OpenSUSE Install :: Get The Message That "ifort" Is Not A Known Command?
Jul 26, 2011
I have just upgraded to 11.4 in two steps from 11.2, and it works, except for two problems.
1. I have Intel Fortran installed, but now when I try to compile, I get the message that "ifort" is not a known command. It is present in the man files and I checked that the folder fortvars.sh is present in the directory that the login file .bashrc points to. What might have happened, and what can I do to restore "ifort" without reinstalling Fortran?
2. When I type a text now, the system stops regularly accepting what I type, and I have to click on the place where I am typing in order to continue. This happens aboput once or twice in a given line. What causes this?
I am completely new to linux and am trying to run a Fortran program for class. I typed in "make C=R" and it ran through a long list of things and then came up with that error.
After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?
Im trying to instal Sun Virtualbox but when download completes and I click on install I get the following error>>Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) I wont even bother with this software if there are others out there that are as easy to use. I used it on Windows and thought it was great ! (thats how I eventually switched to Linux, by using it virtually at first)
I am using 11.3 on one machine and 11.2 on the other (a netbook). 11.4 won't install on either and 11.3 on the netbook fails to install as well.
I am using the same setup as I have always used when both systems ran 11.2 (details below) but now I can only mount a drive in one direction. In the other direction the mount command gets stuck with no error message until it eventually times out. I can ping and ssh the machines from each other without difficulty.
Even in the direction in which the mount apparently works (11.2 mounting a drive on the 11.3 machine) when I try to copy files across nothing actually happens.
exportfs -a was run successfully on the exporting machine, and nfsserver is running on both machines as does nfs client.
The exporting machine is 192.168.1.102 (eeelinux) and the other machine is 192.168.1.101 (nina).
Details: The /etc/exports file on the exporting machine (192.168.1.102) looks like this: eeelinux:/home/naima # more /etc/exports # See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file. # This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to # other computers via NFS (Network File System).
This is an example of the error I receive when trying to do an update via YaST, YaST2, or zypper. Basically, curl is broken. With out it functioning normally, I can't use openSUSE's update mechanism to fix my system. Need to find a way to manually fix / upgrade curl. There was an error in the repository initialization.'Updates-for-openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0': [|] Valid metadata not found at specified URL(s)History:

I'm having an issue when I'm trying to install SuSE linux onto my desktop.I go through all the steps and everything looks okay, but when it starts to install the packages, I get an error message that basically says:kernel.desktop - unable to install, exit status 127.I have a ATI X1950 video card in the computer, as well as a AMD 64 FX CPU in the system.
I just downloaded intel's fortran compiler, ifort. However, I seem to have to add it to path for every single terminal I open using:
Code: source <install-dir>/bin/ifortvars.sh <arg>
I immediately think that there should be a way of doing this automatically at startup. However, this isnt just pointing to where ifort is, but running a shell script, which evidently only affects a single terminal session.
Whenever our computer goes into sleep mode/screensaver under my wife's login, it stalls and will not wake up. Doesn't happen under any other user logins (go figure ). While trying to troubleshoot that issue, I reviewed the system log via YaST. I got a LOT of Apr 11 15:25:52 linux-d8dy kernel: sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.
And by a lot, I mean it is every second. I don't have anything looking for a CDROM file that I know of. Can someone tell me what is causing this? Is there a way to make it stop?
I was looking to install the message passing library MPICH2. In yast with my repos, only mpich 1 comes up. I tried looking for unofficla repos that had it,a nd in fact google threw up a user called Rotkraut's repor directory, but thought he google search engine could see it, I couldn't. So I went over to the mpich website and saw that several rpms were available for different version of fedora. Is it useful to try those? And if so, which version? Fedora 10? Fedora 11? Fedora 12?
When i shutdown my SuSE 11.2 box with all current updates i have started to notice an error message.Something about failed to unmount, trying remount as read only or something like that. The trouble is its almost the very last message that appears and its not on the screen long enough to read properly.Somewhere is there a logfile that i can recover this error message from so that i can make some sort of an attempt to resolve the issue, post the whole message here in more detail?
Using Yast2 I have been able to change the login screen from the default SUSE theme to the "circles" theme. I would like to change the welcome message from "Welcome to 'hostname'" to something more inviting, say: "A Warm Welcome to OpenSuse Linux".
