OpenSUSE Multimedia :: USB Mic Inoperative OS 11.3 X32?
Aug 20, 2011
I can't get the microphone in my Logitech C310 Webcam to work at all. I'm running OS 11.3 x32-bit & KDE 4.4.4. The webcam works fine in Windows XP with Skype and Pidgin, so I know the hardware is good. I ran some searches, but I'm still not all that sure what it is that needs to be fixed. Following the troubleshooting steps yields the following: I've tried testing with commands like,
Code:
arecord -vv -f cd test.wav
and get only random noise. The Microphone responds to room noise in the Pulseaudio volume control app, but is otherwise dead in Linux. I've checked the mic settings in Kmix, and pavucontrol, and nothing is muted or turned all the way down. One thing that's a little different from the threads I've checked is that I can't run a test recording in arecord when pavucontrol is running - arecord will stop with an error like this:
Code:
bruces@linux-zho5:~> arecord -vv -f cd test.wav
ALSA lib pcm_dsnoop.c:593:(snd_pcm_dsnoop_open) unable to open slave
arecord: main:654: audio open error: Device or resource busy
I am not sure if this is normal behavior or not, so I thought I'd mention it.
Info from the:
Code:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
script is located here: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=c9...cfd56ab704e4cf
rpm -qa '*alsa*'

Flash (via Firefox) was working until a day or so ago, but now the content that is supposed to be viewable with Flash simply sits there and does nothing or comes up as a blank screen. I've tried several web pages, all with the same problem. Every indication, including the Adobe test page, shows that Flash is installed, although the Firefox page for "Manage Content Plugins" lists "Gnash SWF Player"as the application for x-shockwave-flash. If I try to install Flash again, I'm told that it's already installed. I can disable it in Firefox but I don't see how to remove it altogether so that I can reinstall it. How can I get my Flash content working again?
After installing Ubuntu 10.4, and rebooting, my cd/dvd and usb memory drives did not operate. An example of this problem is as follows: Upon inserting a cd or flash drive into my machine it would attempt to read the device but would fail. It would not display an icon on the desktop for either device. Upon opening Places>Computer the device would be displayed there. If either device were selected, and an attempt made to open it, the machine make another attempt to open and fail again.Ubuntu 10.4 was a clean install. I then did a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 with all updates and everything worked fine, then upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 with the same results.
I've built a script that should meet the requirements to pass the MMCHECK script written by J. McDaniels and RedDwarf. Save anywhere, call anything, and then (must be run as root):
chmod +x <nameOfFile> ./<nameOfFile> setup|remove Code: #!/bin/bash function addRepo() {
Recently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.
So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)
* An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module
* You have old third party modules lying around.
Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor or packager. And then when I click OK, it closes, and that's it. how to prevent this, so I can access the multimedia settings and change them. The reason I want to see the settings, is because Amarok 2.3 won't play any songs (even though version 1.4 still works).
Normally I find everything I need either in the documentation or forum, but it's been months, and this time I'm stumped. I'm posting the results of my latest tests, so I'm really sorry about the length of this post.
I can't play DVDs unless they've been burned by myself or a friend. I had no problems until around the beginning of April. I was running 11.2 on both my laptop and desktop. I think an update changed something. This was before 11.2 was officially retired a week or so later. I wanted to upgrade to 11.4 anyway, so I began with my laptop. During installation I wiped everything from my hard disk by creating new partitions and formatting them. After installation I installed the multimedia packages using one-click (opensuse-guide.org, not opensuse-community.org, although I did read what they said). I know one-click is not ideal, but I was curious. The result was that I still couldn't play DVDs.
I did a fresh installation, just to be on the safe side. This time I installed the packages according to Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide by caf4926. But I still couldn't play DVDs, so I went through the thread Check your multimedia problem in ten steps. Then I ran mmcheck (v2.35). I tried a few times, experimented, and in the end did another fresh install.
In the meantime, on my desktop, which still has 11.2 on it, I found the file which had been changed and changed it back, so I could play DVDs on it again. It was in /etc/udev/rules.d/, 70-persistent-cd.rules. This does not appear to be the problem in 11.4 on my laptop.
I have again installed the packages according to the multimedia installation guide, and done the ten-step check and run mmcheck and these are the results as they stand:
I couldn't find a package called mplayerplug-in. I used zypper to look for it.
I tried installing the totem packages in a previous installation, but they didn't make a difference, so I left them out this time.
I deinstalled my jdk, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, except that I get an error notification everytime I want to use LibreOffice. And I need it, so I'm putting it back soon.
So, these are my packages:
And this is what happens when I try to play a DVD using Kaffeine (since I don't an error message except from Kaffeine, and I've forgotten where my logs are):
And then comes Read error from: Error reading from DVD over the GUI.
And nothing else happens... I get no feedback from smplayer whatsoever. It opens, trys to read the DVD, and sits there. Even on the console.
