OpenSUSE Install :: YaST2 Update Conflicts And Inferior Architecture
Jan 22, 2011
When I ran YaST | Software Management | Package | Update if newer Package Available this morning I get this message:
Code:

What is it telling me? What should I do? What are the implications?

I did a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.1 i586. Everything worked fine. Then I used YaST2 Software Management to add a package. Worked fine. Then I did the Online Update to get the Installation up to date. Worked fine so far. I had to restart the Machine because of the Kernel Bugfix Update. Since then, the YaST2 Software Management is not working any more.
When I do start it, it starts the software manager, shows the "Search Phrase" and so on but when I enter a word and press "RETURN" the software manager immediately closes and takes me back to the YaST2 start screen. No messages, no warnings, nothing. With zypper I am able to install software but no longer within YaST2.

I am trying to update Flash-player and yast2-core as prompted by today's update icon.
I am now faced with a loop that goes like this:
1) click on icon
2) window pops up, "2 packages selected"
3) click on apply, subwindow pops up
4) click on continue, "waiting for authentication"
5) after minutes of waiting, click on cancel, nothing happens
6) click on icon killing subwindow
7) now back to 2)
Aborting the process, starting at 1) again, same mess
Conclusions:
a) No idea what was going on
b) Use Yast instead of clicking update icon

When I try to apply the latest updates on my 11.3 system, I get the following Warning. I think this is because I did the "switch system packages" to Packman after I installed it. What is the recommended solution?

About a week ago, I installed all the updates that popped up. I didn't actually look at what was being installed.
Since then, most of the items in the Yast2 Control centre won't run and just pop up an error box with the following (Firewall):

what(): basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid

Some time ago I did an automatic update and after that firefox, thunderbird and yast2 don't start. It's not that there is an error message or sth. Their icons just start jumping and after a while it stops without anything opened. I tried even removing the zilla directories and so on but it doesn't help. Of course I tried to simply reboot the machine and strangely enough, still does not work. Opera works though and I am ok with that, however yast2 not opening is more annoying. I do all the stuff that I want from the console, but of course that's not the point

I've been trying for awhile to install the restricted formats, but when in the download & and install process, YaST2 pops up saying that such and such RPM has failed. I hit ignore, and it happens again and again to all the other packages, bar the odd few that work.

Whenever I tried to install LXDE using the 1-click install, YaST2 just freezes and doesn't respond and doesn't install anything. In fact, YaST2 always freezes whenever trying to install a program with the 1-click install.
So my question is, How do you abort YaST2 from installing because obviously the Abort button doesn't even work! And lastly, how can I install LXDE through the terminal as I always never have a problem installing something through the terminal.

I have problems with running Yast2 under Gnome when I connect via VNC to the computer. The first 20-30 times it worked, but then it simply stopped to work. When switching to another VNC-Server (instead of :1 to :2) it works again for approx. 20-30 times. The behaviour is very much similar to the one described here:
Yast2 startet nicht unter VNC (SUSE 11.1/Gnome)
I use OpenSUSE 11.2 with german language set. The VNC server I use the one that is installed "by default".
When I try to run Yast2 from a terminal under Gnome as normal user I get the following output:
./yast2: Zeile 30: ./lib/YaST2/bin/yast2-funcs: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
./yast2: Zeile 267: set_lang_from_sysconfig: Kommando nicht gefunden.
./yast2: Zeile 192: check_qt: Kommando nicht gefunden.
Qt GUI wanted but not found, failing back to ncurses.

11.3 ; looking to play with DNS; nothing of the kind is showing in Yast networking menus. Checked, and BIND shows as installed. Also, while I'm crying for help: cant see the windows box next to me; can ping it, and could browse to it with File Manager yesterday, but not working today ! Also; I tried KDE desktop (like new things) but it's driving me nuts (menus too small, I lose the choices as I move through submenus) and I'd like to go to Gnome ; how to ?

Whenever I try to install anything from YaST2, it decides to include a lot of extra stuff I don't need. It says it's just added dependencies, but I hardly think the Russian translation for the open office help files counts as a dependency for WINE. This also happens when I try to install the amarok mp3 codec.

This is my second day trying to learn opensuse. My lack of terminology makes it very hard to google for the answers. I need to do this:
opensuse:~ # yast2 install postgresql-server apache2 perl texlive perl-DBD-Pg libapr-util1-dbd-pgsql
I know about yast, however this looks like something that needs to ran from terminal.

I'll get to the point straight away... I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 on a HD that already has Win 7 on it.I left out 15.52 GB of space just to install Opensuse but when I select that partition (which of course is empty) and tell YaST2 to install OpenSuse there it tells me there isn't enough space. Is 15 GB not enough!?inimum requirements where supposed to be 3GB I think...S this is how the disk is devided... Primary partition of 50GB for win 7, 400 of Logic partition for Programs, and supposedly 15GB for OpenSuse...

