OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 On Compaq ML370 G3?

Dec 26, 2010

I have a problem with installing OpenSUSE 11.3 on my server Compaq ML370 G3.4 gb memory
and 6 drives, all at 36,4Gb(scsi)On the server it is the Compaq Smart Array 532 controller.
When i install from the DVD, after i choose the default keyboard, the an error comes up, and it is restarting the installation process. When i use liveCD i can get to the desktop, but then evrything hangs.

I have tryed the SLES 11 SP1 and i think and as I recall i can perhaps manually the drivers to the installation. But my main question is, Is there a way to add the controller drivers in the installation prosess of OpenSUSE 11.3?

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing HP Support Apps On Proliant ML370 G3?

Jun 1, 2011

I acquired an old ML370 Proliant server, and I'm attempting to find a way to control the fan speed, as all three noisy fans are running at full blast, and I had planned to keep this thing in the office, because it has no wireless capability or support.

I know the following:HP has a suite of programs that are variously called Insight Control Manager, Server Health driver, HP-health, hpasm, and a few more I can't remember. Obviously these are different iterations of the same program, but I have been unable to determine which one I need, and I've been completely unable to find a way to install any of them or find the repository that contains them.

The website: Download Drivers and SoftwareIt lists a lot of different Enterprise-class Server OSes, but nothing about Ubuntu or any home server OSes. I've only been at this for a week, so I don't know which of these would work with Ubuntu Server, or how to make them work if their aptitude file extension is not .deb. I'm currently running Server version 10.10, as 11.04 gave me monitor troubles.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 On Compaq 610 Not Booting / Kernal Option Disablemodules=iTCO?

Mar 6, 2010

I am trying to install opensuse 11.2 on my Compaq 610 laptop, I have reformatted the hd and done a clean install of 11.2, however when I boot up the first time (before configuration) it hangs, I have tried both the X64 and the i586 distributions and the only difference is that the X64 distro boots up under failsafe mode while the i586 does not.The problem seems to be at the udev part with the hang up occurring at :

[ 6.002720] b43-pci-bridge 0000:10)00.0: PCI INT A -> Link[C136] - GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
[ 6.096894] iTCO_wdt: Intel TCO Watchdog Imer Driver v1.05
[ 6.096159] iTCO_wdt: Found a ICH8M-E TCO device (Version=2, TCOBASE=0x1060)
[ 6.103458] iTCO_wdt: initialized. heartbeat= 30 sec (nowayout=0)

And thereafter nothing further happens.

I tried the kernal option disablemodules=iTCO_wdt which got me to the next problem on the next line:

[ 5.761939] b43-pci-bridge 0000:10:00.0: PCI INT A -> Link[C136] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10

and it now hangs here

I tried 11.1 and slackware 13 with no problems installs fine and runs fine, on the opensuse site it lists the machine as compatible with 11.2.

Ubuntu :: Installing RAM In Compaq R3000?

Feb 14, 2010

I'm trying to install a 1GB RAM stick into my laptop. The laptop comes with a 2x256MB setup. Only one of the sticks is physically accessible. So the maximum memory in the specs is 1.25GB. The stick is PC2700, same as the old stick. I am sure it is installed correctly. I took all static precautions. The BIOS recognizes the RAM - 1.25GB total. But Ubuntu just won't. I've got both 9.10 x64 and 9.04 x32 installed. Neither will boot. Memtest only shows the 768k of base RAM, and NONE of the extended RAM shows up - not even the initial 256MB.

I tried turning on boot logging, but the /var/logs/boot was still empty. When I turn off the splash screen, I see a whole mess of errors, which basically stem from the fact that there is no extended memory. What the hell is happening? This is the second RAM stick I've tried, so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I only have two days to decide whether to return it!

General :: Partitioning And Installing To Old Compaq Laptop

Nov 14, 2009

I'm new to linux and have an old laptop did clean reinstall windows 98 but no updates, and now burnt iso image to cd on other pc and used it to try running puppy linux 3.01 on the compaq armada laptop (spec 56.0MB RAM, AMD-K6(tm)-III Processor used space 645MB free 3.80GB). I chose this older version as I think I'd read that this is more suitable for older slow computers.

