In Network Settings in OpenSuse 11.1 while using "Traditional Method with ifup" I am able to set up a box as a server and connect via http over the net BUT Firefox cannot browse. If I switch to "User Controlled with NetworkManager" I can run Firefox but my server is not contactable. How do I do both?

It eppears to be linked to another thread Probl me de r seau wifi / Network manager in that dhcp needs to be running. (So it may be a 'feature' of RTL819 adaptors) So I've finally worked out that I need to start dhcp first.

How do you mannually set up a network using Yast/ifup? I'm trying to get my wireless running on a Broadcom 1390 WLAN. I've gone through the stickies in the wireless forum (this is my first stab at Linux) and have gotten the drivers installed and the internet working (albeit intermittently) using Knetwork manager. It seems that some folks that have had the same issue did not have problems setting the network up manually with Yast & ifup. I've disabled network manager in Yast, and I went through man ifup. It seems I need a "pre-configured interface," but I don't know how to make that happen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed OpenSuSE 11.3 on an old IBM T20 I had kicking around and I'm using a Proxim Wireless PCMCIA Card (Atheros AR5001X). Since this laptop does not have a DVD drive I installed the system using the Netboot CD and have the SuSE 11.3 ISO on an NFS/SAMBA file server. The issues appeared after the first reboot, the adapter no longer worked. I resorted to using the wired interface to finish the install.
Once the system was up followed the trouble shooting steps outlined in various places and found the ESSID is not being picked up by the ifup scripts. Not sure if it matters but I have ESSID broadcasts turned off on all my WAPs.
The ESSID is in ifcfg-wlan0. To get wireless working I have to manually issue iwconfig wlan0 essid "xxxx"..
Both networkmanager and ifup fail..
I have searched around a bit for a knetwork manager issue I am having on my opensuse 11.2 32 bit install. My wireless card is an 04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) I am currently using the Broadcom wl driver
I am on the Internet with this machine as I am typing using the older "ifup" method. I am having great difficulty connecting to the Internet when I use knetwork manger though. The strange part is when I am connected to my router with knetwork manager, I can log into my Router, but I can not get to any web-page/ping any outside address.

I've had 11.4/KDE working pretty well on dual boot Asus G73SW for a few weeks now. Only issues were the FN-* functions that control keyboard lights and whatnot but no biggie since the essential worked.The last couple of days the update notification was indicating 1,201 updates to be made. Yeah it seemed extreme but I googled around and checked the forums and there was nothing related. I figured I might be missing some packages since I installed from the live KDE CD (still 1202 updates!!!???). So I updated. Big mistake!!!!! Ever since NetworkManager cannot connect to the internet, be it wired or wireless.
Initially it could not even see my home network but it picked it up after I removed the plasmoid from the panel and reinstalled it. However it doesn't respond when I click the network icon and still no connection.I managed to get eth0 working with ifup but not wifi. The last part of network manager log file is quoted below. I can send the whole thing to whoever is interested. I can't make sense of it but maybe someone on the forums can.

View 9 Replies View RelatedTomorrow I decided to dedicate 100% of my disk to opensuse! So I backed up the files from the remaining windows partition, deleted them and expanded the /home partition. Well, I ran into some problems during first boot. I referred to an article at the wiki and fixed it. Although I did some small fixing manually at the fstab file. The system booted! I use KVpnc and openVPN to connect to my desktop at work from my laptop at home. This works fine, I can reach my desktop at the office from my laptop at home. The only problem is that when the Vpn connection is active I cannot use a browser on my laptop. In fact, I cannot connect to anything outside the office Vpn (like mail, chat etc).
I suspected it had something to do with the DNS servers at the office not being reachable from the Vpn so I added my "regular" DNS servers to the /etc/resolve.conf used when the Vpn is active, I added two lines in total on the form "nameserver <ip-address>". This did not solve the problem. I have searched the KVpn forums without finding anything, and the same goes for the openSUSE forums. Does anybody else experience the same problem?
I have a fresh install of Fedora 13 on my Toshiba Notebook. I am able to connect to the internet but can not browse neither by Ethernet or wireless. I have an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG wireless card and a Marvell Technology Group LTD 88E8036 PCI-E fast Ethernet card installed. The command ifconfig shows an ip address. I am able to ping by URL and IP address. It does the same with the firewall disabled. I have also disabled the iptable & ip6tables in the services. I have even set fire fox not to use proxy settings. I am just not able to browse at all.