Yesterday, after I reinstall suse linux enterprise 11 in my note book. I got some error messages. They are :
From Suse linux installing processedacroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm
yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm
After installed suse linux.
error messages for all options in yast2.
The story is when I started installing suse linux, I checked first the live cd and I got message that live cd is okay. But, when the installation process was running, I got 2 messages error. But, the messages were informing me to verified from software management module.
So, my questions are :What are acroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm and yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm and what are they fungtions? If my guess is not wrong, acroread means acrobat reader. Is it true? Where is others place I can download them (no.1,2,3) beside the live cd? Or, if the easyest way is live cd. As yast2 got error, is there an other way I can installed them (no.1,2,3)?

I just installed 11.4 and was adding a new repository which I entered incorrectly. Yast2 complained and did not add it to the repository list. Now when I run Yast2 Software Management.
I get the following error message...
"There was an error in the repository initialization.
Error refreshing service Packman 11.4 (vaval.com - Islam Resources and Information. This website is for sale!
Parse error: repoindex.xml[3] Opening and ending tag mismatch: meta line 2 and noscript"
Since this line does not show up in my repository list I cannot remove it. How do I edit the data file directly and where is it located?

It's been a while since I've use linux (specifically suse). But my wife and I are expecting our first child and our office/second bedroom is now being converted into the baby room. I built the computer that is currently in there and it is a really nice one that I do not want to get rid of. Two 500GB Sata2 drives and 8Gigs of RAM (not to mention my quad-core Phenom AMD processor and sweet asus motherboard) -- I just can't get rid of it. So what I planned to do was turn it into a small home server. I did some research and kept coming back to using opensuse as the server. I read this article The Perfect Server - OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64 [ISPConfig 2] | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials and it seemed to have just about everything I'd like to do (maybe some extras that I don't really need, but might in the future). Everything was going fine until I got to a certain point. The install went fine, and I was starting to customize some of the settings for my own home setup. Now, the problem...
I've gotten to page 3 of the tutorial The Perfect Server - OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64 [ISPConfig 2] - Page 3 | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials
and I am installing packages through yast2, and all the packages installed fine except for 'compat-readline4'. I think this is a form of command line editor or something to do with that. I am sure I am going to need it to finish the server set up, but I can't get it installed anywhere. I've tried to install it by pointing directly to the mirror found at rpm.pbone.net and still I get nowhere.
Yast2 auto refresh seems to fail everytime I run it. Even though I installed all the other packages, I get an error message that says it can't get the medium. When I look at the details of the error it says it can't resolve the host for downloads.opensuse.org.

I was running openSUSE 10.3 using yast2-firstboot and everything worked perfectly. I have since upgraded to 11.2 and after a post on this forum I was able to get yast2-firstboot to run. The control file was moved to touch /var/lib/YaST2/reconfig_system instead of touch /etc/reconfig_system. All is well there and firstboot does run. I have a script that basically sets up the hostname, IP addresses, etc on the machines. This worked in 10.3 but in 11.2 it doesn't execute. I can manually run the script which I have defined in the /etc/sysconfig/firstboot file. The SCRIPT_DIR="/usr/share/firstboot/scripts" I noticed a new entry this file labeled - # Action that should be done after the firstboot sequence finishes.
FIRSTBOOT_FINISH_ACTION="" Should I place my script here? I read the doc and you can use reboot but need my script to run first. To I just put the name of the script or the entire path to the script if that is the place to put it. On a side note. Does anyone know where the default FIRSTBOOT_FINISH_FILE="" is located? I want to use that as a template but change and add a few lines to this. I just can't locate it anywhere on the system.

I ssh to a remote server which is running in SUSE. And I want to install apache2.0 there. Then I used yast2 to install it. But after installing it, I go to the terminal and type" apache -version" to check if apache is installed there. And it said "-bash: apache: command not found". I don't if I haven't successfully installed it, or I have installed it but just haven't put it into PATH yet. So, my problem is that can anyone tell how to check if I have installed it? If I have installed it, then what is the path of the directory it locates? And if I haven't probably installed it, then can you tell me the how I can installed it? And I am asked to install apache mod_wsgi as well.

I am using opensuse 11.3. I am encountering a problem while trying to log in. The problem message was
"could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation"
I tried to solve this problem by following the instructions given in OpenSuSE 11.0 Could not start kdeinit4... i.e., I opened yast2 and then I had to select "software management" from there in order to update all the packages in kde4. But I got another error when I clicked it.
/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2base:/usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2wfm.so.2)
The error list continues. I cannot type whole error list ending with similar wordings as above as am using different computer. I tried to solve this one too by following the instructions in Relocation Error but I could not understand its line "...fixed the problem by taking /usr/local/lib out of ld.so.conf, and then running ldconfig" as am new to linux.
