I have two Suse un-firewalled computers connected via NFS. About a year ago I found instructions for a very SIMPLE way to share a CUPS connected printer using Yast. When I installed 11.4 I lost the instructions. It required no config file editing and took about two minutes. Google searches focus on complicated SMB-Linux connections like those suggested by swerdna.
I'm trying to add my Samsung SCX4500W printer to my opensuse 11.2 machine running KDE.From Yast->Printer->Add printerI am able to set the printer up, however there is no driver for my specific network printer. Samsung does provide a linux driver but I have no idea what I'm doing when installing peripherals on linux basically
Having made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems. One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results. Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.
i have a printer which is shared across the network. All the computers have ubuntu installed. I want that some computers should not be allowed to use this printer.
I know that this is easy, but I am confused.I have three computers all with a clean install of SUSE 11.2. Two of them use wifi with the internet and the third is wired.I would like to share files between them all of them. When I go to dolphin/network there is nothing there and I don't know how to set it up.
I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'
I'm going to setup a File and Printer Sharing in my little home network... 3 Computers actively connected to the Web through a single ADSL2+ Wireless Router (number of Computers will increase later) At the moment 2 of the computers are running Fedora 10 and 1 running Windows XP...
Now i want to setup the 3 machines to use 1 printer which is connected to one of the Fedora 10 machines, and i want File Sharing to be enabled so each machine can easily view each others shared files and also be able to print when ever needed (ofcourse the machine with the printer will have to be on for the printing process to happen) I've installed Samaba on each Fedora Machine, enabled sharing but i dont seem to be able to view the Windows machine or each other....
i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
I want to learn how to build a Linux network from scratch that includes file and printer sharing, intranet. I have an intermediate-level knowledge of Windows networking. Can anyone suggest a book or online tutorial that I can learn from? Now let me be clear: I am finding no shortage of tutorials on the web. However, too many are old or incomplete.
A little extra info: I am a teacher/network admin for a small private school with about 50 student computers (that I wish to become Linux machines in the future) and about 10 staff computers (mostly Windows laptops--I do not expect the staff to convert to Linux as readily), I currently do not have an intranet implemented.
I successfully added/shared a network printer in SUSE 11.3 32 bit, but when I try on the 64 Bit box it didn't work out very well. What ports need to be open ? Is it necessary to open port 631 in YAST->Firewall->Advance- >UDP and IPP ?(TCP 631 already open) What services need to be running? Here is the error log :
[16/Dec/2010:19:25:43 -0500] [cups-polld xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:631] CUPS-Get-Printers failed: Forbidden XXX is my server IP
i'm running suse 11.2 and using a ZTE mf627. thus far i can connect to the internet using usb_switcher/vwdial but i want to share it across a LAN. all the how-to's on connection sharing I've seen use the network manager/network settings, but the device doesn't show up in either
I have an opensuse machine - 11.4, running KDE as my desktop. My wifes computer is a Windows 7 PC.
I have installed SAMBA and have configured it to load at each boot. I have set the domain name to WORKGROUP as this is domain name my wife has on her pc. I have shared the video folder within Dolphin in KDE. I'm uncertain about the meaning of the netbios setting (despite reading Chapter29.Samba) and whether I should adjust this setting. Basically, I'm able to see my wife's computer name within Linux, though within Windows, I'm unable to see my linux network. Is it due to the settings that I currently have on my linux pc. The documentation that I'm reading so far is confusing for me.
I want to know if you can make a share on Samba and if you access the file you need to put a username and password in and can you save that to the server. If you can give me a step by step guide how to do it or give me a link where I can go read up on it.
I have installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on my PC. Want to share my files with Win7 system. So far so good, I can access my files on Linux computer from my Windows PC. My problem starts when I want full access to my files, as you see on image it says directory is Public and Writable but still I can't delete or add files to that directory what did I missed ?
I have two ethernet cards eth0 and eth1:Where the internet is cable is conneted to eth0 I have another system i have connected a cable through eth1 to my second systems network cardnow i am able to access the internet on eth0 i.e.,on my first system ..ow can i share the internet which ius coming from eth0 to another system using eth1
I want to share files between my desktop box and my laptop either by my mains-LAN or by ethernet cable and cannot find anything on the forum to point me in the right direction. There is plenty of information to help with the installation of Apache/LAMP and the like. But is this what I need? Will I need to create logon IDs to the desktop to share files (and even the printer?).
Total Newb here, sorry. I am pseudo-IT at work and have set up a desktop with Debian 5 (accidentally overwrote Windows in the process, but there you go). We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?
Have followed swerdna's guide as in the past and my wife from her win7 computer can see and has read write access to all the shares & can print to the shared printer attached to the Opensuse computer etc. However, when I try to access her Win7 shares from my opensuse computer I am presented with a username / password prompt. Here is my smb.conf
[code]...
have followed swerdna's guide (as mentioned previously) and set 'password protected sharing' to off on the win7 computer.
is it possible to install a netwerk printer, while not connected to the netwerk where the printer is?I installed opensuse on my sisters desktop and I want to install the printer that she and my parents are using at home. Is this possible?De printer is in a windows workgroup and shared. De name of the workgroup is DEROON and the name f the computer the printer is connected to is Nico
Using openSUSE 11.4 and winXP pro sp3I am a complete noob to linux.I went into YAST2 and added a printer--none were found. I used the connection wizard and selected Print Via Print Server Machine>>Windows or Samba.i entered the winxp info
I set up a samba file sharing system but my workgroup asks for a username and password see this-This is the text in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented # version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the # samba-doc package is installed.
I want to print from my linux box to my win7 pc that has a shared printer. I have cups installed and tried to add pritner using samba, but was unsuccesful, gave me an error when trying to add. The guide i followed is: Yet another Linux to Windows printing tip -- Debian Admin The printer model is a dell 2330d laser printer, it is not in cups, so i added the ppd file i got off the dell support site. I am aware that there is a native suse driver, but i want to print to the windows printer. If possible I would like to know how to do this via command line instead of the GUI.
Ok have setup my printer under suse 11.3 just fine and printing perfectly, and have added the printer to a windows 7 client, but had to get the disk to install the windows driver. Is there any way that i can put the windows driver on the linux machine so that when i go to a windows client and want to add the printer, i can just connect to the printer and the windows driver will be installed over the network like it does with windows servers?
The hardware, Printer HP Photosmart C309g-m Search HP Australia - Results - 'c309g-m' ADSL wireless router D-Link DSL-G604T/AU V.B3,D-Link Support Resources latest firmware installed. The problem,After setting up to print using wireless access, printing works fine, there is however no longer any internet access available, wired or wireless ( from PCLOS, Mandriva, openSUSE, win7, or whatever!) To restore internet access requires rebooting the router and turning off the printer (or disabling its networking) similar issues with wired network printing.
Printer is connected via USB to server PC running OpenSUSE 11.1 Client PCs are running 11.1, XP, Vista No problem printing from the Windoze machines
Printing is trouble free with the 11.1 client's firewall disabled, but no printer is available with firewall running.
In hopes of diagnosing the problem I figured I'd open everything I could think of until the printer remained available with the firewall running. Then I planned to start removing exceptions one at a time 'til removing one caused the printer to disappear.
I've gone to Yast>Security and Users>Firewall>Allowed Services>External Zone and tried addingSamba Server NetBIOS server Samba Client Samba Server VNC