I am interested in running linux fully without windows 98 or with it. Running from CD I have to select Xvesa I think as Xorg didn't seem to work. Tried partitioning but in GParted find myself unable to amend the size of partitions - got yellow exclamation mark next to the partitions. What I see is: greyed out unallocated 7.38MB, then /dev/hda1 yellow exclamation mark filesystem unknown 206.72MB, /dev/hda2 yellow exclamation fat32 4.45GB.

It does not allow resizing when I try. Associated with the yellow exclamation marks is the warning "unable to read the contents of this filesystem! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. I have done a defragment of C in windows already. (Also haven't been able to connect to internet on linnux with my wireless card.)

Hardware :: Installing Memory In Compaq R3000 Laptop ?

Jan 9, 2010

I installed a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM in my Compaq R3000 Athlon 64 laptop.

I am currently running Mint 7 (32 bit), 2.6.28-11-generic.

I removed one of my two 256MB sticks and installed the new 1GB stick.

When I installed the memory, the BIOS was able to recognize it, saying I had 1.25 GB of memory.

However, Linux refused to boot.

When I did a Memtest, I got nothing - it scanned the 768k of system memory in a fraction of a second, and then rebooted. It couldn't see either my new 1GB stick or my old 256MB stick.

Did I install the wrong type of RAM? Was the stick invalid?

Server :: Proliant ML370 Not Booting To O.S?

HP Proliant Server will not boot to O.S. Upon power-up system performs POST and finally starts looking for bootable device...3 are listed CD-ROM, ?, SCSI.
And then falls into a loop here. No errors that I recognize (I'm newbie to LINUX). Server has 6 SCSI drives and using the SMART START CD, are testing ok. I've broken down box to minimum hardware requirements and was even trying to boot in Safe Mode, if there is even such a thing for Linux.

General :: Installing Lucid Lynx Using Live Cd On Compaq Presario SR5010NX ?

May 7, 2010

I have been trying to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx using Live CD on this machine, a compaq Presario SR5010NX, with Celeron D 3.46Ghz CPU. Bios Version American Megatrends, Inc. 5.18, 2007; 2 gigs of RAM with approx. 140 gigs of hard disk space total useable. Has Realtek High Definition audio, graphic chipset Intel 82945G family; Soft data fax modem with smart CP (internal modem). It is connected to my DSL modem/router, Netgear DGN2000, with ethernet cable (as are my other two computers).

I start the installation. Finally the desktop shows up. As soon as I start trying to navigate, my mouse freezes and that's as far as I can go.

Just out of curiosity, I also tried to use my Mint 8 CD. It did the same thing. Gets the desktop up, then freezes. I am so frustrated because I really want Ubuntu on this machine. I planned on wiping out Vista Home Basic and giving the whole thing to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install On Compaq C 505 TU?

May 22, 2010

i've got my friend into trouble in my zeal to wean away my friend from windows. i convinced him to go for a dual boot system of XP and U 9.10. first we successfully installed XP but then got stuck when we were unable to locate the chipset driver - not even the HP website (horrible) had it ! it seemed to offer everything from modem drivers to utilities but there is no trace of the chipset / motherboard drivers. we then tried to install U 9.10 and got an error message in the middle of the installation process. it has been discussed in this forum but without any clear resolution. basically, it said the following -

Code:
[Errno 5] Input/output error This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. btw, all along we suspected that there could be something wrong with the HDD of his computer which is Compaq Presario C 505 TU. i then tried to install U 9.10 completely on the HDD and this time got the same error message! similar problems came up when i tried installing with U 8.10 and U 9.04 we finally gave up but did run a HDD test from within the BIOS (Phoenix). The result was clear and we got the message - "SMART pass". so basically the computer is not working now because there seems to be a problem with the chipset drivers while i can't get any version of Ubuntu to install on the machine

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot - After Installing New Graphics Drivers OpenSUSE 11.4

Jul 14, 2011

I have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.

Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.

I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.

Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.

I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.

In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.

As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.

