Jun 18, 2010
I have setup a NFS-share from an SUSE Enterprise Server 10 SP1 This NFS-share i connect on my OpenSUSE11.2 64bits and mount is in /mnt
I can list files and directorys, but can't copy. It manage to "copy" some folders, but then it stop and say it cant copy tjhe files and ask to skip files. Only folders are copyed/created localy but no files.
Where is the problem? Is it SLES or is it my local OpenSUSE?

I have installed opensuse 11.3 64 bit. For many years was able to connect to a file server within our domain via konqueror in all previous versions of opensuse using: smb://user@server.ip.adress/userdata/user_name/
This would ask me a password and then I would be able to move, read, create and delete files. I never configured samba on the linux client because this method always worked. However very recently (I suspect since I installed 11.3) I am facing a problem I cannot resolve. I can still log in, browse the remote folder, read files, create new ones (for example a txt file), delete them, but I cannot copy into that remote folder files larger than about 20KB (I try copying or moving files by dragging them from my desktop into the konqueror window that shows the remote folder contents).
Small files are OK, but for files are larger than ~20KB there is an error saying: Could not write to file smb://{path_to_my_file_in_the_remote_folder}. Strangely, the file is nevertheless created in the remote folder, but with a fixed length size of 32KiB.

After update 11.2 to 11.4 copy jobs from netware 5.1 volume to local disk linux system does crash after a couple of seconds. I might have to do if there a allot of small files in that job. If happend system reboot is required because unmount netware volume nor delete copied files to the local linux system is not possible. Recompiling ncpfs package not possible because error free source package ncpfs version 2.2.6 might not be availble.

At my workplace, Ubuntu connects to the wireless internet with no problem at all. When I log into openSUSE or PClinuxOS (the other two distros I use) I can't connect. Is there a way to copy the network files from Ubuntu to at least, not replace, but use as a reference for trying to trouble shoot my other two distro networking issues?

I was previously running Ubuntu 9.04, with no problems, however since installing 10.04 this past weekend, I noticed a problem today. We have a NetApp FAS250 at work, formatted as CIFS filesystem so our windows users can access it. With 9.04 I had no problem ready and writing to the shares.Today, I tried to copy some files from one folder to another and the "File Operation" dialog came up with 0 bytes of 2.8MB -- 0 seconds left (0 bytes/sec). However, no files are being copied.
I closed the dialog and tried again, same thing. After a reboot I tried to copy files off the share to my hard, same thing, the dialog would just sit there. After another reboot, I tried to copy files from my hard drive to my hard drive (different folder), that works fine, and copying from my hard drive to the network works fine. Just not from the network.

how to copy files over my network between my two computers.
I have done it before, but don't remember all the things I had to go through to do it.
None of the instructional things that I have found has given me actual instructions that I understand.
Actually I have not even found instructions for using scp that I can understand. I have all ready done this in the past, yet with 30 years experience with computers, a bachelors degree in computer science, 20 years experience with linux I still cannot understand anything that I have found that tells how to do this.
I have two problems.
(1) the actual syntax of scp. None of the instructions I have found tell what anything is in their examples.
They might say:
scp blah blah yadda yadda zonk zonk.
They don't bother to tell me what blah blah is or what yadda yadda is, or what zonk zonk is.
(2) Also none of them tells what has to be set up in configuration files for things to work. For example one of my computers is named KING, and one is named QUEEN. There is probably something on computer KING that tells what QUEEN is. I don't know what this configuration file is, so of course I can't put in the entries that would do the job.
So where are some instructions that I might find for doing this copy of files over my network of two computers?

I have a newly installed Dell Optiplex 755 with Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) and I am having serious issues with network copying. Whenever I start rsync och scp with larger amounts of data my system becomes practically unresponsive (all types of apps grey out) until those processes are completed. Cpu stays at below 10% and I have lots of free memory and such .

I have have ubuntu 10.10 at work hooked onto a Windows Server 2003. I have pretty much everything working peachy except I can't copy files onto the network drive. When I start my computer, i have to manually go to network places and navigate around until i find my company share drive and then its mounted for the rest of the day. I can read files from the share drive and oddly enough save documents through programs like gimp and open office, however if i go through nautilus to try and copy a file from my desktop to the company share, it won't let me. It just says "Error while copying 'yourfile'" and the details just say "invalid argument."

