OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Connect To Repositories
Jan 18, 2011
I currently installed openSUSE 11.3 on my laptop. I need to install some packages from repositories, but I had problem. When I add new repository (Index of /pub/packman/suse/11.2/x86_64), error dialog box show up. Here is wahat is written on the dialog box:
Error code: connection failde
Error message: could'nt connect to host
Is it network/internet problem configured on my installation, or admin disable/restricted connection to the host.

When I try to do an online update, I get this error:
message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org
I have read everything I can find about this issue but can't resolve it. All my browsers are fine and connect ok. I am connected by DSL through a modem to the AT&T network I have disabled ipv6 in network devices network settings - is there anything else I should do?.

Annoying problems I have with Yast2 Software Management?
1. Sometimes when starting Yast2 Software Management it fails to connect to the SW repositories. It happens inevitably (i.e. without exception) at the first attempt after a fresh boot up, and sometimes otherwise. I can only retry or abort, and retrying usually brings no success anyway. Is it perhaps due to a time-out somewhere?
2. If I click on the 'abort' button (see above) or 'cancel' in Yast otherwise, I inevitably (i.e. without exception) get the following type of error message
Code:
** (<unknown>:4220): CRITICAL **: giop_thread_request_push: assertion `tdata != NULL' failed
** (<unknown>:4220): CRITICAL **: giop_thread_request_push: assertion `tdata != NULL' failed
** (<unknown>:4220): CRITICAL **: giop_thread_request_push: assertion `tdata != NULL' failed
** (<unknown>:4220): CRITICAL **: giop_thread_request_push: assertion `tdata != NULL' failed
(sometimes only 2 identical lines of error code)
I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with Gnome.

I installed openSUSE 11.3 off the 4.7 GB dvd two days ago. The first thing that I noticed was that the official repositories didn't seem to work. Starting the Install/remove software manager would throw three "Package-kit error: repo not available file (in one of the cases) repomd.xml not found on medium (the url of the official repository)".I searched for a solution online, but couldn't find anything, except for the downtime on Aug 21(I didn't have the system installed back then). The last thing that I did was to edit the URL of each repository by simply copy-pasting the URL from the website, in case of gremlins. This stopped the twelve or so error messages each that I used to get each time Install/remove started to autorefresh.Now I just get one error - WarningThere was an error in the repository initialization.Which tells me as much as the first series, but definitely saves me time

I installed 11.4 from a verified and checked CD. Had and worked through the DSL and ipv6 problems discussed elsewhere in this forum. So browsers now work on the internet, but neither zypper nor yast will resolve the 11.4 repositories, so no refresh, no updates. Browsers bring up the repositories fine, so I can download and install an rpm that way, but it's not a life. Haven't been able to find this issue elsewhere, asis usually the case.

I work behind an ISA proxy. I have to authenticat with domainuser. When defining proxy settings with yast, I cannot put "domainuser" in the URL, so I add it in text mode in /etc/sysconfig/proxy for all protocols. Example: [URL] Then I have to logout/login in order yast to work.
BUT:
- I cannot add communauty repositories.
- zypper fails
In order to make zypper and adding repositories to work, I have to suppress one of the two back-slash like:
[Code]..

I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

After installing 11.4, I need to type in the command to update the firmware for a broadcom wifi adapter. Then I needed to reboot, twice, before the system knew to use the adapter (where the adapter wifi light goes from orange to blue).
Then I needed to add my wireless network and type in my key. But the key does not take. If I click on my wireless network icon, it just re-asks for the key and does not connect nor give any other message. Network icon continues to display no connection.
So I need to reboot again.
When the system starts again, the adapter is blue, I click on the icon for my wifi network and it connects without asking for my key and I can then set to start my wifi by default.
Now my wifi works fine.

I installed OpenSuSE 11.3. The only "extra" package I put in after the install was VirtualBox-ose. The firewall is disabled. I gave the machine a static IP address. I can get to the Internet from the machine. I enabled sshd to start on boot with "chkconfig sshd on" and also verified the service is running on the machine. I can ssh user@localhost from the machine as well.
When I try to connect to SSH from another machine, I get a connection refused. I verify that the firewall is down. I also try to get to VNC -- same problem: Connection refused. I ping the machine for fun. If I try to SSH again, it sometimes gives me a logon? I would check the server logs for the connection refused, but I wouldn't know where to look. I started in /var/log/messages, but nothing seemed to jump out there. I also find it strange because I can RDP to a windows guest running under VirtualBox. The Windows guest uses Bridged Network and DHCP.
I also find it interesting that I sometimes type a "ping google.com" from the 11.3 box and it will just hang - no output. Then I open firefox and get to the internet. All of a sudden, ping starts to give output. Could this be a neetwork card issue? A configuration issue? I don't know where to start.

I am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.

I just installed opensuse 11.4 and i'm not being able to connect to my wireless lan. It recognizes my network, but when I click "ok" after typing the password it is like I had done nothing, no connection is set at all.I guess it is probably some configuration stuff since my notebook recognizes all available wireless networks. Sorry about the lack of details, but that is all I got.

I just installed OpenSuse 11.1 on a netbook via network install. It's a dual boot with windows XP. In XP, the wireless card works perfectly, but in openSuse, it never connects. It cann see the wireless networks available but it won't connect to my network!
I even tried this to no avail: Wireless will not work when dual-boot with Windows XP&Vista | SUSE & openSUSE
I'm using:
Asus EEE 1002 HA
Wireless Card: Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter
WPA2 (although when I switched the router to WPA, it still didn't work)
The weird thing is during install I told it to test the wireless card and it worked, but now it doesn't.
