OpenSUSE Network :: 11.4 Zypper Cannot Resolve Repositories

Mar 28, 2011

I installed 11.4 from a verified and checked CD. Had and worked through the DSL and ipv6 problems discussed elsewhere in this forum. So browsers now work on the internet, but neither zypper nor yast will resolve the 11.4 repositories, so no refresh, no updates. Browsers bring up the repositories fine, so I can download and install an rpm that way, but it's not a life. Haven't been able to find this issue elsewhere, asis usually the case.

OpenSUSE :: Zypper Won't Download Any Packages / Resolve This?

Jul 8, 2011

Zypper seems unable to reach the openSUSE servers. I am currently on a network that may or may not block certain traffic, so I don't know if their firewall is in the way. I am able to browse the web without any problems. Sometimes Zypper downloads proceed eventually, but the download is doggone slow. I did this code...

Apparently Zypper has trouble downloading this URI, but if I open it in Chrome it loads perfectly without any problems. How can I find the root of this problem?

OpenSUSE :: Not Able To Download Community Repositories / Resolve This?

Jan 30, 2010

After upgrading to 11.2 I'm trying to install required codecs for restricted formats and following the advice that is given, and starting at "Step 1", making sure that I have at least the OSS, non-OSS etc. repos.

For some reason, when I try to add community repositories through yast, I get a Warning pop-up, stating "Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined".

Am I doing something wrong? If tried about 20 times...and so far no luck.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.4 Zypper Digest Verification Failed

May 17, 2011

I recently reinstalled my workstation from OpenSuse 11.2 to 11.4. After the installation, I found that I could not run zypper anymore. A few things to note first.

- OpenSuse 11.4 x64 - behind corporate firewall (which worked fine with zypper as long as a proxy was configured with previous versions

- used that ZYPP_ARIA=0 variable previously to help). - proxies configured in /etc/sysconfig/proxy. - all other network utilities I normally use (browser, ssh) all work fine. - I have removed all repositories and added them again several times. I have also done "zypper clean" several times not that I would expect that to be better than removing and re-adding the repositories. When I attempt to run "zypper ref" or "zypper in foo" I get the following:

[code]...

If I manually use wget to grab the package and either run it directly or insert it into the /var/cache/zypp tree (replacing the metalink version zypper complains about) it always works and gives me the right file.....

OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Resolve Host Names On Local Network?

Mar 9, 2010

I have a mac and an openSUSE box connected wirelessly to a router. From my mac, if I ping the Linux machine by both ip address and hostname "elmo.local", I get a response. If I ping my mac from the Linux machine using its ip address, I get a response. However, if I ping the mac from the Linux box using its name "kermit.local" - nothing!

This means in order to share files between them via the network, I have to use the ip address rather than name, but I'd rather not. When I had Ubuntu installed instead of openSUSE this all worked fine out of the box, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the setup of openSUSE rather than the router or the mac.

OpenSUSE Network :: Official Repositories Not Working In 11.3?

Aug 26, 2010

I installed openSUSE 11.3 off the 4.7 GB dvd two days ago. The first thing that I noticed was that the official repositories didn't seem to work. Starting the Install/remove software manager would throw three "Package-kit error: repo not available file (in one of the cases) repomd.xml not found on medium (the url of the official repository)".I searched for a solution online, but couldn't find anything, except for the downtime on Aug 21(I didn't have the system installed back then). The last thing that I did was to edit the URL of each repository by simply copy-pasting the URL from the website, in case of gremlins. This stopped the twelve or so error messages each that I used to get each time Install/remove started to autorefresh. Now I just get one error - WarningThere was an error in the repository initialization.Which tells me as much as the first series, but definitely saves me time

BUT:
- I cannot add communauty repositories.
- zypper fails

In order to make zypper and adding repositories to work, I have to suppress one of the two back-slash like:

OpenSUSE :: WARNING - Unable To Download List Of Repositories Or No Repositories Defined

Feb 9, 2011

I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

OpenSUSE :: Internet / Network Not Working On 11.2 KDE / Resolve This?

Apr 4, 2010

Just recently installed Opensuse 11.2 in a KDE environment. The problem I am facing is that when I connect it to my network either via wired or wirless neither getting internet or access to the network although the network manager shows the connection as active
I am using a Dlink Di-524 Wireless Router at home
The Wirless router for the computer is Broadcom BCM 4312
Was able to install the drivers for this from the packman repository

Also when I connect my laptop directly to the internet connection via wired it is working fine. However if i connect it to my wireless router either over wifi or thru wired it just shows connected but i can neither access internet or other computers on the network.
Have checked the wireless router other computers (windows and ubuntu are being able to access the internet via it)
Results of my ifconfig-a command when i am connected over my wirless connection code...