So given that I wanted to set up a home server/media center, I tried win server, but given research had told me that it is easier to accomplish all the features I wanted with Linux I decided the time had come to really see what I'd been missing out on. So what I am looking to accomplish is a full lamp stack, xbmc, samba, mail server, VMWare server, rtorrent, ftp, an probably a few others I have forgot because I can't get to my check list right now. Settled on ubuntu 10.10, had installed it a couple of times while it was still in beta, just to get a feel for it and get everything working so that when it was released I could do a fresh install knowing how to configure everything.
So on Sunday the time came. Everything was going fine until last night, I was installing roundtable webmail and all I came to download something and FireFox can't display any web pages, postfix can't deliver mail. The server can ping local machines but not google.com or another internet site, I can ssh into it an get a remote desktop session via various methods, both either over the local network, or internet. The website is getting served both locally or internet. I just cant seem to make any outbound connections to the outside world.
I have openSUSE 11.2 64-bit KDE, I have installed it with lan cable connected, install updates and than switch to wireless.Everything worked great until I went to my girlfreind with laptop, there I can connect to router, use Skype but can't browse pages with firefox, can't install packages with YAST Also wired connection gives the same result but her PC have no problem with Internet.I have traied ifup, deleting /etc/resolv/conf, disabling NetworManager routing options with no succes

I'm not able to connect to my university's internet facilities under openSUSE 11.4. I have been able to connect in the past and I am still able to connect in Windows 7.When I try to connect to the university WiFi, a valid IP address is assigned to me and the gateway address appears to be correct, so I don't see a problem in the DHCP negotations. Same with my university's Ethernet: I get a valid IP address, but I can't connect to the internet.When I browse to any site with Chromium/Chrome/ Firefox/lynx/curl, the page is stuck at "Sending request". I have tried disabling my firewall - that didn't solve anything.I don't know what else I can try and the campus' network administrators are puzzled. How can I resolve my issue?

The problem is using Yast2 I don't have the option of using the proxy that way it wants http. I've been using opensuse on and off since 9 (great flavor BTW my favorite) Easy as you need it to be and just as complicated as you want it to be, a perfect mix.

How can I block HTTP requests from other computers?
Problems with launching data files of the nas and saving to them is a kde problem. The dot desktop files have to contain access rights for smb/http etc and even when given these it still will not work. I have mainly concentrated on getting the VLC video player to work as it is capable of playing from just about any source, comes with codecs etc etc. Amazing package really.
Pure K apps such as kwrite at least work fine. I tried setting up samba but to no avail.
As dropping a file into VLC's focus didn't do anything I created a vlc desktop icon and dragged the nas file onto that. It plays and a kde error message pops up from plasma shell - can't find file!
I enable kde automount. The content of that when it starts is disturbing. It shows my system disks a detachable and not attached! No need to worry though. I selected mount on log in and attachment where the server was shown. VLC still wouldn't work.
Next I enable NFS file transfers on the NAS. This has allowed me to use open with directly onto an avi file on the nas. I can also click launch them. Remaining problem is opening files on the nas from within VLC. Up pops the kde message "you can only select local files". The file manager here seems to be an instance of dolphin. This suggest that there is going to be a problem saving files to the nas as well. Looks to be the case. VLC can convert formats and all sorts of things. If I select a file locally and try and convert it and save to the nas up pops the "you can only select local files" as soon as I select ok having set the path and file name.
Strange thing is that working transfers seem to be using CIF even though it took an NFS enable to get it partly working via KDE's automount. Dolphin only allows a CIF set up which has a distinct advantage as a direct ip address can be entered. The automount has introduced a very very long delay before kde is up and running following a log in. Samba is even worse in this respect and both seem to lack a method of direct ip input which means they have to find the server.
One other aspect. As far as NFS is concerned from a very recent post elsewhere nautilus works. Pass on CIF. And of course it's all instantaneous and ok on windows even on vista. Enabling the TV protocol on the nas has confused Vista as it only wants to connect like that and needs drivers. Might also be down to having NFS enabled though. MS might not like that.
I have filed all of this on bugzilla if anyone would like to vote - bug number 695648. Seems to me that the CIFs route should be the default for ease with many users on home networks. I'm also sure that the problem is basically KDE preventing aps from accessing the nas.
I have my ubuntu box hard wired into my network. It all works fine, until I reboot my ubuntu box. After reboot, it can no longer see the network. I have it set up with a static ip. Not sure that I set it up completely correctly but it works fine...when working.. To fix the problem, I enter terminal: ifup eth0 That fixes all know problems until next reboot. What do I need to do so that it will remember settings and automatically be hooked into the network at power up?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a normal user (sites:users) and the usual http user (wwwrun:www).I'm hosting several sites and I want to be able to upload stuff via ftp, so I'm using the "sites" home (/home/sites) to keep the sites I'm hosting. Giving read permissions to all inside /home/sites makes it accessible and readable to the wwwrun user. Problems come when I need to upload something. The easy way is to give 777 permissions to the folder that's going to receive the file, but I don't feel comfortable at all with that.
What do you recommend? Is there any group configuration that could help me (like adding "sites" to the "www" group)? Or any other configuration at all that might be according the the best practices?
