I created a VMware Workstation VM with OpenSUSE 11.2. When I copy the VM to a new location the network configuration disappears. If I go into the networking control panel and save, the interface names are changed. Originally had 2 nics as "eth0" and "eth1", copy the vm, configure network and the interfaces are now "eth2" and "eth3". How do I get back to my original configuration?

Some people advise me to upgrade the kernel. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a debian box, a.ces.school.edu, in my lab and my laptop also runs debian (on another DHCP lan home network outside school). I can access my lab's debian computer from outside school only by first ssh-ing to a server setup by the school - access.ces.school.edu, and then, from the server ssh-ing to my lab computer. That works fine and I can view all my files on my lab computer from home.
But, I would like to copy some files from my lab computer to my home computer. With scp, I know how to do that if I could connect directly with my school computer. In the present scenario, I can't figure out how to copy files.
Does anyone know how this can be done?
I just installed SUSE in a VMware to test it out. A problem i've had with VMware before was getting the wireless to work. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to get the wireless to work over the VMware and in SUSE. I know this may not particularly be a SUSE question but all I saw in the VMware forums was one response that said it was not possible.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed (n this 11.2 system) vmware server (v 2.02), to have access to a few small systems. One of them is a 11.1 guest which I just upgraded to 11.3, successfully (almost).
I have a problem, though: from the host I can not ping/ssh the guest.
Guest to host works fine (including names).

The firewall is down on both sides. I don't see anything with iptraf in the guest. The IP addres of the guest is correct, unless I'm too tired to see.

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

On Linux Mint (Gnome) i used to go to Network drive. that is on the right hand side of Nautilus there is a short cut for Network. in there i could see my network hard drive and other laptops connected to the network, and i could access my files. but on OpenSuse, when i open the network folder, nothing comes up. may be it needs some sort of configuration.

We have this working with RDesktop, but we would like to load balance the connections to our Citrix servers, which I don't believe you can do with RDesktop as it points to a single Windows server.

I have installed VMWare on my laptop. Host operating system - Opensuse 11
Two virtual machines - Both of them have Opensuse 11 as Guest Operating System.
When I start both virtual machines I get the following message.
"Message from <local host name> : The network bridge on device vmnet0 is not running. The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Virtual device Ethernet0 will start disconnected"
I cannot ping to another Virtual machine from one virtual machine. I get "Host Unreachable" message.
I've been working on getting NoMachine and FreeNX working together ... and they're both working well, listening on different ports (guess I should write a howto). At some point I decided to write an init script to control FreeNX behaviour (start, stop, status, setup), since the Ubuntu version has one (called freenx-server) and openSUSE doesn't, but I noticed that it was not necessary, as FreeNX got started automatically... but how ? I could not find any init.d script or command which would start the FreeNX server. Indeed it wasn't actually running :

Just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and I have to say it feels great.Only gripe I currently have is the NetworkManager that is starting up very slowly. When I have logged into KDE KNetworkManager applet says that NetworkManager is not running and hence I have no network connection. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a little bit of a problem, I run openSUSE as a server on a Dell PowerEdge T610. I use it for sharing files in a local network and as a web server accessible through the public IP (configured through router DMZ). Also, I use Teamviewer for remote control in order to avoid some compatibility and network problems. Generally the computer runs flawless but from time to time, as about once in two weeks, all network related services except the Apache server which runs just fine, and is still accesible, crash. The Samba share can't be accessed anymore, the Teamviewer is also dead and the only way to put everything back in order is a restart. The thing is I don't know if an error occurs since the server hasn't got a monitor installed, and more than that I do most of my work remotely (as in miles and miles away from the location) and it takes me quite some time to actually get there and see what's happening.
So, any ideas what might be happening? I belive that there might be some information in some of the logs, but as I am not an expert in Unix like operating systems I don't exactly know where to start from.

The network card activity (computer copying the files) would be dormant for 30 second to a minute and then flash rapidly for just 5 second or so. This repeated for the duration of the copying progress (approx 2 hours at a supposedly constant 5-7MB/s).
The share that I was copying to was via SSH using "connect to server" from the GNOME menu. I was expecting the see the network card activity light constantly flash. I wondered if someone could explain this strange behaviour that I have witnessed.
Earlier I have no problems when I install opensuse. After installation the network runs and I can run online updating in yast for the system. But since a few version it doesn't work after installation and I don't know why. I think maybe the errors could happen because I have no
internet connection. Today I install 11.4 and get this message when I want to run online updates in yast.

I am trying to copy a file from a network resource on my Local Area Network, which is about 4.5 GB. I copy this file through GNOME copying utilities by first going to Places --> Network and then selecting the Windows Share on another computer on my network. I open it and start copying the file to my FAT32 drive by Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. It copies well up-to 4 GB and then it hangs.
After trying it almost half a dozen times I got really annoyed and left it hung and went to bed. Next morning when I checked a message box saying "file too large to write" has appeared.
I am very annoyed. I desperately need that file. It's an ISO image and it is not damaged at all, it copies well to any windows system. Also, I have sufficient space on the drive in which I am trying to copy that file.
The problem is i have to copy folders from network into the RHEL server. When i am copying i can copy the folders and documents which do not have a sub folder. But the folders with subfolders is not getting copied. How should i do it?

Hi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?
I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.
When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable
It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.
I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"