I was using THIS guide to install restricted multimedia codecs. I got to the part where I had to switch system packages to the Packman packages. It came up with a number of dependency errors. I then had a stupid moment and told it to ignore the dependencies and break the applications. Now Xine won't even start, and Amarok seems to have disappeared on my computer. Oh and I also got a bunch of weird dependency problems when I was trying to install some of the packages from Packman too as listed on the guide. I also told it to ignore them when it couldn't find the dependencies. I'm scared I fudged multimedia up so badly I would have to do a clean install to get it back. BTW, I'm running openSUSE 11.2. I don't know if there are other specifications that matter.
i can't install multimedia codec, after installing i restart PC and then linux writes error kde4int i hadn't this error before, it begins after installing new monitor Samsung syncmaster B1940
I start this thread just to say publicly thanks to jdmcdaniel3 for his script mmcheck. It's very useful, and very well explained. As his thread is closed, I needed to start a new one. I would even suggest to make it a sticky.
I am trying to install missing codecs to my openSUSE 11.4.I found this. How to Install Multimedia Codecs in Linux - Softpedia.I downloaded file all-20110131.tar.bz2.There is no instructions where to download this file so i downloaded to /home/downloads.Before i use this i have a question - is this install all required codecs?I need codecs to play mkv, mp4, H264(x264), avi, no DVD
I'm trying to diagnose a weird problem ... maybe someone has an idea where to start. I'm having a problem with flash videos. The video part displays as if the fast-forward button is being held down; audio sounds correct.
I'm thinking "synchronization error" (duh!) but I'm not sure how to start to diagnose the issue. I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 x64, and the problem shows up in both chrome and opera.
Somehow I cannot get sound on my newly installed opensuse 11.3, KDE 64 bit..I tried the sound panel and it looks allright. I also followed the multimedia guide an installed packman repositiry and vlc, - i might have done it wrong?
I bought an iPod classic and am currently looking for alternatives to replace iTunes on openSUSE. As far as I understand the following are to be considered: Amarok, Banshee, Floola, gtkpod and Yamipod.
The restricted format FAQ sticky (Restricted formats - openSUSE) mentions a package called "kde4-k3b", but this doesn't show up in my listing. Which repository does kde4-k3b reside in? 11.2 KDE
Sceanrio: Childs homework requires the use of Audacity. Of course all other students working on the project with him have Windows. So I need mp3 supported with Audacity.Error message box, "you have compiled Audacity without mp3 support"Downloaded from: YAST with an additional plug-ins (I think). What I need: How do I add mp3 support, or compile it for Audacity?Does anyone have experience with this program? And have mp3 importing and playing within it also?
With reluctance I installed JRipper from Packman to rip some CD's because the KDE apps (K3B 2 and Amarok 2) on my 11.3 x86 install dont want to rip. Albeit a good ripping app I would like the KDE apps to work as intended.
K3b2 and K3b2 codecs packages are from Packman 11.3 x86 version. Amarok 2.3.1 is from the 11.3 x86 update apps openSUSE repro. LAME and transcode are also from Packman.
I have Toshiba X205 laptop that refuses to configure the sound card. The alsamixer works correctly now, however I can not get any sound output at all. Here is the alsaconf output. [URL]... I had tried OS 11.1 first, no sound. OS 11.2 sound worked great, and OS 11.3 again, no sound.
I just moved from 11.2 to 11.3 and I find that I'm unable to get my sound working. I get this output from dmesg:
Code: [ 6.414532] EDAC MC0: Giving out device to 'amd64_edac' 'RevF': DEV 0000:00:18.2 [ 6.414550] EDAC PCI0: Giving out device to module 'amd64_edac' controller 'EDAC PCI controller': DEV '0000:00:18.2' (POLLED) [ 6.506460] Error: Driver 'pcspkr' is already registered, aborting...
[Code]....
I don't seem to get any sound out of any speaker tests, they all return that the device is missing, but I'll try others (I can't remember exactly which commands I've tried at this point, I've been scouring the web looking for things to try).
After a fresh install of 11.3 from 11.2 on my system I went about updating packages to play DVD's. On 11.2 I found a web page that talk you through it and it worked like a dream. But can't get vlc, cine, mplayer etc to play DVD's with sound only picture on11.3 or sound from websites, no sorry mplayer will play sound but it's mess up and i can't get rid of any subtitles.
I've been searching for almost a day, and no luck, I justended up installing more packages.
(my system does play sound so it's not on mute as it always plays the start up turn)
I'm a newbie to Suse and determined to stick with it.Mp3s play in amarok, option to rip cd to mp3s as well. However empty folder created with no MP3. I tried K3B and error re: need MP3 Mad MP3 library. I have read various forum posts and can't pinpoint where the issue arises.I have gone through steps on multimedia repos and restricted formats. I will submit details of my system shortly, but in meantime wonder if there is a simple solution I am missing not done.
Last Night I upgraded to KDE 4.5.90 (KDE 4.6 RC1). I got a message telling me hardware had been removed. After much trial and error it seems that the update REMOVED alsa-firmware. To fix this just reinstall alsa-firmware logout and login again and your sound should work again. I am not sure if you need to logout and login but i know if you do it does work and I guess KDE should detect it when it loads. So if your upgrading to RC1 remember after installation reinstall alsa-firmware as root > zypper in alsa-firmware
I installed Open Suse 11.3, but no support mp3, mp4, dvd. The question is about openSUSE 11.X Addon NonOss. If I install this addon it has this support?