I've been getting an error message at login that .ICEauthority cant be written to. If I look with nautilus permissions it shows owner is root with read and write permissions -rw------- 1 root root 13430 2010-11-21 18:40 .ICEauthority. Should this file be owned by root or the user ?
Recently, for whatever reason (I am led to suspect a bad hard drive), Windows 7 failed to boot even in safe mode so I decided to just use a clear hard drive and install a far less troublesome OS, so I decided to try to use openSUSE. I used a backup laptop to download and burn the 4.7 GB release. Problem is, I haven't a clue how to get it to work. I thought just placing the burned DVD in when booting would be enough, but the BIOS keeps telling me it fails to launch from CD. Luckily, I had enough foresight to download a live CD just in case. I was able to install from the live CD, and when I checked the DVD, I was able to access all the content.
But I haven't a clue how to use it to upgrade/install all the extra software. Also, I should add I am completely new to this whole thing. While I have used Linux before, for the most part others dealt with all the administrative aspects of ensuring the system actually ran/had the needed software on it. Finally, I have one major restriction placed on this whole issue. I live out in the middle of no-where and the only internet I can get is limited to 200MB a day (I downloaded the CD/DVD elsewhere, but normally don't have a chance to do that). As such, being able to install from the DVD and not needing to download much software would be nice.
My son wants to install Wintendos so that he can play starcraft 2 on my new comp. But it doesn't seem to work. Every time I try to install it the install breaks down with an error message like, no boot disc/media can be found. (This is after the install has started, a couple of minutes in.) I suspect that Microsoft doesn't support usb 3.0 in their native distribution of win7, not sure though. And that my comp only has usb 3 ports. How do I check what kind of hardware my comp is packing, specially USB ports.
been a fan of openSUSE for years now and peridocially go back and forth between Suse and Windows. However, I'm still an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to this stuff. Well, I bought a netbook (Acer Aspire ONE) several months back and loved Win 7 (a first for me). However, like all Windows, they all go down the crapper. So I'm wanting to completely wipe out Windows and go all Suse on my netbook. So I downloaded KDE Live and "burned" it on my USB. BTW, the image writer that are in the directions only writes, .raw files not .iso. I had to use a third party software.I then went into my BIOS and put the USB drive first on the booting list, and then restarted. Right off the bat I get the error message.Could not find kernel image: gfxbootAll I want to do is install openSUSE on my netbook
I have installed 11.2 from OpenSuse DVD on a clean partition. The problems I am having are: Updater Applet - it keeps trying to do the update and fails with the message: DBus error: Unable to get transaction id from packagekit. svn. I am trying to understand how to run svn client. I found installation instructions here. However, running the command zypper install subversion produces following error message: zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.619: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.
I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).
thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.
Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!
I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.
*edit Nevermind I think I found it on YAST * I have been having trouble finding the "make command":If 'make' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this: cnf makeI need to install 'make', 'g++', and all other building tools for suse.
I have a Chrome OS .iso that I can booting from CD but only in text mode [the computer has issues] and I want to live install it to the hard drive, but all I have is the linux prompt. Is there a command to do that? I tried install, but I still don't know what to do.[I'm fine with a complete install overwriting everything]
Following the Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide (11.2) guide, I added the packman repository.
Then when clicked OK to update the repos list, I get this message. What should I do? For now, I clicked "Do not import".Generally speaking, when something similar appears, how would you know to trust a resource for providing software?
I was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work. i have 2 window partition(1 for windows and 1 for data).i do,nt want to format 2,nd partition.
How can I installed windows? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.
I have a problem with linux, I got the message "configure can not find x11 libraries" while I was installing xvista program on suse 10.3, Do you know what is the problem?
I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 and every time that I su in as root and run a command, I get a little message after saying: "You have mail in /var/mail/root" And in fact, I do have mail in there, it's mail that I would like to keep for future reference. How can I suppress the message though?
I am unable to update apt-get and I am unable to install any software. The following message when I use the sudo apt-get update command: W: GPG error: [URL] maverick Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783 W: Failed to fetch [URL] Hash Sum mismatch E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
When I for example try to install the gcc I also get weird feedback: gcc is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. I thought it was that they where already installed on the comp, however, the computer keeps telling me that gcc is not installed. I am not quite sure what to do. I am using the latest version of ubuntu (10.10).