OpenSUSE Install :: Windows1 / Windows2 / Windows3 After Installing OpenSUSE

Jul 24, 2011

I installed openSUSE alongside Windows yesterday using the default settings. I had the installer automatically shrink my windows partition and create one for openSUSE. When I boot my computer now, the openSUSE bootloader shows up with options to boot into openSUSE, failsafe openSUSE, windows1, windows2, or windows3. Windows1 and windows2 appear to be the same thing - they both boot into windows, they read the same info for the hard drive, they have access to all the same files. Windows3 cannot start and says that the BOOTMNGR is missing. What are these three different windows options, why are two the same, and why doesn't one work?

My Broadcom Wireless Netwerkcard in the Compaq Pressario C500. Has been noticed, and according to the hardware list the drives are active.

My network icon shows up as not working. It cannot find any networks there.

My network is based of 1 D-Link Router 1 desktop pc 2 laptops. One of those laptops is now this Linux test machine. My other pc's do have an Internet connection trough this router, as did this laptop.

Under Linux i cant get it to work yet. I tried most basic stuff, add a network, type in the SSID name, go to security tell it the passcode.

Even tried to do the whole manual ip stuff. Either i got those wrong, or i dont get Linux.

Ubuntu :: HP Compaq Nx7010 Won't Boot After Clean Install

Apr 29, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 from a live cd, on a HP Compaq nx7010! I selected to use the entire drive, so nothing else is on there! The problem is when I start up the machine it wont boot into ubuntu! Instead I get a menu with 4 options:

Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (Recovery mode)
Memory test (Memtest86+)
Memory test (Memtest86+, serial console 115200)

If I choose the first menu option I get the following error:

error: no such device: 07850f66-baab-4a48-B6C4-01268fee1523
Press any key to continue...

Pressing a key gets me back to the menu again! I have tried to install several times, thinking that maybe, just maybe something went wrong with the installation! But no such luck! I have also tried with different flavours such as ubuntu, xubunt and kubuntu with the same results!

Ubuntu Installation :: OFTB Disaster In Getting To Install/run On Compaq 615?

Jul 13, 2010

I'm an absolute newbie to linux/Debian/Ubuntu. Problem: Ubuntu is loaded successfully but does not run - I just get a blank screen.

The machine specs:
HP Compaq 615
Processor AMD Athlon X2 DualCore QL-64
Processor speed 2100 MHz
ROM date 07/17/2009
ROM Revision 68GVV Ver F.04
Video Bios Revision : ATI 05/07/09

History: I downloaded Ubuntu, burnt a CD and it runs fine on my Saraha machine and it ran fine on the HO Compaq as well - from the CD. So I selected install. At the end of install when I had to reboot, the screen was filled with error messages I/O error on sector pages of the messages. Then downloaded the notebook version and again both laptops ran fine from CD. Installed Ubuntu (deleting everything else) and exactly the same problem.

After reading this forum posts I tried pressing F6 and got a screen with options. Selected them all, installed again - but same blank screen problem. Read this forum again - and found lots of posts with the same problem - on the same machine, but it appears no solutions. I'm at the point of walking away, but really would like to give open source a realistic try. I'm afraid to install Ubunto on any other machine as we may end up with nothing working.

Debian :: Squeeze Install Freezes On Compaq Nc6000?

Mar 8, 2011

when I try to install squeeze on my old compaq nc6000 laptop, installation will freeze at "detecting network hardware"; if I skip the networking steps, it freezes at the "detect harddisk" step.

It's the same behaviour, whether I try to install in text mode or graphic mode, expert install, normal install, whatever.

I also tried different debian ISOs. Same thing.

The screen just stays blank (a blue screen that is in text mode). When I press alt-F4 it reads:

Code:
FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!

That message seems to appear each time my installation freezes.

Searching the web for the message yielded known problems with the kernel vfat driver, which will not be solved. However, nobody else out there seems to have trouble getting their installs done.

So here's my question:

Can I assume this behaviour does have something to do with my windows partition?

As in: Once I have removed my windows partition on the laptop, everything will be cool?

Now I know it's not the server, as I have installed other OSes onto it in the past, including an older version of Ubuntu server (9.04), I did try and re-install the 9.04 version but the CD I had was too scratched up and got to a point in the installer (copying files) where it just failed cos it couldn't read the disc.

The specs of the thing are:

Dual PentiumIIIs 1.4GHz
512mb RAM (keep meaning to upgrade it)
3x 18.2GB 10k SCSI HDDs (Storage)

Not sure what else is in there, but the full specs are on the web...
