OpenSUSE Install :: Kdesu Not Working After Upgrade From 11.2 To 11.3?
Jul 29, 2010
After I upgraded my suse 11.2 to 11.3 (via zypper dup, all worked well), kdesu is not working anymore. A "kdesu -c /sbin/yast2" for example will not produce any output in the terminal.

I've recently installed from scratch Suse 11.2, and I'm having a bit of an issue with kdesu. Basically everytime I try to start an application using kdesu (e.g. Yast), the windows where to put the password appears, but when I click on OK, or I press enter nothing happens, the windows stays where it was, and of course the program does not start. The same issue occurs when I type the password to open kwalletmanager, I suppose the two things are connected.

I'm on KDE 4.4.4 and kdesu doesn't use sudo -- at least it's still asking for a password when I have the appropriate NOPASSWD line in /etc/sudoers (checked with command line). I'm following instructions here, Default kdesu to use sudo and not su | Free Techie Blog

On my desktop PC I have openSUSE 11.2 installed but this os as screwed up. For example: the mouse's left button not reacting at all not in GNOME nor KDE. So I fought to upgrade to 11.3 but my question is how can I do it without losing my data and settings. I have there a TexLive working environment and I don't sure I will able to do it again on new installation.

Last night I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop and now X has stopped working. I can go into run level 3 OK.
I have tried removing the xorg.conf file, using a copy of the install xorg.conf. I have also tried reinstalling the ati drivers
-rwxr-xr-x 1 readyp home 101178081 2010-08-07 23:45 ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run
-rwxr-xr-x 1 readyp home 103164399 2010-08-29 21:25 ati-driver-installer-10-8-x86.x86_64.run
the ATI drivers stop at 75% and do not complete.
If I go into run level 3 and run startx the screen goes black and all the keys stop working (Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc..)
I can attach the Xorg.0.log if you like, but it does not look strange.
I am sure the hardware is OK as I have my system dual boot with 11.2 and 11.3.

Not sure but has support and updates for 11.2 come to an end? Every monday morning i make sure i'm upto date with updates etc. This am i get a message saying "repo not available" and having looked online to see if the directory openSUSE_11.2 exists, it doesn't.
At the same time loged in as a std user i regularily offer the command kdesu kwite. the command is accepted without error and the cursur returns on a new line as expected but kwrite doesn't start. I'm guessing that my last update has left me with a broken OS. It doesn't seem very long at all since i installed 11.2!

it seems that kdesu either isn't installed or isn't enable in squeeze, or something. Anyone know how to get it working? when trying to launch dolphin:
Code:
lain@debian:~$ kdesu dolphin
bash: kdesu: command not found
Code:
root@debian:/home/lain# apt-get install kdesu
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package kdesu is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package 'kdesu' has no installation candidate
Using squeeze 64 amd64, with KDE. I just need to launch the nvidia settings gui as root.

I installed SuSE 11.1 again because of the higher resolution. Installed manually the latest Adobe Flashplayer and all worked well. Now I installed Firefox 3.6 and it also works well except for the flashplayer. I cannot reinstall the player because it is already installed.
hans@linux-acry:~> rpm -qa | grep flash
flash-plugin-10.1.102.64-release
pullin-flash-player-11.1-1.1
flash-player-10.1.102.64-0.1.1
libflashsupport-1.2-4.20
Is there a way to make the player work in the new version FF3.6 or must I de-install and the install again?

I have an intermittent problem with kdesu not starting. I can boot and start kde4 and kdesu will perform properly for the full session. If I reboot, there is a chance kdesu will not work at all that session. Yesterday just restarting KDE4 was sufficient to get it back, but today it took two machine reboots.
When it fails it just hangs with no indication and nothing in /var/log/messages.
I had no problems with the previous kernel, 2.6.34-gentoo-r6. I just moved to 2.6.34-gentoo-r12 adding nfs.

I can work around it for now if I have to, but it's a weird and annoying bug. Basically, since installing openSUSE 11.3 RC1 I've been unable to use the 0 key on my numpad. The rest of the numpad functions correctly, it's just the 0 key and it is in both numlock on and off modes (not that I ever use it in off, but I tested anyway). This is the relevant output from xev:
Code:
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5e00001,
root 0x1ad, subw 0x0, time 3291105, (574,178), root:(588,243),
state 0x0, keycode 87 (keysym 0xff9c, KP_End), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:

system:
destop
openSUSE 11.4 KDE
single wired network connection
running as a headless server
upgrade from 11.1
Problem: I had a bunch network services running under 11.1 with KDE. Now after upgrade to 11.4 full network functionality is broken. I was using ifup but now is broken. Between ifup and NetworkManager I can demonstrate the full required range of functionality but not all at the same time (the union of functionality of each provides the full required functionality, but not individually). WOL does work in all cases.
With 'ifup', it seems that everything is 'working' as before, but services are broken when accessed from outside. eth0 up and fuctioning with statically assigned IP. Outgoing connections seem to work - I can browse the web. But trying to access services from outside is broken. VNC is rejected. Connecting to SMB shares reports login error. TFTP doesn't respond. SSH connection is rejected.
Although sometimes it will get in a state that everything except VNC works (connects but then is dropped upon login with "Error while waiting for server message") but I can't consistently reproduce this state other than it seems to happen after some extended period of time.
I have verified the firewall is off and apparmour is off.
On the other hand, everything works with 'NetManager' (both KDE and Plasmoid) with no other changes. The problem here is that it does not seem possible to set a static IP address - eth0 doesn't show up in the list of wired interfaces to be able to select and edit. That's problem 1 - I need a static IP. (I suppose I could reserve an address at the DHCP server, but a static IP works 100% to get the right address). The other problem is that neither NetManager starts at boot and only start _after_ login at the console - that won't work as I never log in at the console. (I suppose I could set it up to login automatically into a console or something but I would rather not)

