OpenSUSE Install :: Way To Install 11.2 From USB-stick ?
Nov 21, 2009
OK, a netbook have no DVD-drive so there is need for usb-stick if U dont have a working network and other connected machine with the iso-file for 11.2, or a quick reliable internetconnection and lot of time.
So, I found the new article about live-usb here:
Live USB stick - openSUSE.
My first question is: I have a well working stationry computer right now running SUSE 11.2, and I am thinkin of using a USB-stick together with these instructions in order to install 11.2 on my netbook (currently running a problematic 11.0 version):
Linux Instructions
1) Learn how your USB stick is recognized by the system:
linux-vgqb:~ # ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/*usb*
It will print out something like:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 13. Aug 10:04 /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Kingston_DataTraveler_II+_5B751D8C1994-0:0 -> ../../sdx
Here /dev/sdx is used in the commands to shorten it, normally /dev/disk/by-id/.. is used directly to avoid overwriting of the hard disk.
2) Use this command to write (as root) the LiveCD iso to your USB stick. Be careful to replace /dev/sdx with the actual hard disk device learned from command above, and replace the name of the iso (if=openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso) with the actual name of the iso image you downloaded:
dd if=openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M
The live ISO is relying of a working network or internet connection I think, how can I as easy use the full DVD.iso that I already have?
Is there not a way to put also the DVD.iso on the USB, why use the live-option?
once long time ago I succeded the long way, described under section 2:
Live USB stick - openSUSE
I think....And I really would prefer not to have to go through that again.
As I said, I manged to install a fully working 11.2 on a nother computer, even if I first tried to upgrade from 11.1 (which kept a frezing mouse problem I had got recently), and on second try with re-installation instead, had the runlevel3 activated giving me only a black screen first, which I solved by writing a simple 5 on boot options (also something that really could be put out more obvious for us non-gurus out here).
Whith this I want to say that I really think Im not a total beginner.
Despite my "competence", I see big problems in this matter on such a particulary simple task as a installing SUSE from an USBstick on such a usual device as a netbook (Acer Aspire One) today.
I mean SUSE is supposed to be the easiest for us non-gurus, isnt it?

I have done a big big mistake (I could beat myself up for that) with my netbook and now I am sitting here, not getting openSUSE installed on it.
I wanted to try another netbook linux and installed (more by accident than intentionally) Easy Peasy Linux. This system is not bad, but cannot work with the wireless adapter in my netbook. However, I then wanted to install openSUSE 11.4 again, which ran fine on the netbook. But the install always gets stuck in different stages and I donīt know why.
Sometimes a failure message comes up: "filesystem is read only, rebooting in 120 seconds", but I am not really sure if this is for the harddrive or the usb stick. In other occasions, the bootprocess until install gets stuck at "starting KDM". Nothing happens then... thats it.
I already have reformatted the usb stick and copied the openSUSE Live CD via Imagewriter on it again... no success.
So now I am really confused, because I donīt know if there is something wrong with the harddrive? Or is it the stick itself? How can I find this out?
If it is the harddrive, how can I at least refomat it? Remember: no CD or DVD drive, just USB stick...
How can I find out if the image on the stick is ok? I already tested the install media and it said: "checksum ok"

Recently got sent a laptop to install Linux on it. The customer wants opensuse 11.3 on it. Problem is, his built-in optical drive came DOA and when I tried to make a LiveUSB it threw an error message during boot about not finding the live image. Is there any special process that I would need to do to get around that error message and be able to boot off the USB stick.
Customer's laptop comes with a very weird BIOS that won't let me boot off an external DVD drive, but boots off USB sticks just fine.

I have read lots about KDE (4.xx) freeze on OpenSuse 11.3 Live. Well I have experienced it first hand.
My hard disk which had Opensuse 11.3 (reiserfs) crashed. It was a dual boot and a windows upgrade wiped out the partition information. I am still trying to resuce with dd-rescue.
Now in the meanwhile I burnt a opensuse 11.3 Live CD and worked on it for a week. I was bit annoyed that every too often the cd drive spins....so I decided to burn a usb stick. Its a 2 gb USB stick. I followed the instructions to the toto to burn the ISO image. Then my nightmares started
The USB STICK boot was smooth. However when the desktop starts ...the trouble begins. I clicked on firefox...after about 10 seconds I experienced the dreaded freeze first. I had to reboot the system.
Everything was fine till i started Firefox, the system froze. Now reboot -> start -> firefox --> freeze cycle continued. I got fed up.
I then downloaded google-chrome. Installed it (after updating a couple of drivers) . It worked flawless. I loaded it with graphics...still no problem. Then started firefox .. the system froze. I even disabled all KDE windows animation, set only one window pane, still there is a freeze.
I took my USB stick off and rebooted the system though live CD. I started firefox on boot, NO problems. Opened many many tabs. Still no problem.
So there is a SURE problem with USB + Firefox. I SUSPECT IT MORE DUE TO NETWORK ISSUES THAN GUI (DRIVER) ISSUE. If it were to be GUI driver issue firefox should have fozen both with CD and USB.
Mine is pentium duo processor machine with 2gb RAM (DDR2). Intel chipset for video. I checked the MD5 of downloaded ISO its matched the one on the site. So the iso image is flawless.
All the threads in this regard suspect the video drivers, but I ALSO suspect the network. May be there is a wait() state in the network driver that is holding the process for way too long causing the freeze. Somebody needs to check this up.
The freeze is on USB stick boot only and not on CD boot.

I'm currently having troubles upgrading my 11.1 system. My SuSE running 11.3 had crashed, and when I tried to reinstall it I couldn't find the cd. I only have a 11.1 distro cd, in which I had installed. I want to upgrade to 11.2 since that should be the easiest, from then I think i can figure out how to upgrade from 11.4. I currently do not have any cd's or a usb flash drive to mount the iso image onto. I've read through the wiki looking for a solution, but even with updating my repos i still haven't found the answer.
how to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.2 without a cd or usb stick.

I've followed the instructions at Live USB stick - openSUSE for creating a bootable USB stick. I have attempted this with both a 32 bit and 64 bit image. Unfortunately my system will not boot up the stick - it just loads my hard disk as normal.
Background info
1. I have checked the iso images against the checksum and they are ok;
2. I have used the same images to create bootable CDs which work fine;
3. My machine IS capable of booting a USB stick - by copying syslinux onto the stick, the machine does see the stick
4. The order of boot in BIOS is stick first. Again, I have proven this works ok using a utility called USB Boot Tester.
I am unsure what to try next. I recall reading on this forum there was a problem booting from USB stick if the computer also had a CD drive. That was in an early version of LiveCD. Could the problem still be extant? I can't find the actual thread unfortunately otherwise I would link to it.

I created a live USB stick following the instructions at [URL] installing openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-x86_64-iso and booting a Motion LE1700. openSUSE works great but any file I create is lost after I reboot. I created the second partition with the script listed the instructions. Is there any anything else to do to make the live system mount the second partition?

Could someone recommend a simple (non-graphical) distribution that fits on a USB stick, boots without HD access, providing the functions of Super Grub Disk. I find the instructions for creating a Super Grub USB confusing. Even the CD version has cryptic operating instructions. Yes I know there is always Knoppix, but it is graphical (slow loading) and lacks the grub manipulating functions.

I downloaded openSUSE 11.3 to my MacBookPro, whose disk drive has been broken for some time now. I want to install to new msi cr610 laptop that shipped WITHOUT windows. I could order the box with an install disk and printed manual, but if there's any way of creating a bootable USB stick from the download I did to my mac, that would be great.

I have no clue why KDE is doing this, but whenever I reboot the system, the resolution resets to 1024x768. I really need to stop it from doing this. Also, Sax2 doesn't seem to be working and there is no xorg.conf file that I can see of.

When I plug in my microSD into my usb adapter I get an error message. 've seen lots of posts about this error message but everything I've read has been way over my head.

I need some help to set up a bootable USB stick. I have an USB stick, 3.7 gigs big, on which I want to put the OpenSuse Live CD iso, but somehow I am stuck... I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message
Code:
could not find Kernel boot image: gfxboot
Is maybe the boot flag not set, despite the partitionmanager shows it set? Can I set it also afterwards, after I have installed the .iso on the stick (I tried this already, did not change anything)? Or is there something wrong with the .iso?

I want to install 11.3 on a usb flash stick on a netbook.the internal harddisk should be completely unaffected, meaning
- when the usb stick is plugged in, bios should boot 11.3 from the stick
- when the stick is not plugged in, bios should boot from the internal hard disk
I am unsure how the boot options in yast have to be set to achieve that.I changed the order of the harddisks to /dev/sdb (=the usb stick) being the first.I selected /dev/sdb3 (The root partition of the to-be-installed 11.3) as user defined root partition.do I have to select "start from MBR" and/or "start from root partition"? is there more to do to make the usb stick bootable?

-I could use a hand in installing opensuse on my 2009 Intel Macbook
-I need to use a USB stick for the install, my optical drive doesn't work.
-I am trying to reformat my macbook to run 64-bit opensuse 11.3 instead of Apple's proprietary operating system, OS X
-So I started here: Chapter1.Installation with YaST
-And in this article, under section 1.1. Choosing the Installation Media, i found this sub-section: Booting the LiveCD from an USB Stick.
-So i followed those steps to create a bootable USB stick in Terminal, and i got an error in Terminal and was unable to go any further;
-this was the error in Terminal: dd: bs: illegal numeric value
Would anyone know what the error means, and what i should have typed instead? Is it because my USB stick is generic instead of being a specific type like a U3 stick?

