View 8 RepliesI'm running Amarok 1.4 and I frequently need to restart the sound daemon. As far as I can tell; no applications are using it at the time, but alsa cycles through my playlist without playing anything (i.e. loads track, doesn't play it, moves to the next track, so on and so forth).
I'm pretty sure this would have something to do with another process using the sndcard. I just don't know which one so I can kill it and troubleshoot why it's doing it.
I have two sound cards in my computer. OpenSuSE 11.3 recognizes them both without a problem, and I can play sound through each of them. Is it possible to set one application to use one sound card simultaneously with another sound card routing to a different application? That would be sweet. For example, I have my surround speakers plugged into one sound card, so I can provide music for the whole room, and have my PC speakers next to the monitor playing a movie.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have opensuse 11.2 installed with the latest version of kde. boot, root, and swap are hanging out loving life while home is in a software raid 10. So many years ago I installed an Xmystique 71 gold card. Works great, but only for one app. I pause a movie and want to crank some tunes it gives me fits. I am not a fan of this. I love my opensuse raid 10 but the sound is just killing me. Should I disable the Xmystique card and enable the default motherboard shwag? The embedded sound really is not that bad and should it give me a solution, as in I can utilize sound in more than one app at a time, I will gladly take it. I mean who does not want to utilize amarok whithout shutting down ..... or vlc or kaffeine or whatever.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have suse 11.4 installed and I wish to replace the on-board sound chip with an add-on sound card. The following are available at my local shop but they cannot advise whether any will work on Linux Suse 11.4.
Anyone know which of these cards will work on Suse 11.4?
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Asus Xonar DS
I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.
I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)
I have configured my sound drivers many times. After doing this i am able to listen a sound. But after booting there is necessary to configure them again. So is there a any way for permanent configuration.

* When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)
* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use an application (e.g., mplayer) to play sound that comes in my sound card (via the mic jack). (What I'm really trying to do is sync a sports broadcast by putting a delay on AM audio, as described here. I'm stuck at the part where it says "this shouldn't be too difficult".) I've seen some hints that there might be code-heavy solutions using LADSPA or some JACK SDK, but there's just gotta be a simpler way. I'm hoping for something like
Code:
mplayer -delay -7 - < /dev/mic
but I'm darned if I can find it. I'm sure there are plenty of other sports fans who would find this useful for syncing radio with the digital TV feed...
Is there any way, native or within download, of changing audio volume on a per-application basis? I vaguely remember doing this in the vista basic that was installed on this when I got it a couple of years ago, but was removed after a couple of months due to instability. I'd like music streaming thru VLC louder relative to games being played thru Adobe Flash in Chrome (which are at 100% of possible, 100% of the time, no options other than mute).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI switched to OpenSUSE last month, and so far so good. But one thing that I haven't found yet is a CD ripping program. Yeah, I know, Amarok and K3B will both do it, but both seem a bit fiddly to configure and both are massive programs and seem to be over the top for what I want. When I used Ubuntu/Gnome I used GRip, and latterly RipperX, both of which do pretty much what it says on the tin - they rip CDs. And that's it. I'd prefer this kind of approach than the 'everything plus the kitchen sink' that I get with Amarok and K3B.Is there any kind of lightweight CD ripper in the OpenSUSE repos?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have all multimedia packages installed as the instructions of opensuse site (ffmpeg, libdvdcss, ...) and plus some others not mentioned there (gstreamer, libav ...).Recently I was watching a dvd in kaffeine but several times the video and audio had small stops of about one or half second. It even came to the point of skipping a bit of the video. I tried vlc and the same thing happenned up to a point where the video froze at all. Also in other dvd's, when I tried to watch the content of a menu option vlc skipped the first few second of that scene before playing it. I tried smplayer and the exhibition of video was perfect except by the fact that it don't recognize dvd menus and subtitles. All mplayer gui's don't recognize them.So what player available for opensuse is able to recognize menus, subtitles and at the same time play dvd movies without other problems?

I'm thinking maybe if there is something more straightforward.

I don't seem to get any sound out of any speaker tests, they all return that the device is missing, but I'll try others (I can't remember exactly which commands I've tried at this point, I've been scouring the web looking for things to try).
After a fresh install of 11.3 from 11.2 on my system I went about updating packages to play DVD's. On 11.2 I found a web page that talk you through it and it worked like a dream. But can't get vlc, cine, mplayer etc to play DVD's with sound only picture on11.3 or sound from websites, no sorry mplayer will play sound but it's mess up and i can't get rid of any subtitles.
I've been searching for almost a day, and no luck, I justended up installing more packages.
