anything. I tried to remove my old network device port for my Brother scanner, but did not find the config file where this information is stored. Neither /etc/sane.d/* nor ~/.sane/xsane/* contains this information.

In the process i began to look for relevant network information about my computer and realized that ifconfig wasn't displaying the same information that resides in my /etc/network/interfaces file. On the interfaces file my IP address is 192.168.1.109 for interface eth0 but ifconfig displays 192.168.1.101. I was under the impression that ifconfig got its information from the interfaces file but clearly doesn't. I tried re configuring the device with ifconfig and then disabling and re enabling the device with ifdown and ifup so that the device updated its information but it didn't.

I have a question regarding the configuration of Network Connection. My wired connection is fine right now and when I check the network connection applet, it display active information of eth0. However, when I click the Configure button, the Network Connection window appears but there's nothing in the Wired panel. Should there be a eth0 in that panel? I remember I had one before, but after I messed with some configuration of VPN, my network became unstable and I remove the Network Manager to try to solve the problem. Since then, there's nothing in my Network Connection window, though I can still connect to my router with eth0. Now even after I reinstalled the Network Manager, I still don't get anything.

Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom
