OpenSUSE Network :: Dell - Possible To Use WiFi With Latest SuSe LiveCD
Aug 28, 2011
I've been in doubt weather to install Linux open SUSE or Mint on my Dell inspiron 1501 laptop. Having tried the latest SUSE live CD (not finding a way to use WiFi) I decided to install Mint (Katya release). Now it turns out there's a bug on Ubuntu/debian related linux distros in connection with Dell Laptops, specifically on WiFi cards by Broadcom. (If you want to know more, check this Ubuntu forum thread and my comment on it.) My question is: are there any known bugs on Dell with OpenSUSE? An additional question would be: is it at all possible to use WiFi with the latest SUSE live CD?

So I've got a Dell Poweredge R410 with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 installed and my boss wants me to configure it like this:
Eth0 - No IP address (on general tab, activation set to "never")
Eth1 - No IP address (on general tab, activation set to "never")
Eth2 - No IP address (on general tab, activation set to "never")
Eth3 - No IP address (on general tab, activation set to "never")
bond0 - eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3 selected (Activation set to "On boot") No IP Address
bridge0 - bond0 selected (Activation set to "On boot"). IP, subnet and hostname defined.
The DNS and routing has all been set correctly. The problem is when I set the network configuration as above I cannot connect to the network I'm unable to ping the gateway. I only have 1 cable connected and it's plugged into eth0 but apparently this doesn't matter. If I delete the bond and bridge and instead apply the settings to eth0 it connects no problem but my boss wants to use load balancing and states that that setup should work.

I am super new to linux. I have tried a lot of distros but went with OpenSUSE11.3. I have both gnome and kde live cd. Now to the problem, When I put in the live cd and boot - the computer finds the wireless card and lets me connect to the internet. This works on both versions. But after clicking on the install icon the wireless no longer starts and then I cant get it to work. Maybe its something I should be doing. After all I am new to this.

My Dell Vostro 1520's Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card must not have been set-up correctly, as the Network Manager won't even let me select the wireless tab. Please just explain to me, step by step, what exactly I must do to make it work! Additionally, I can't figure out how to disable my Touchpad's Tap to Click funtionality, which must be done if I'm to effectively use my current KDE installation of openSUSE

I have just carried out a complete installation on my HP 2133 mini notebook. It was preloaded with suse 10.1 and the first time I connected it to my BT HomeHub2 was with the network icon on my home screen. Since switching to suse 11.2 when I click the same icon all I get is a setup screen with what seems like millions of setup fields that I do not understand? I have never worked with linux before so do not want to guess the settings. I have looked at google search for the answer but every page seems to be for computer programmers or I am just being dull. I can connect the ethernet cable and it works fine, but I cannot even find a network.

I just bought a new Dell Studio 1558 and I can't turn the wifi on when logging to my account, the wireless card is installed correctly but the button (F2) doesn't work to turn the wifi on.
[You can see the keyboard shape here]
On windows there is a program from dell that associate these keys (wifi -F2- and Eject optical drive) to their functions.
I wonder how can I achieve this under OpenSuse.

for any reason after installation system hangs up and nothing happens, im newbie about linux, maybe the problem is the RAID 1 configuration of the disks. The machine is a R710 Server:
2 x Xeon E5520
4 x 2 GB Memory
4 X 750 GB SATA 7200 3.5" disk
PERC 6/i Raid controller

I have my brand new Dell latitude e6410 delivered with Windows 7 already installed. I want a dual boot and I decided to try SUSE for the first time. I used the installation DVD, the installation seemed to end up well. The problem is that already at the first reboot, the screen went completely black. By pressing ctrl-alt-del I can reboot the laptop. It seems to me a problem with the graphic card.
My setup is:
Dell Latitude e6410
Intel i5 m560 @2.67 GHz
nVidia NVS 3100M
4Gb DDR ram
Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connector
If I start in failsafe mode, the X server starts, I have KDE, although with a somewhat sketchy graphic, I can use SUSE almost normally. The main problem in this case being that the system doesn't find any ethernet/wi-fi device, so I cannot connect to the Internet (I'm writing from Win7 right now). I tried choosing the default SUSE boot with the additional boot option "nomodeset" at the grub prompt. This is a suggestion mentioned in another post on this forum, although in that case the problem was coming from a bug dealing with an Intel graphic card. The system goes up but then kde doesn't start. I'm asked to lgin at a prompt. If I try to launch kde from command line (startkde), it complains that the variable $DISPLAY is not setup.
This is where I am now. I'm quite out of ideas, so I want to ask you few things. First stupid question: is the problem coming likely from the drivers of the nvidia graphic card? Second question: in that case, how can I fix it, considering that the linux partition is "isolated"? The fact that in failsafe SUSE doesn't see any network adapter concerns me a bit.

I've got a Suse 11.2 laptop with a bluetooth Wifi device (recognised and working), and an Android 2.1 smartphone (Motorola Milestone). I would like to connect the two via Wifi. I don't have a Wifi router, I've just used it now and again through hotspots. I normally connect to the internet via a mobile broadband USB dongle. So, I suppose I need to configure my laptop as a Wifi router in order to set up our little private LAN between the two devices. Is that right? If yes, can someone please point me to a relevant howto because I've searched high and low and didn't find anything. :-(If the above is not right, then where should I look, please? Is it possible at all, actually?

I have a Dell Latitude E6500 running Opensuse 11.3. As far as I can tell the module for my wireless card is loaded correctly and it's working:
Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i wifi
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100
Code:
[ 556.642557] iwlagn: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link AGN driver for Linux, in-tree:d
[ 556.642560] iwlagn: Copyright(c) 2003-2010 Intel Corporation
[Code].....
The funny thing is that it works fine in a Fedora installation, which has an older kernel and older drivers, on the same laptop. The fact that the indicator light doesn't come in when the physical switch is turned on suggests it's something to do with that switch.

I have openSUSE 11.2 (m8) Gnome LiveCD installed in my VirtualBox and now i want to move the schema to server side. I know, this is not normal, but it's fun - 'Have a lot of fun!', that is what i do in my study time.
So, how can i remove the packages useless for servers in a simple mode? My first idea uses category GROUP of a package, but this not work.
I can, for example, see the packages on System/Daemons, ok, but i can't see a list of groups inside System/ in a easy way.
And /usr/share/doc/rpm/GROUPS it's not full.

I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.
My exact hardware:
Code:
I notived the following problems in /var/log/kern.log

I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

I often use an Ethernet cable to connect my computer to another computer for various purposes. But when I do that, I cannot use the internet even though I'm still connected to a WiFi access point. I'm presuming that's because openSUSE is trying to reach the internet through the Ethernet cable, which has precedence over WiFi.Is there a way to enable internet usage via WiFi while I'm connected to another computer over Ethernet?

I am and Ubuntu user, and recently became interested in KDE 4, since it obviously looks much more modern that GNOME. I tried Kubuntu, but didn't really like it that much, so I downloaded openSUSE 11.3 and installed it on an old 40 GB IDE hard drive, leaving my existing Windows/Ubuntu HD untouched. The only problem is the Wi-Fi doesn't work, although it did work on the liveCD. Issuing the command gives the Wi-Fi card as being a RaLink RT2561/RT61. Does anyone know how to fix this? I really hope I can get this fixed, as I've heard some great things about openSUSE KDE, and would love to make it my primary OS, completely dumping Ubuntu. I'm using the 64-bit CD.

New SUSE 11.3 install connects to network/internet etc OK with DHCP-assigned IP address. When I switch to static IP, I can no longer ping internal network, or anything else. This works OK with SUSE 11.2 on same hardware and (as far as I can see) same setup. Some diagnostics are shown below.
Firewall
Disabling the firewall makes no difference.
Not using a network manager (can't see how to assign fixed address if I do - all greyed out).
ifup eth0:
eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
SuSEfirewall2: Warning: no default firewall zone defined, assuming 'ext'
(not sure why the warning - eth0 is assigned to external in the firewall setup).
[code]....

I am attempting to setup a linux file server in active directory. It has been kind of an ongoing project(nightmare) for me... I have tried a few distributions of linux and I have to say I really enjoy openSUSE. YaST is my best friend. Now to the problem at hand.
I have samba installed and configured for the domain. I was able to successfully join the machine to the domain. I can even log on using domain user names and passwords (more than I was able to accomplish with other distros...). Where I am having a problem currently is I cannot see the suse machine from a windows machine. I can access shares from suse to windows though.

If I boot the text version and then perform a startx command I still get no display. I have been able to install other Linux distributions without this type of issue. Is there a way to configure something for the display to function properly?

I just bought a new Dell Latitude E6510. When I boot from the Ubuntu 10.10 64bit disk (I've checked the disk for errors already), the initial, purple splash screen comes up, but then the screen just goes blank and stays that way. I never even see a grub screen.I tried Linux Mint 9 with both the 64 bit DVD and the 32 bit CD. Both Mint disks bring up a grub boot screen, but then the screen goes blank just like Ubuntu 10.10. I can hear Mint's "login" sound, but nothing shows up on the screen

I can't get WLAN up on my Dell Mini 10v (BCM 4312)/openSUSE 11.3/LXDE. And yes, I have thoroughly read iwfingers's 'Getting your Wireless to Work'. After installing openSUSE 11.3 ifconfig can see eth0, l0 and wlan0. No WLAN running. dsmesq|grep firmware prompts me to '/usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware"
After having done that and reboot ifconfig can only see eth0 and l0. Installing broadcom-wl-5.60.48.36-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.0_12-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm (current ones from Packman) does, Shall I try to install the drivers without installing the firmware first?
Why does broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.0_12-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm install a new default kernel? Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 had no problems with WLAN.

I'd now like to add OpenSUSE 11.2 but if I accept auto partition it seems to want to overwrite the Mint partitions which I assume are sda5 and sda8. So how should I proceed with manual install as I have the following large number of existing partitions:

Should I resize sda3? can I use sda8 as /Home for both Mint and OpenSUSE?

I will like to know how to install ethernet drivers dell inspiron N4010 on opensuse 11.3, when I go to YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings and then I have a Warning message "Network is currently controlled by NetworkManager and its settings cannot be edited by Yast. Then I click on OK, I go to Global Options and i click on Traditional Method with ifup, and then I go to Overview and I have this information:
Name IP Address
Attansic Ethernet controller Not configured
Broadcom WLAN controller DHCP
This is my first time using openSuse, I previously install Ubuntu and I had some similar problem with the internet I hope fix that problem as soon as possible and keep using openSuse. Other thing is that I don't have any internet connection with this laptop even wire or wireless connection.