With Slackware 13.1 I decided to switch to Xfce, but as I like Konsole I'm using it under Xfce. I like to have Konsole being fired up with root privileges, so I added Launcher to Xfce panel with command as follows:
Code:
kdesu -c "konsole -e /bin/bash -l"
Now, when I open the Konsole with this Launcher everything is fine, I can run commands as the root user. But if I try to use tab completion in bash, the CPU usage suddenly goes very high. I found that the process causing this problem is:
Code:
dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
and it is owned by root. When I kill this process the CPU usage gets normal, but I'm not able to run Konsole with the Launcher any more. The only way to get it back is to kill all the kdesu (owned by me) and dbus processes (owned by root). I also noticed that normal user (that is me using Xfce) has also exactly the same dbus process running, that is
Code:
dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
BTW, this doesn't happen when I run xterm or Termianl. Also, using
Code:
kdesu dbus-launch konsole
gives the same odd effect. So I'd like to ask how can I solve this problem? I'm running Slackware 13.1 with Xfce 4.6.2 built with Robby Workman's SlackBuild [URL] with the source code modified so it runs KDE4 services (kdeinit4 and krunner) instead of KDE3 services (kdeinit and dcop). I have also my own custom kernel, but I think it's not relevant in any way.

I had a working setup of opensuse 11.0, dual booting using grub installed on the home partition. I tried to install 11.3 from the coverdisc of linux format (LXFDVD136). It took 5 goes before the install succeeded. Mostly stopping at the "boot installed system" stage. I put 11.3 on a formatted partition in the same place as 11.0, and put grub there too.
The system will not boot without assistance. I have to use a supergrub disc and tell it which partition to boot. If I use boot linux from supergrub I get the Grub error message 15 file not found. Supergrub CAN find windows and it boots with the win command. Automatic and yast initiated attempts to check for software upgrades are blocked by the application with pid 4587.

It's time to bite the bullet before I run out of security update support in December. I also have a sda that is starting to show signs of possibly failing soon when I run smartctl -H. What I want to do is mirror my existing sda with pmagic and upgrade to 11.3. How much trouble will I have going the upgrade route over doing a clean install and trying to import all my Thunderbird/firefox etc data to it with 11.3 and KDE 4.X?

I have a VPS with SUSE 11 64-bit installed on it.This as it turns out is 11.1.On looking at the repository it has none listed, so getting updates is kinda hard. I added the 11.1 repository, or what I thought was it, but it tells me it can't update as it needs an x64 installation.I've tried changing the repositories to 11.2, but get the same message, that it needs an x64 installation.I'm aware it's best to upgrade with a fresh install off DVD, but this is something I can't do with a VPS.
1) Is it possible to upgrade to 11.2 or 11.3 from 11.1 .. I know it's not overly advised, but is there a way to do it?
2) What's the actual requirements for these or what repositories should I be pointing to? Because, I'm already on 64-bit, so I don't get why they wouldn't work.
3) Is there any issues with staying on 11.1? And if I do, then what repositories should I be using?

I have been using OpenSuse 10.3 for years. Now decided to upgrade to 11.3 (current latest). My current box connected and configured with so many peripherals and software:
1) DLink wireless router,
2) HP Printer (networked),
3) Cannon scanner through USB,
4) Zoiper VOIP telephony application,
5) etc. etc.
my question is whether it is recommended to upgrade straightforward from 10.3 to 11.3 ? Is there any known issues that I might be encountered after upgrade installation (e.g. loosing any previous data, configuration etc.).

With upgrade from 10.2 to 11.3. I burned the iso and chose upgrade option (because when I installed last time it didn't set up the boot management properly to boot into winxp, so I eventually had to reinstall windows).
Upgrade seemed to work ok, but when it first booted it couldn't load the filesystems properly. I mostly fixed this by editing fstab. Now it boots fully into runlevel 5 and congratualtes me, but I'm left at the command line with no GUI (i use Gnome).

I'm currently running opensuse 11.3 with Gnome and I downloaded the 11.4 iso yesterday and was considering doing an over-the-top upgrade. But I've been browsing through the forums and it looks like a lot of people have been having issues with 11.4.
So what is the general consensus on 11.4 so far? Is it recommended to stay with 11.3? If I do try to upgrade, what types of "gotcha's" am I likely to experience.
And since 11.4 comes with LibraOffice but 11.3 has OpenOffice, will it automatically remove the old and install the new or should I manuualy uninstall OO first?
