Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Installer Failed To Install On HDD With Four Partitions

Jul 2, 2010

HDD with four partitions: Three DOS bootable primary partitions are located in the head, and the residual extended partition is divided into several logical drives.

1st trial: 10.04 installer recognized the last largest logical drive for system installation, but installer truncated the extended partition, and created the "terrible" 5th primary partition at the end of the HDD. GParted and other utilities cannot access to this 5th primary partition. (So, I restored the lost partition table on the HDD manually by MBM. But several OS were broken.)

2nd trial: To avoid making this "terrible" 5th primary partition, I located the largest logical drive for installation at not of the end.10.04 installer recognized this logical drive, but failed again.I tried GParted. but also failed to formating to ext4.Maybe, 10.04 installer failed at this formating step. Logical drives are not supported in 10.04 ?

I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Here are my partitions on sda:

Software :: Mod The Installer From One Distribution To Another?

Mar 30, 2010

Is it possible to mod the installer from one distribution to another? For instance i prefer Mandrake's or Pardus's installer's partitioners to Debian's. They are graphical and seem to be more intuitive to me. I've reading up on Linux installers, and I think it would be really cool to could create a mash up of sorts, take the best of installers from each distro and make a new one. Or maybe port(there must be a better word), your favorite installer onto your favorite distribution. Imagine installing Debain via YALI

I know it'll take a lot of work, YALI is made using Python and Qt, d-i uses Gtk (for the graphical frontend to cdebconf). Besides, installers are among the most critical components in the whole setup, i mean a broken installer would mean lots of work for the users and consequently for the dev community. Plus the package management systems differ from distribution to distribution. I guess i am looking for thoughts on this, this isn't exactly a standard question

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Server - Load Installer Components From CD Failed

I recently brought home an old Compaq server from work. I was told that it works fine. When I brought it home, I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 server from a cd. While it's trying to install, I get the message "Installation step failed. An installation step failed. You can try to run the following item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Load installer components from CD." I turned off the computer and tried it again several times. Each time the same message appears.

Debian Installation :: Wheezy - Installer Failed On Grub

Nov 23, 2014

I am installing Whezzy and the installer failed to install grub on the MBR of /dev/sda

My disks are
- /dev/sda : the flash drive with the debian ISO
- /dev/sbd : a small SSD for the / partition (sdb1)
- /dev/sdc + /dev/sdd : a software RAID-1 array with LVM for /home, ...

Grub fails to install on /dev/sda which makes sense since this is the flash drive containing the Debian ISO so no MBR.

I already tried to run grub-update manually on /dev/sdb (with chroot /target grub-install --no-floppy --force "/dev/sdb" ).

It works but the system is not directly bootable. I had access to a second PC to read the grub documentation so was able to boot and to fix my system but this is annoying.

Is it normal to see my flash drive as /dev/sda? Could it be that my flash drive is incorrectly detected as a HD?

Is there a way to force the installer to install grub on /dev/sdb?

Returned an exit status of "10". I don't know what that means. I could really use some help, because I just installed UT2K4, and without the driver, I can't play it. I'm running the latest release, as noted in the thread title. Dunno if it helps, but it was a clean install, because an alternate iso upgrade failed and mucked up 10.04.

Debian Installation :: Fresh Install - Upgrade To Frozen Squeeze Distribution

Sep 2, 2010

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.

After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

Ubuntu :: NVIDIA: Failed To Load The NVIDIA Kernel Module?

Aug 31, 2010

After a lot of trial and error, this is what worked for me (I have updated this thread following [URL]):

- Download the latest NVIDIA driver from www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html

- In the terminal cd to the directory where you downloaded the driver package (e.g., $ cd Downloads)and make it executable (e.g., $ sudo chmod +x ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run)

- Edit blacklist.conf $ gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Fedora Installation :: Nvidia Graphics Driver - Error: GlXCreateContext Failed

May 8, 2009

I am using fedora10 in my notebook. I installed nvidia-graphics driver as follows.

su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-*'

Then i installed kmod-nvidia with yum su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia' When i tried to open NVIDIA control panel, i got a message that nvidia-driver should be configured. Then i issued the following command as root.
nvidia-xconfig. The i rebooted the system. Now in the boot menu, i see two kernel informations as follows

Fedora (2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686)
Fedora (2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.PAE)

If i boot my linux with first one, x windows starts, if i boot with the second one (previously default), the x-windows is not opening. Why this happens? So i booted my system with first option in the boot menu. The system booted and x.windows started but i am not able to use any software that uses opengl window. Ubuntu :: NVIDIA Installer Can't Find Kernel Source

Mar 7, 2010

First my uname -a

Code: Linux quad 2.6.33 #1 SMP Sun Mar 7 18:22:02 CET 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux I am using Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.0. I am asking my questions here, since this involves non-free drivers. I succesfully installed the nvidia driver on the default kernel. But the default kernel has removed all support for DVB USB sticks, so I had to compile my own kernel.

I got the newest version from kernel.org. Saved the archieve to /usr/src/. unzipped the file in the directory (so my kernel source is now in /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/.) Made a symlink with ln -s linux-2.6.33 linux. I compiled the kernel succesfully. Did a "make install" and "make modules_install" and ran "update-grub". Restarted system. Cd'ed to my source directory and ran "make headers_install" succesfully. Looking at my timestamps, it looks like the kernel headers has been installed to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/usr/include/linux/. I downloaded the latest x86_64 drivers from nvidias website. Went to console 1 and closed up X. If I start the installer without any parameters (sh NVIDIA*.run) I get the following error:

Code: ERROR: Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in '/lib/modules/2.6.33/source'. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option. lib/modules/2.6.33/source is a symlink which point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33

I get the same error if using --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux/, /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/ and similar options which link to this directory through symlinks. If I use --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.33/usr/include, I get the following error:

Software :: Install A Vendor Provided Driver In Fedora 9 Kernel?

Sep 30, 2010

I am trying to install a vendor provided driver in Fedora 9 kernel 2.6.27.25-78.2.56.fc9.x86_64. Apparently the vendor stopped officially supporting Linux a number of years ago, so there were a few things I needed to change in the source code to get it to compile, now I'm trying to install it. Make runs successfully, but when I try to "make install" this happens:

Code:
# make install
Unloading any instances of foo module
Loading new foo into running kernel
insmod: error inserting 'foo.ko': -1 Operation not permitted
make: *** [install] Error 1

I've tried finding a solution via Google but it seems that the majority of people solved this problem using sudo, but I'm using su already and this still happens. I've also gone into make menuconfig and modules are enabled. I have access to the makefile and all the source code, so if something needs to be done there I can do it. If anyone has any ideas, please don't leave out any details; I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Linux
