OpenSUSE Install :: KDM Login To KDE Not Working In 11.4
May 27, 2011
I have a newly installed openSUSE 11.4 (several reinstalls actually) which will not login to KDE (Plasma Desktop) from the KDM menu. When trying, the background image of KDM flickers a bit and I can see a hint of the bottom panel contours before it disappears again and only the KDM background image is shown. I have the right click menu working and also I can see started applications when alt+tabbing as white squares on the screen but no plasma desktop appears. It's as if the KDM background image blocks the desktop behind it.
If I switch to a console and init 3, log in as root and then run startx...the KDE Plasma Desktop loads and works brilliantly, but I cannot do this as a non root user.Logging in to IceVM from KDM works as a normal user.I figured this could be some kind of permissions issue so I tried creating a new user but I had no luck with that either. Does someone have any tips on how to solve this problem or a way to troubleshoot it?

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

I recently installed SuSE 11.4 (kernel 2.6.37.6-0) and it all works very nicely EXCEPT for the KDM login. I am using kde 4.6.0 and have the latest updates for 11.4 installed and at install time, I left the automatic Login box checked which works ok. However, when I go to the 'Personal Settings - configure desktop' and change the Login - convenience' to UNcheck the Auto login box, it does not change the Login action - I stlll login (without a login name and password screen appearing). I have looked at the file - /usr/share/kde/config and the kdmrc file does change to read 'autologin' true (or false) when I make the changes in the configure desktop GUI, but this has no effect on my actual ability to 'login' automatically all the time!

I had an old SuSE installation (v9 or 10, I forget) on which I used to remotely login to a kde session using xdmcp. I blew this away and installed 11.3, and I just can't get it to work. I'm pretty sure I've enabled all the things I should have. there a bug?(Incidentally, I had the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 (with Gnome), and eventually found I needed an updated version of gdm. With X tunneled through a PuTTy ssh session I can display individual X windows no probs. Also, a VNC session is rejected out of hand.)

I can't use the touch pad in my laptop for clicking in the touch surface at the login screen. (and not the buttons) This was even a case in my desktop. but i solved it by choosing enable touchpad click option from control centre > mouse preference > touchpad. But how to enable touchpad click at the login screen?

My OpenSUSE 11.2 is working fine as samba server, no problems, but I have a problem with KDM.My default init runlevel is set to 5 and every time I try to login at KDM (KDE4), the monitor goes black and returns to the login screen. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console and start /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon manually, press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to KDM login, everything is fine. What do I have to do to fix this issue?

been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.

when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.

The graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.
It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.
The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.
What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.
Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?
Packages:
OpenSuSE 11.2 + KDE 4 factory & enlightenment & qt 4.6 repos
X.Org 7.4-35.3
Kwin 4.3.98-406.6
libqt4 4.6.1+4.6.20100202-1.1

I just installed the opensuse 11.2 64 bit version on my gateway md2614u.I am having sound problems. There is no sound for the internet (..... was the test) and the amarok audio will not play any mp3 files. The only sound that I can hear is the initial start up noise. Other than that there is no sound.

In case you don't already know, I'm running 11.4 x64 with GNOME. I had a realization recently that my computer doesn't make any login or logoff sounds. After some investigation, I've found there are two problems:
1) The command for the login sound defaults to a sound that doesn't exist; the id is "desktop- login", but no desktop-login.oga exists in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo. There does exist service-login.oga, however.
2) Even with explicitly setting the path on canberra-gtk-play, no sound plays. The command hangs for a couple seconds and produces no errors, suggesting that it does find the sound, but nothing comes out of the speakers.
I'm not terribly desperate to get login sounds working, but I am confused about why this wouldn't work out of the box.

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:
/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
[code]....
I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

In the process of installing 11.2 over 10.2 everything goes fine until I reach a login screen. There I provide my previously supplied username and password and the result is logon failed. I have tried the install several times. The result is always the same.Login also does not work from console. Some surfing has provided the suggestion that the old Grub may still exist on the machine. If so, how do I get rid of it?

I'm using openSuse 11.2, KDE, x64 and, all of a sudden, my user accounts stop working!
My first acc, 'bidu' stopped at login. It asked for the pass of kWallet, and then nothing! The screen freezes. So I created another user, 'biduzido'. It worked fine until yesterday -.- Today I can't login with it. I type the pass, the screens turns black and then it shows the login screen again. I can login with the root.

I just updated my 11.4 installation to the newest KDE 4.6.1 from the KDE46 repos.
But know when i get to the login screen and i write my login information,i will just get a black screen and then get the login screen again.
I think i had the same problem with 4.5 on Kubuntu, and it was solved by reinstalling kde-base (I think, i can't remember) but i tried that from a console login. I can login again if i downgrade to KDE 4.6.0.

Been using 11.2 for a couple of months now, mostly I've solved my own problems or read from some preexisting already solved problems on threads like these. But, I'm not even sure where to start with this one. I cannot login under my main username, the account is set to autologin, and I get the login screen instead. When I attempt to login I get a black screen for about a second then it bumps me back to the login screen, no error messages. I'm able to login under runlevel 3, but as soon as I try to "init 5" it bumps me out and back to the login screen.
Root account works fine, and I used it to create a secondary account from which I am posting from right now. The behavior started after the system put the display to sleep while I was watching a movie in VLC, I woke it up just as it turned completely black, it hung there and I was forced to hard reboot. Had the problem ever since (for several hours now, lol).
I use Gnome but I installed KDE to see if it would resolve my problem, but no dice.
