Software :: Filter PA/module-alsa-sink.c Messages From Syslog?

May 4, 2009

GNOME has adopted the pulseaudio infrastructure and it has grave errors reading from ALSA sinks. One of the many effects is that every 2 or 3 seconds a 3 line error message is written to the syslog to the effect of 'ALSA woke us up...blah blah blah' and it is filling up everyone's syslog. What I need is a workaround to just stop these messages from being written so I can level set and figure out a long term course of action.

Debian Configuration :: How To Set Up Serial Connection To Get Syslog?

Feb 7, 2010

I have been tol that for debugging purposes it is often useful to have a serial connection to a computer. I have some diskless workstations thats freezes during boot. I guess X has someting to do with this, but I'm not sure. Since the workstations are diskless, syslog is not stored locally so I cant se what is happening after the NiC stops working. When the worstation freezes, screen is going black, all lights on the keyboard turns on, lights on NiC is going black. It is not possible to ping the workstation.

Debian Configuration :: Sieve Mail Filter For Domain Isn't Working

Sep 18, 2015

The first filter does not work, the second does...why?

Code: Select allelsif allof (
                body :contains ["some text", "Some Text"],
                address :domain :is "From" "amazon.de"
            )
            {
                redirect "someemail@gmx.net";
            }
elsif allof (
                body :contains ["some text", "Some Text"],
                address :domain :is "From" "yellowstone.bohlsen.lan"
            )
            {
                redirect "someemail@gmx.net";
            }

I even saved the amazon.de email from thunderbird as .eml and used it as a testmail to check the second filter

Code: Select allcat /tmp/amazon-main | mail mylocalusername@yellowstone.bohlsen.lan

that worked without problems.

the amazon email address that is sending me mails is:

Code: Select allbestellbestaetigung@amazon.de

#hostname -f
yellowstone.bohlsen.lan

Server :: Writing Debian Init Script For Process That Has No Syslog Integration?

May 18, 2011

I have inherited ownership of a Debian server process that logs its error message to stdout/stderr. Currently its initscript has lines like:

start-stop-daemon [options] --exec $DAEMON -- $DAEMON_ARGS < /dev/null 2>&1 | logger $LOG_OPTIONS 2> /dev/null &

I have tried to abstract as much of that away as possible. The options specify a pid file, to make a pid file. A subsequent line tries to establish whether the process is up, though I think several conditions are not checked for. This script seems pretty ropey to me. I am trying to start again with the lsb-base one in /etc/init.d/skeleton though that is going to require a lot of modification. get the code change to use the syslog API however that is out of the question at least for now.

1.) Create a named pipe
2.) Start up a logger daemon that reads from the named pipe
3.) start up the server process that writes to the named pipe

It would be ideal for this if start-stop-daemon offered options to specify where the IO of the daemon process should be redirected to. However I am not about to offer to adopt that package (with ~400 bugs) so I doubt that will happen. Trying to specify the redirection on the command line does not work. In the case of the logger daemon start-stop-daemon seems to hang on the system call. In the case of the server process the pipe gets closed when start-stop-daemon exits, so the logger daemon exits. None of that seems surprising.So what I am doing now is to write simple wrapper scripts for the server and logger processes. Both wrapper scripts have this structure:

1.) sanity check the arguments
2.) exec program [suitable redirection of IO]

Then the start-stop-daemon can call the wrapper scripts as daemons. From my experiments so far this seems to work. However I feel a bit uncomfortable with this. It introduces several new wrapper scripts.I cannot think of any obvious security holes but I suppose race conditions are inevitable.

CentOS 5 :: Filter Bug In Rpm ?

Apr 3, 2009

It seems that rpm in CentOS has a filter to change the phrase "Red Hat" to CentOS

I understand why such a filter exists - but here's the problem -

From the EPEL rhnlib package, when viewing with rpm -qi -

Description : rhnlib is a collection of python modules used by the CentOS Network [url] software.

That gives an incorrect impression that [url] is a CentOS web site.

Package - rhnlib-2.5.10-1.el5 from EPEL

If you download the src.rpm from EPEL and view it with rpm -qip you get the filtered description, but when you install the src.rpm and look at the spec file, it clearly says CentOS.

I think you meant Red Hat. - pschaff

Perhaps instead of filtering the displayed meta data, the CentOS build system could do the filtering before the spec is built?

That way packages that are not built by CentOS will not be impacted, and cases in CentOS where the filter isn't appropriate could be handled by a list of package names that shouldn't be filtered.

Should I file this as a bug with rpm or is this sufficient?

OpenSUSE :: How To Filter A Menu

Sep 3, 2011

I'm a KDE fan, but I installed GNOME 3 to give it a test drive. I like some aspects, but I don't care for all the clutter in the menu, in the form of KDE apps that duplicate the functions of native GNOME apps. So I just opened alacarte and un-checked all those KDE apps. Simple, cleaned up the menu beautifully. Then I booted into my main environment, right-clicked on my launcher to open its editor and delete the GNOME apps. All of my KDE apps were gone!

Deleting GNOME apps from KDE works fine: They stay gone in KDE but they're still present in GNOME. The reverse is not true. Is there a better way than what I tried? Besides installing a GNOME distro in a vbox; I tried that and found it too sluggish. I could also replicate a menu structure on a dock (Cairo), but I thought I'd check with the experts first in case there's a less clunky approach.

CentOS 5 :: Configuring Syslog-ng 3.0.3 With 5.3

Oct 5, 2009

I installed syslog-ng-3.0.3-1.rhel5.i386.rpm and at first blush it appears to be working fine to /var/log/messages. However it doesn't seem to be doing any other ancillary logging as defined in syslog-ng.conf (I've had to mod /etc/init.d/syslog-ng to look in /etc). e.g.

destination d_auth { file("/var/log/secure"); };
filter f_filter3 { facility(authpriv); };
log { source(s_sys); filter(f_filter3); destination(d_auth); };

I'm using a syslog-ng.conf which has served me well in the past (v1.6.9 on fedora).

Ubuntu :: How To Install Printer Filter

Jun 7, 2011

I am new to Ubuntu and would very much appreciate someone's assistance in getting my printer to work in the Ubuntu O.S.The printer filter is located in my /home/ldavis/opt... directory and not in the/opt/ OpenPrinting- Epson/ppds/Epson directory where some of the .ppd.gz are located and where the error message states it is looking for it. Do I need to extract the .ppd.gz in the /opt/OpenPrinting-Epson/ppds/Epson directory and install the filter in the same location?

After trying several times in vain, I attempted to download and install the pinter drivers using the sudo -i apt-get install <> and apt-get upgrade < >. It installed some Epson printer drivers, but I still get an error message that the printer is looking for a printer filter to be installed. Can someone please tell me how to install a printer filter and which directory should it be installed in?