In mi fstab file I mount a smb file server at boot. The code is:
//<ip address>/data /home/eng-2/NAS smbfs credentials=/home/eng-2/.smbcredentials,dir_mode=0775,gid=1000,uid=1000 0 0
Transfer rate to the server is approx 100 KB/s
Whilst transfer rate from the server 16 MB/s
If I mount it from Places>connect to server. Both to and from speeds are 16 MB/s. Why is it so slow when mounted through fstab?

I have just rewired my LAN using Cat 6 cables. Download- and Upload speeds to my main machine are great :However, it seems my LAN speed is very slow. when I copy large files from my main desktop pc to my mediaplayer, I only reach a speed of 3,7 MB/s in Ubuntu 10.10 using SMB protocol to connect to mediaplayer. I use a Sitecom WL351 Router that works fine as far as I can see. Using my dualboot Windows 7 I can copy the same large files using same setup (same pc to same mediaplayer) I can copy with almost 10 MB/s. I appreciate a little protocol overhead in Ubuntu, but this seems to be a little too much

I need a script to copy music from a network drive to my local disk. I require the script to auto mount the remote server, then to create the directory path to the mp3's I have a list of all teh songs in the following format, note some have spaces.
\7800SPARE4UsersPublicMusicSample MusicKalimba.mp3 \7800SPARE4UsersPublicMusicSample MusicMaid with the Flaxen Hair.mp \7800SPARE5UsersPublicMusicSample Song Sleep Away.mp3
I can use the following to mount the directory:
mount -t cifs //7800SPARE4/Users /dest-o username=user,password=pass
I'm thinking the best way would be to get the share name 7800SPARE and the grep for all these in the list, then mount it and do a while read LINE However I would need to creat the folders, I am unsure on how to do this. I think I would need to sed the backslashes to forward ones and then use rsync? Then unmount and move on to the next ones, if I can't mount the share It would be nice to log it and skip it.

On Linux Mint (Gnome) i used to go to Network drive. that is on the right hand side of Nautilus there is a short cut for Network. in there i could see my network hard drive and other laptops connected to the network, and i could access my files. but on OpenSuse, when i open the network folder, nothing comes up. may be it needs some sort of configuration.

I saved my entire home directory of 11.1 before installing 11.2.I am slowly recovering everything, but it seems that Tomboy doesn't use ~/.tomboy anymore.I copy that directory from my saved dir to my new homedir and it ignores it. I then deleted the .tomboy dir from my new homedir and created a new note. It didn't recreate ~/.tomboy.So, is there any way to copy my notes from 11.1 to 11.2?

How to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

I figure it is better to ask something silly rather than do something silly.
How do i copy the OpenSuse 11.1 repos to a local disk to get faster access?
If i do copy them will i need to copy the oss and non-oss repos again? (I know i will for update and maybe for others)
Is there a current repo for somewhat older ATI video cards like X1300?

I have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m.I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files).Of course this is a -first-find the *.m files script and -then copy the files into the hard disk. What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk.As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has

Few days ago formatted away winxp at office and installed OpenSUSE 11.2. In winxp USB speed was fine (actually full speed of my SDHC card using card-reader), but in SUSE it's about 1.13 MB/s.
The strange thing is - I have the same version of SUSE at home, on both desktop and laptop, with the only difference in kernel - at home both are default kernel, and desktop kernel at office.
Should I try default kernel and is there any way to determine the source of the problem?

Been using 11.4 for the last few days and I think I might really like it. Thought getting my Broadcom wireless to work would be the hard part but I'm having real trouble with USB transfers for some reason. Tried to copy a 700MB .avi to a USB stick yesterday, I know it's good as I use it regularly. I get the KDE notification that it has copied the file (seemed far too quick but didn't think much of it) and then went to watch it.
Didn't show up on my telly and when I stuck it back in the computer to check it had only copied an arbitrary 39MB of the file. Tried again this morning, copying three albums to my phone - I get the notification that copying files has been completed almost instantly, I let it sit for five minutes and of the three albums one track has been transferred. It's an Android phone so I can use a file browser to confirm they are there, but they're all 0 bytes in size.
