View 14 Replies View RelatedI have installed 1tb hard drive and would like to partition as follows:
1) / - 20g
2) /swap - 6G
3) /photos /150g
4) /videos /500g
5) /audio /300g
After 2-3 partition an extended partition automatically created in which I am not able to create specified capacity i.e., say I want 150g of /photos partition, the /videos partition is automatically reduced and a free space at the end appears. Some free space is always there which i am not able to understand. Nevertheless i clicked to create, but I get an error viz. 'device not created'.
I killed Win XP awhile back, but there are a couple games I need to format for Ubuntu to use, using XP to get there.
I have Ubuntu LTR. I formatted disk to install XP. I installed XP. I can't boot into Ubuntu anymore unless from a live CD. From Live CD, I can see my Ubuntu is still there, but from XP, disk manager it shows that space as empty (free). How can I dual boot, now? Please don't tell me I need to reinstall Ubuntu, I may cry. Any help is appreciated and my apologies if my search didn't get me the answers, the other similar problems I saw were in reverse order (Linux onto drive after XP).
I have a NAS from WD that runs some stripped down flavor of linux. The NAS has one USB port at the back which can be used to expand the storage. If I plug in an external disk formated in either NTFS or HFS+ then the system automatically mounts the disk and shares it over samba. If I plug in a disk that is formated in ext3, the disk is recognized but that's about it. It doesn't mount or get shared or anything. I have tried asking WD about this and I have tried asking google. But after two days of searching I am turning here for some more expert advice.
Here is what I've managed to figure out so far.
If I check dmesg before and after plugging in the ext3 usb disk I have found out that these lines are added to the log:

I have tried googleing those last two lines but I haven't found any info that I can make any sense of.
If I run the command "mount -a" I get the following messages from the shell: "mount: Cannot read /etc/fstab: No such file or directory"
Hover I am able to mount the ext3 disk manually. First I get this info from fdisk

This makes the usb disk visible in the shell, but since this is a NAS, it is kinda useless as long as it doesn't show up in samba.
Since I'm pretty new to linux I don't know what to try next so I'm hoping for some advice as to what I can do to make the ext3 usb disk automount.
After I formated my windows partition using GParted it became Unallocated and moved under Extended partitions. I can't create the unallocated partition as primary one, or drag it out of the extended ones. I tried GParted live CD also, but nothing worked.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a second hard drive in my desktop and both the main dirve and second drive are 250GB. I use the second drive for backups, both manual and using back in time. The other day I noticed that the second drive was formated in FAT32. If I go to disk utility and look at the drive it says:Usage:FilesystemPartition Type:Linux (0x83)Type:FAT(32-bit version)Is this ok? I thought in Linux it should be Ext4. So far its been working fine for a while now but if I need to move my files and re format it to ext4 and move them back I would rather do it now when there is less data on the drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 12 since 2 years lately, I really enjoy this S.O., it's quite robust and wonderful, but a couple of months ago it is really slow to boot up when startup the computer, I've checked everything, but seems to be ok, I had a partition lost arround that date, but recover successfully, it happens when I run gparted that It cannot see partition on my 500 GB disk, but still boots up. When running Mandriva live cd, it can see (?) all partitions on that disk, even with Fedora Dolphin I can access this partitions. What could it be?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have already set up, with disc partitioning software (Acronis) , a ext2 partition and a swap space. I have two hard disc drives arranged in a raid 0.
When I try the Debian network install, I am asked to create a partition. The only option that I am given is to partition the whole disc. I most certainly do not want to do this because of all of the information and programs that I have on the other partitions.
I remember from the past that we used to use "Fdisk" to manually partition drives. I was not able to invoke it.
So, the basic question is, how do I direct the install to a partition that is already formatted?
I was created one folder in linux with current time was 1978(For example). I was moved this folder to usb(FAT32 file format).While seeing this folder in window its not showing the folder time created time stamp, because the USB file system only support the year after 1980 . But again i am putting the same folder in linux ,its showing the correct time stamp.How is it possible? Because FAT32 only supports timestamp after 1980, but still its showing 1978 in linux system