OpenSUSE Network :: Resolve Local Hostnames Without DNS ?

Jul 14, 2010

How do you get linux to resolve local hostnames without DNS?

I've recently migrated from a fully windows home network, to a few linux machines and im unable to ping any local machines with hostname via these linux machines. i can ping IP and internet hostnames. also, windows > anything pings ok too. however linux > anything will not ping via hostname.

I beleive it's an additional service running on windows to resolve hostnames without DNS (wins/netbios).

DNS is done via a netgear DG834 router (DNS forwarding).

I know i could either use direct IP, or add machines into the hosts file, but im wondering if theres some way around that and to have it dynamically update like it does on the windows machines. static mappings seem a bit silly inside DHCP zones

I've seen some reports of avahi causing local network issues (taking over the .local domain), but i think this only extends to having to manually enter in .local after the hostname and even after removing avahi, the problem is still present.

OpenSUSE :: Critical Zypper Bug ?

Sep 7, 2010

I don't know why but sometimes zypper (v1.4.5) removes some of the installed packages before upgrading them.

Actually it removes it even before downloading a newer version. I just wonder what a stupid f**k implemented this behavior. I wish something awful happens to him.

An hour ago I tried to update few packages, among those were sysconfig, firefox and yast. Guess what? Zypper removed those before downloading newer versions. Due to a temporary network connection loss zypper could not download packages and quit leaving me without firefox, without yast and, what's even worse, without sysconfig package which contains essential system scripts such as ifup, ifdown etc (so my network went down completely without a possibility to restore). It's a big luck there was no new package of rpm (or it would be removed by zypper too) so I could just download those packages with my second PC and reinstall them from a memory stick.

Now I'm interested where should I file this bug, because without a doubt it's a critical one.

OpenSUSE :: KDE Fails After Zypper Up

Sep 14, 2010

Yesterday I performed a zypper up on my system. Stock KDE4 that comes with 11.3. After I restarted the computer, it would get about 4/5 the way through the progress bar that displays when first starting then lock up hard. Starting in safe mode works. With a little experimenting I found that typing x11failsafe to the boot up options line let me start without a problem also.

The sleazy workaround would be to add that parameter to the grub menu, but I'd rather have a real fix. Has anyone else seen this issue? Is there a fix for it?

OpenSUSE :: How To Update The Via Zypper

Dec 6, 2010

updating via Zypper. Recently I decided to do all the system updates via Zypper, because I trust Zypper more than the other update mechanisms. since 2 days I always get the following message in the terminal, when I do

Code:

zypper up

Code:

The following package updates will NOT be installed:

gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base kcm_gtk kdebase4-openSUSE
kdebase4-runtime-branding-openSUSE kdebase4-workspace-branding-openSUSE
kdelibs4-branding-openSUSE kdm-branding-openSUSE kio_sysinfo

[code]....

the packages mentioned in there are always the same, but I am more concerned about this message in general. In Ubuntu (which I used before) and in Debian, such a message meant, that you have to install some additional packages to resolve dependencies.

Code:

apt-get dist-upgrade

with this command the system installed the required additional packages and afterwards the packages which were listed as "will not be installed" so does this message in Zypper mean the same? Can I also do something like a "dist-upgrade" in OpenSuse, without bringing the whole system to (for example) 11.4, but to get all the updates including some new dependencies?

OpenSUSE Install :: Run Zypper Dup In X Or Not?

Dec 6, 2009

I'm upgrading from 11.2 RC1 to the final release.

I searched here, but didn't find much in the way of tutorials. This page was the best I found: Upgrade openSUSE

That page indicates that I only need to run

Code:
zypper dup

Very simple, but is it complete?

Thinking it is not that simple, I put together my own list of steps and I'd like some feedback on whether all this is necessary. In particular, is it necessary to run zypper dup outside X? Are my steps too complex?

sudo -s
zypper lr --export backups/repos/foo.repo
zypper ref
zypper in zypper libzypp (nothing to do)

[Code].....

I solved that by going into yast and disabling the CD-based repository. How do you do this in zypper when the error message doesn't tell you the name of the offending repository? That error could be very confusing to someone who didn't realize that a CD-based repository would be responsible for this.
