OpenSUSE :: Plasma Hangs After Login On A Fresh Install?

Apr 19, 2011

I installed openSUSE 11.4 today and I have a problem. After login, KDE Plasma hangs for about 30sec and I can't do anything. The keyboard and the mouse are working, but if I click, I don't get any response only after about 30sec.

This is a fresh install, 32bit, I'm using only the Oss, Non-Oss and update repositories and the system is up to date.

I have an nvidia 9500M GS graphics card, first I thought it is a driver bug, but I tried both the stable 260.19.44 and the latest 270.41.03 drivers, and was no difference.

I made an another user to try with a clean kde, but the same happened.

I have nothing in my Autostart directory, and I cleaned also the /etc/xdg/autostart dir, leaving there only the pulseaudio related files.

OpenSUSE Install :: Plasma-Workspace Crashes On Login?

Dec 22, 2009

After updating some of my packages to the newer versions, I restarted my computer so that I could experience the full effect of the update. When I attempted to login, Plasma Workspace crashes and nothing loads. I am forced to use another window manager to login into the system, and when I investigated into this problem by typing plasma-desktop in the command terminal, I receive this error:

Code:
plasma-desktop(18223) getComponent: Failed to connect to the kglobalaccel daemon QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner", "Could not get owner of name 'org.kde.kglobalaccel': no such name")

explain to me how I can fix this error so that I can finally go back to using KDE4?

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Failed After Fresh Installation?

Jun 2, 2010

I have tried to install openSuse several times and the same problem would persistRight after installation, when the prompt to log in shows up, I enter a username and a password, but it says that login failed. I am sure I type in the correct data as I have written down the username and the password I register during the installation.Also, after the installation finishes, the computer restarts automatically, though instead of restarting it goes into a mode similar to stand by. The screen is blank and the media buttons of the keyboard are lit, but nothing happens, so I just restart manually. Could this have something to do with it

OpenSUSE :: KDE4 - Plasma Crashing After Login ?

Mar 12, 2010

There's just one minor glitch - everytime I log in after reboot, the plasma desktop crashes right at the beginning - a window appears saying something like "The desktop process unexpectedly quit" ( I have a polish version, don't know the exact translation ) and leaves me with a big red button in the middle of the screen ( but the system seems to be fully functional ). When I log out and log back in without rebooting everything works just fine. The error is 100% reproducible. On the other hand - if I log into runlevel 3 first and then start the X manually, then there's no error.

OpenSUSE :: Plasma-desktop Crashes On Login?

Dec 16, 2010

I had openSuse 11.3 KDE4.4.4 installed and used the 1-Click install to get the nVidia drivers. However, this gave me the problems with Amarok and other applications crashing. I switched the system repos to use packman but that didn't help.

The solution on the forums seemed to be either recompile with an old nVidia driver or upgrade to KDE4.5 as most people were reporting to not see it under 4.5.

Upgrading seemed to be the easiest method, especially as there appeared to be a stable repo now.

I upgraded and now plasma-desktop crashes on login! Is getting the old nVidia driver my only option now?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Fresh Install - Thunderbird Hangs

Jul 15, 2011

I backed up my user directory, did a fresh install of 11.04 (old version was 9.10), and then restored my user directory. (User account information, UID, GID, and file permissions have remained the same.)
Thunderbird hangs w/:
futex(0x7f91c3b02640, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL) = ? ERESTARTSYS (To be restarted)
The Thunderbird window never appears.

I have tried removing ~/.thunderbird/ and ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/, to no avail. I have tried creating a new dummy account and running Thunderbird -- that works okay. So this has to be something in my user home area, I just can't figure out what. While I can wipe my home area and start over, I have about 60 other users who are going to face this same issue when I upgrade their machines, so I am desperate to resolve the issue some other way.

Debian :: Jessie Hangs / Freezes After Fresh Install

Dec 8, 2015

I installed Jessie day before yesterday on a freshly formatted partition. After a random time, it hangs. If I am playing music at the time, the music continues for a few more seconds _after_ the mouse and keyboard become unresponsive, if that is useful.

Sine I did not understand how to pick the desktop during the installation, I installed Gnome. Afterwards, I installed KDE. Now I have a lot of Gnome stuff around I don't really need. But they are in principle compatible, right?

This morning, the hang was almost immediate after logging on. Only Iceweasl and Amarok and a Konsole were running. I attempted to start Icedove, when everything hung.

Here is the relevant part of the syslog.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install Of 10.10 Hangs After Reboot?

Mar 30, 2011

I'm on an HP Pavillion dv1000 laptop. I used a live CD to install Ubuntu 10.10 to an external USB hard drive. The install completed successfully, but after a reboot I am stuck on a black screen with a white cursor. Before that I see nothing but the initial HP startup screen. I am able to run the live CD without problems, and I have been running Ubuntu from a 4GB thumb drive (which I installed on using the same live CD that I used to install on my current external hard drive). I had no problems whatsoever running from the CD or thumb drive, so I can't figure out why the external hard drive would be so different.

Debian Installation :: Boot Hangs After Successful Fresh Install

Nov 24, 2015

System is hanging during boot after a successful fresh install via netinstall disk. Never makes it to any GUI or prompt. However, it does still respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL (not completely frozen).Default debian installation with one exception - KDE checkbox was checked for installation. Everything else was default, with "use full disk with GRUB" option chosen.The boot process appears to hang during the service starts. It appears that the start job for "Create Static De..." is not actually ever completing. I don't know how to troubleshoot that any further than I have.

This is running on hardware, it is not a virtual machine. 480GB SSD, i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD R9 390 (I dunno if this is the problem, but it seems a likely culprit).There are no other disks attached. I have verified successful memtest completions (0 failures) and hard disk is intact and working fine (I have swapped for another disk, and the same thing happens as well).