I was able to create a new partition in my terminal using fdisk.
So basically this is just an additional partition in my currently installed linux (ubuntu). Now my problem is, how can I use that partition or how can I save files or install applications on it?
I tried creating a File system mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb1, and I also mounted it, but when I copy files on the directory where I mounted it, it says "Permission Denied". I dont know if Im doing it correctly though.
Using Ubuntu 10.10 (installed via mythbuntu) I'm unable to read or see files/directories created under Ubuntu. I think it started happening after a reboot to Windows. Some of the directories created under Ubuntu have disappeared completely and some of them produce the following error:

Just to make it worse I copied more data onto the disk from windows so may have lost some it completely. It there anyway I can repair this? When trying to check under Windows it says it can't. Some of the missing files can be reloaded but others can't. Ran chkdsk /f under Windows XP. Some files have reappeared, but there has been a lot of unrecoverable files lost. Conclusion: Ubuntu 10.10 is badly broken for writing to NTFS. As I would like to share between Windows & Ubuntu using the external disk, I'm not sure what to do at this stage.

I want to search an entire subtree of /, in the file system, for all files, with extension html, created on the hard disk. In addition, these have to be the last five created. I think I could split the problem into two parts: (a) Forget about the last condition. Then this is a job for the find command. (b) Sort the output of find using the date as the key, then use 'head' to print the desired output. But even two such simple steps are enough to justify the writing of a shell script. And here lies my weakness.
My script writing knowledge is rudimentary. What's the final purpose? Well, I lately saved four or five LQ pages onto disk containing information I consider valuable to me. But I don't exactly remember where on the disk. Then: either the problem posed is really of a very simple nature or it is not, in the latter case a script being mandatory. One of the algorithm drawbacks (the one described above) is that find may be running a great deal of time. My machine resources (RAM and CPU speed are low) are scarce and there possible are a large number of HTML files on the disk.

I just finished installing Karmic Koala on my computer a little while ago... and I chose to partition the drive manually. My computer has 2 hard drives:

The ext3 partition on the 250GB drive called "datas" is an old partition that I created while I was still using Intrepid... and it works just fine. However the partition called "archives", which I created during the installation of Karmic, doesn't seem to work properly. For some reason I can't write any files or folders on it. Why is that?
I am new to ubuntu! I installed ubuntu and removed all partitions, now I have only one partition with 160 GB, Wanted to install again Xp but my laptop cant boot from CD/DVD, used GParted to create another partition and created one ntfs, but I have now one problem, ubuntu is not starting and I cant boot from CD. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy DVD drive has gone bad and with new Fedora 14 just launched I decided to install the same through the usb flash disk.
First I used dd: dd if=/home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb
It went on nicely and copied the iso nicely. But I could not boot with it.
Second time I tried livecd-tools: livecd-iso-to-disk /home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso /dev/sdb1
It went on nicely, and finally declared something like - usb disk is not live .... But here again when I tried to boot it says MISSING OS. I checked the contents of the flash disk. It contained raw DVD iso image, one images directory, one syslinux directory. I checked the contents of the images directory, and I found it had the install.img. And yes, the /dev/sdb1 is bootable.
Alright, so, I booted using linux live, and was poking around Gparted, and was going to test some things on my extra hdd (80gb, IDE) -I thought that extra hard drive was selected, what I clicked Create Partition Table. Apparently, it was my primary hdd, (250gb Sata, Windows Vista x64) that was selected. I think I may have tried to cancel it after a few seconds, realizing what was happening, but yeah, it now shows the entire hdd as unallocated space. I immediately shut down the computer, pulled out linux live and tried to boot to windows, but I immediately got an error saying the disk couldn't boot, asking for a system disk.
There was a thread with a guy who had a similar thing happen to him, but the thread dropped off... [URL]

Opened testdisk for me, but now that testdisk is open, I'm not really sure what I need to do. I'm guessing that the boot sector on that hdd is gone. Are my files gone forever? There are some files that I don't have backed up on there, that I'm hoping are not gone. I would love it even more if I could somehow just repair that boot sector, and not have to reinstall everything on my machine.
I used gparted to create 60GB free space which I then formatted as ntfs. However,when I go to install XP I get the blue screen of death.I know the XP installation disc is OK.The ntfs partition (sda3) is after the ext4 partition (sda1) - could this be the source of the problem?

The files are khq, khp, kht, an autorun inf file and others. They seem to have been created while I was using ubuntu and even though I delete them,they appear again later. I have googled and have found few information that the files are malware. I will like to know if there is a known issue and solution.