I am getting a "No devices matches MBR identifier 0x8c71ad6e!" message along with a reboot in 120 seconds message. This occurs after kernel load and at the start of openSUSE boot.
I have tried both the 64bit and 32bit downloads
openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso
openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-x86_64.iso
I have checksum checked both images after download. I have attempted the install on CD and USB stick with both images and the result is always the same.
I've included a screen image on my site: No Devices Matches MBR Identifier | Badzilla

i need to install openSUSE 11.2 from an USB stick. I followed this article SuSE install from USB drive - openSUSE using the openSUSE-11.2-NET-i586.iso. Unfortunately the kernel provided in this image doesn't load on my target as it needs a few extra modules for its chipset.
Thus i copied our custom kernel (which is verified to run on the target) and its initrd to the usb stick and i also created a new entry in the syslinux.config. The kernel loads, but then it can't find the root device.Does anybody know, how i need to configure the initrd to make the USB stick the root device?

I'm new here, an Ubuntu user who would try Opensuse for a while. That is if I'm able to launch the thing !
I'd like to create a Live Usb Stick to test it and install it if I like it but it doesn't seem to work.
I tried the website method, using "Win32DiskImager.exe" but the program doesn't work for me (WinXP) : it looks like it's writing but when the "Done" message is prompted, I'm unable to access the usb key, Windows says it's not formatted. That doesn't look right...
I tried with LinuxLive Usb Creator but the boot process fails and Universal-Usb-Installer doesn't offer an Opensuse option.
Is there another way to install the distribution on an USB stick ? I could still try through Ubuntu but that would be quite surrealistic.

I've been trying to figure out how to run/install openSUSE from a usb stick for several days. I downloaded the 11.4 .iso from distrowatch & used the following command in Linux Mint to put it on the usb stick.
Code:
sudo dd if=openSUSE-11.4-KDE-LiveCD-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdc
It gets to the loading screen and get stuck. It has a small bar going across, that never finishes. I've hit escape to try and get some info, but don't know what I'm looking for and it's too much to write down. I did notice there were several I/O errors. I did check the usb for defects and it returned ok, and the md5sum was correct.
I've also tried safe settings which takes me to a blueish/black screen and stays there. No ACPI starts to load and then drops to a shell.
how to get this accomplished? I've installed many Linux OS's and I've never had this much trouble.
ps. I"ve read the "please read" pre installation page on here, and things just don't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I've put openSUSE several times in USB flash drives. I've used the old method with dd ... and the new one with dd_rescue ..., shown in SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE This way a partition is created (sdb1 or sdc1 or ...), with the Linux file system (ID: 83). One of the problems of this system is that all the data of the pendrive is deleted. Another problem is that sometimes openSUSE doesn't load completely and I cannot use it. And another of the problems is that even if I create another partition (for example to make the Live USB persistent and "remember" the configuration of my computer) and I put some of my photos, songs, films there when I plug the pendrive in a computer running Windows XP I cannot access the data. (What about Vista and 7?)
Other Linux distros can be put in pendrives using the FAT file system (for example W95 FAT32 (LBA), ID: c). This way my personal data or files (photos, documents, ...) can be opened from a computer running Windows XP (and the personal data is not erased when putting the Linux in the pendrive). So I would like to know how to create a Live USB drive with personal files that are avaiable for many Operating Systems, including Windows XP. Perhaps the solution is to put openSUSE in a FAT file system, or put it in Linux file system but create another partition with FAT file system (for this openSUSE should avoid the 1st partition, sdX1, that should be for the personal data, so Windows XP can access it).

I created Live USB with OpenSUSE 11.3 using "hard way" method from FAQ, i.e. using dd command. Now I want to delete OpenSUSE from USB stick. I have Kubuntu installed, so I follow the steps described in here, but I can only create 1Gb partition on my stick while it has 2Gb capacity. KDE Partition Manager also only shows 1Gb on the USB stick. What is going wrong?
PS. Similar issue is described in [URL]..But mine is slightly different.

I have an very old computer who I want to have som a server. The OS who is installed now i Windows 95.
Hardware:
- MMX 200 Mhz
- 160 Mb Ram
- 2113 MB HDD (bad shape)
- Network card 10/100
- 2 USB 1.0
- CD
- Floppy
I wonder if I can install debian on it with a CD, who install it on a 16 GB USB-stick 2.0.
I wonder to if i can make so Debian takes like 20 MB in Ram or less? I will run it textbased.
I'd seen here that Debian must have at least 64 MB in Ram http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i ... n#id321935
But it's that true? I want a Debian who take ram like Damn Small linux.
The computer shall have ONE function. Run a tiny python script. It will read over 200 pages every 30:e second textbased. Thats what the python program will do. I must have internet connections.