My skill level with Linux is relatively low. I have proficiency using it and programming for it, but not much in the way of troubleshooting/ installation/ drivers.

Here is an album of "screenshots" (phone photos) of the boot sequence in debug: URL....I tried booting straight to console by removing "quiet" from boot options and changing to "text", but it does not alter the outcome in any discernible way.

Ubuntu Installation :: Acer Laptop Hangs After Fresh Install And First Update / Sort It?

Jun 12, 2010

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.

I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.

Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.

So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

Fedora Installation :: Fresh Install Hangs On Boot / Black Screen Blinking Cursor

Aug 9, 2011

After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).

The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

Fedora :: Plasma Hangs For A Long Time?

Aug 21, 2009

The desktop stops working, the panel stops working.. but compositing, desktop cube etc all work fine.I can still launch a program with Alt-F2.When I try and kill it (to restart) using 'killall plasma' / 'kill -9 <pid> / 'kill -15 pid' from a terminal, nothing happens, the process keeps running. If I leave it for about 30 mins it suddenly dies, allowing me to run 'plasma' from a terminal - then everything is back to normal.

If I log out and try to log back in again, I get a black screen. Only way to fix it is either to kill it and wait for 30 mins or so, or totally reboot the computer.Tail of the xsessions error file:

Then I go to crt-alt-F2, and try to "yum install gnome-panel". Then it shows that I don't have any network connection at all, even though I did install my network. I'm thinking of installing F14 now.

OpenSUSE :: Plasma Crashes In New 11.3 Install?

Dec 16, 2010

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.3 last night and so far today I have had TWO Plasma crashes which leave the taskbar in a black color with stripes.

After the first one I located a post on the Web that said to do the following:

logout
Do CTRL-ALT-F1 (this does not work on my system at all, why?)
login
rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*
CTRL-D to logout
CTRL-ALT-F7
Login

I did that and it did not fix the problem. I messed around with the desktop settings and somehow got the task bar back to gray.

Now during a copy of a large number of files from one disk to another with Dolphin, it crashed AGAIN.

So far 11.3 is proving a massive disappointment compared to the 11.0 I had on up to last night. Things are more complicated and clearly not as stable as KDE 3.5.x.

And I'm switching back to Konqueror as the default file manage because Dolphin appears to be unstable at doing a simple task like copying files without freezing.

I also hate the task notifier which during a copy pops up and covers my NoScript bar in Firefox.

do I have to switch to another distro? I really don't want to do that, but so far OpenSUSE 11.3 is a massive problem.

Debian Installation :: After Fresh Install Login Ok But Blanck Screen After

Dec 31, 2010

I've installed a fresh Debian amd64 DVD version on my small HP Compaq 6537s / AMD Athlon X2 / 64. Everything went fine, I rebooted, the graphical login screen appeared, so I thought I will be able at last to run Debian on a computer ...

But then after login, the login Window disappeared, the "Debian" logo too, and... that's all folks! A nice blank screen. But the mouse is still perfectly drawn, so it's kind of weird.

Here's what tells me "uname -a" :

Linux olivierdebian 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Nov 21 09:17:22 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

If I go to CTRL-ALT-F1, i login as root and I do a "/etc/init.d/gdm restart", I have the login screen back and this is once again the same scenario: login => ok => blank screen with mouse properly drawn and the Debian background color still there.

Debian :: Fresh Testing Install: Display 'broken' After KDE Login

Feb 1, 2011

I have downloaded the latest testing image today (debian-testing-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso), install went just fine.

On boot, I get as far as the KDE login screen, where my user and password are seemingly accepted. Seemingly, as after this point, the screen is a complete mess. This 'mess' differs between attempts: it could be full of black and white squares, themselves made up of noise pixels; once it was like a normal screen after it had been through a blender, i.e. bits of the DE but awfully mixed up. (My judgement would be that the video pointers is set to point at the wrong part of memory... or is that my old-school point of view getting in the way? Whichever, it provides you with an idea of what it looks like.)

Running on an Nvidia GTS250 card, with two monitors (2 x DVI).

I have not installed any NV propriety drivers, as this is the first boot(s).

There is no xorg.conf present on the system; and I cannot find anything obvious in xorg.log (but then, I wouldn't know what to look for).

I use grub legacy, from my existing PCLOS partition (though this should not be an issue as I get as far as the KDE login screen, pretty as please).

Regarding the install itself, I took the above mentioned testing image as a way to get Squeeze. I assume this was the right way to do this at current time.

Fedora :: Gnome Timed Login Doesn't Work On Fresh 13 Install?

Jul 28, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Code:
[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=<username>
TimedLoginDelay=3

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=<username>

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.

OpenSUSE Install :: VirtualBox 11.3 VM Plasma-desktop Crashing With 512MB

Jan 18, 2011

I am finding that plasma-desktop crashes on a freshly installed 11.3 64-bit VM in VirtualBox whenever memory is set to 512MB. I created the VM with 1GB, which is overkill for what I am using it for. At that point all was well. After lowing memory to 512MB, it boots and starts to load the desktop, which fails - error log below. Increasing memory to 756MB allows it to load fine again.

I don't really need a desktop environment on this VM, but it seems odd this is happening at all. 512MB should be fine to run a basic VM with KDE and per Hardware requirements - openSUSE 256MB is the minimum, and 512MB is recommended.

While it's not a big deal, I am a bit curious why this really needs 756MB to run a bare bones system and just launch KDE. Really? We've come to that?

Perhaps I just long for the halcyon days when Linux would run, including a desktop environment, on a 486 with 256MB . . .
