Fedora Installation :: Using Older Kernel On F13?

My company offers Linux preloads in RHEL, Fedora and Ubuntu. I have Fedora 13 installed on my laptop. I want to install it on a desktop but the 2.6.33 kernel hangs the desktop when the Fedora 13 or Ubuntu Lucid DVD boots. I have the Ubuntu Jaunty preload on the desktop but would prefer Fedora. The preload includes a few apps for my job that aren't included with Ubuntu. Is it possible to select an older kernel to boot to and/or use that during the install? I think it is the SCSI controller causing this. I have the same model machine at home configured the same way except the onboard SCSI is disabled, I am using SATA drives in it.

I just did an upgrade and it included the kernel. As time goes by, I will be stuck with a lot of kernels to choose from, and lower disk space. How do I remove an older kernel and everything it's related to it without breaking stuff?

How can I install older fedora kernel? Because I accidentally removed the working kernel among three kernels. I've tried yum install kernel-2.6.30.10-105.2.4.fc11.i586 but fails.

I am building a series of custom kernels...for one of them i am using a kernel that is older than my currently installed ones.
I am using rpm to install this kernel and it will not install, period. i don't get why i can't install this....what does it matter that i am installing an older kernel? and why is fedora/rpm designed to not let me do this?

There should be an easy way to get around this, but i haven't figured it out yet. i've googled around, no luck. i bounce between kernel versions all the time without problems on my system, so why is rpm setup for strict versions on a kernel? and is there no way around this, and i just have to delete all three of those kernels, i don't really want to. 2 of them are awesome and i shouldn't have to build them again, that would be complete crap! and i wouldn't have this problem on my debian setup, so why fedora? (i generally think fedora is better)

I just had a hard drive failure on my mythtv box that I had been running F14 on. I reinstalled F14 and just got about everything up and running like normal again except that I upgraded the kernel by mistake when I was upgrading everything else to current levels. The problem is that I run a hauppauge pvr150 on this mythtv box, and the code for capturing on this card is broken on the latest kernel version. I have the kernel headers and development files installed for the newest kernel that I can't really use, but I didn't install the kernel headers for the older kernel before the upgrade. Now, I am looking for a way to forcefully install the older kernel development files so that I can compile my the proprietary nvidia drivers against it for my adapter. I downloaded the rpm files from the fedora 14 repository directly. Is there an option for rpm that I can use to force the installation?

I need to prevent that the latest kernel update removes the only kernel that still works in my computer. how can i do this? Currently I have 3 linux kernels versions:

But only the oldest works. With the new update there is a new kernel version (2.6.32-24) that possibly will not boot (like previous 2.6.32-* kernels) and also I expect that, as in previous updates, the oldest kernel will become inaccessible, thus rendering my ubuntu unbootable.

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.
ASUS P4P800
Intel Pentium 4 HT, 3000 MHz, Frontside 800 MHz/Cache 1 MB
3 GB Ram
AGP nVidia 7600GS/512 MB, nVidia driver 190.53, installed from yast.
PCI WLan TP-Link 951N (Atheros chipset, WLan N, driver ath9 was automatically installed)

I used to keep a back level kernel on all my systems along with the latest upgraded kernel. How is that done using Yast/zypper? I don't see an option to keep the older version.

I'm looking to install an older kernel in Maverick - something like 2.6.32 maybe? Just wondering if there's a way to do it without compiling myself. I upgraded my system without checking everything. I use it as a MythTV box and the 2.6.35 kernel breaks my remote control in a manner that appears to be unfixable at the moment, if the forums on the problem are right. I figure an older kernel will get me out of the jam, but I'm not sure how to go about it (there aren't any in the standard repos).

I would like to add latest tc+esfq functionality to machines running older distributions, FC3, FC5 etc. I am told I should down load the latest kernel and recompile with the proper patches which I can do. Are there problems with using latest kernels with older distributions, they are all running 2.6.x, but the x has of course gone up since FC3.

I just ran "yum update" to download the latest kernel from the repository, and noticed that it's 2.6.18-164.11.1 while the latest on www.kernel.org is 2.6.32.4.Out of curiosity, why is there such a discripency between the two? Lack of resources to test and build binaries?

I've recently upgraded to Natty (11.04).The problem that is now occurring, and reoccurring, is like this:- Computer boots, but hangs on a purple screen (nothing on it). Nothing happens, after 15 minutes or so I give up waiting and hard reset.- Boot via Grub (holding shift) into recovery-mode: works fine, but I want the GUI, so I reboot.- After reboot the system hangs again, as mentioned before.- Hard reset again, and booting a previous kernel (2.6.32.8 ): works fine!- Restart again, boots in most recent kernel (2.6.38.10): works fine now.- Try to shutdown/restart again, problem re-occurs every time. So I use the workaround with the extra startup with the older kernel again.and finally typing this.

Trying to install virtualbox in F12 but fails when recompiling kernel module. Output of vbox-install log is:

there is an issue with the way the Linux Kernel addresses memory by default and the graphic drivers for my Asus G1Sn. I have a patch that I had compiled against a custom kernel for 2.6.27.xx how ever it does not work with the latest kernel in Fedora 11. It is beyond me to rewrite the patch to work with a different kernel.

I use a pretty fresh installed RHEL 5.4, which should be very similar to Fedora. After the basic installation I installed xen and xen-kernel via yum with no errors. I can select the xen-kernel at boot time. But after booting the normal kernel shows up.
[root@noname boot]# uname -r
2.6.18-164.11.1.el5
My /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like:
default=1
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
[code]....
I can't see anything wrong and I did not change/try anything.

I do a volunteer work for World Computer Exchange, or WCE, a non profit org.WCE get a lot of old-ish (gettins less P3s, and more P4s now) computers, install Ubuntu and ship them to schools,libraries,etc. to the developing countries.When I say Ubuntu, I often intall Xubuntu since the machines are slow, but if it meets the Ubuntu requirement in terms of memory and disk, we often install Ubuntu Ubuntu.And, installing Ubuntu in general takes time. Most people don't notice "it's slow", but if you install it to a 10GB IDE ATA4 disks,it often takes a few hours. I can do it to a handful of machines but there are so many machines to deal with.
I modified the installer to do unattended installation so it is less of hassle now but I'd like to know what I can do to speed up the installation.If it's faster, we'd be able to go though a lot more machines.Also, it would be great if it's an easy process without network. I personally use a network (pxe boot and unattended installation), but there are many volunteers and it's logistically far easier if it can be installed without it.I give out a modified CD to those volunteers and they just put it in and watch the progress of installation. Since machines often have issues with hardware, it's not a simple process even if it's unattended installer.

I took the splash about 3 months ago when I picked up a cheap book on Ubuntu that came with the 6.0 release. I had an old clone PC that I built back around 2000-2002. My apologies, but I can't quite remember the hardware specs exactly. But anyway version 6.0 worked pretty good, and I soon after upgraded via the Synaptic manager to 8.04. Everything ran a bit better on this release.
I was working on upgrading to 9.10 eventually, so I went from 8.04 to 8.10 first. However, when I rebooted after the install the GUI failed to launch. I got a lot of text on the screen saying certain things were being checked and there was an [OK] next to all of them save one. Nvidia, my graphics card had a [FAIL] next to it. I'm inclined to think this is the problem. I'm guessing the hardware is a bit outdated for the version of Ubuntu I am using?
I tried a couple of reboots and got the same messages. Eventually found my way into the Recovery mode where all the options were recovering 8.10 - not my previous version. So my question is how do I roll back to 8.06, or is there a way to update the hardware drivers so it will run on 8.10 without buying new hardware? I did somehow manage to get to a Prompt where it was asking for my Linux Login and Password.. it let me login and now I have a "DOS" prompt... not sure about the terminology if you still call that DOS or not. I'm a noob and still trying to learn the new lingo.
I don't have much to lose.. some pictures, but I figured out how to navigate to those at the prompt so I'm going to save those to disk. If I have to wipe the drive and start over I don't care, but I thought I would throw out a post here and see if anyone had a recommendation.

I have problem installing a program (GTNets) since it requires an older version of g++ (3.3), while the current version of g++ is 4.4 in my ubuntu installation (vers 9.10). Can anyone give me recommendations on how to solve this?
I guess that there should be able to install an older version of g++ in addition to the current g++. Furthermore, the current should be the default, while the older is an optional version.

The upgrade instructions say you can use the upgrade manager to go from 10.4 to 10.10. I am currently running 9.10. Will this still work? Or do I have to go to 10.4 first? Or can I download the 10.10 alternate install iso and upgrade directly with that for both my Ubuntu and UbuntuStudio installations?

I do some volunteer work repairing and re-purposing older computers for the Salvation Army Thrift store where I live. Of course most of the computers we get are older. My reason is to get some of the poorer kids a fighting chance at school. We sell these things for next to nothing to accomplish this. I include free tech/training support for 30 days to get them started as. My problem is that finding a version of ubuntu and openoffice that will run on them is becoming difficult. Any suggestions as to a version that works for those not real familiar with computers?

i wanna install older versions of fedora(10 or 11), and after looking everywhere, i found that if you search the available mirrors through the download page. This allows you to select mirrors with the version you want. I didnt know if that was the way to get older versions or if there is another way.

Is there way to tweak it in some way so the speed is back, because before F13 World of Goo played perfectly and now in F13 it is playable but not "fluid" as before? Also if it is because of changes in F13 considering graphics what to expect in future, would performance be back?
