I have just recently installed opensuse 11.2 (on a seperate hdd) on my file server. I have a highpoint rocketraid card in the system with 4 x 1.5tb HDDs. I'd like to get my RAID5 showing up without loosing any data? Is this possible??I have been following this post over HERE

Running OpenSuse 11.4 and have setup 2 x Raid5 configs - raid created, disks format, everything working fine. I've just rebooted and the raid5 fails to initialize.

I have a raid 5 with 5 disks, I had a disk failure which made my raid go down, after some struggle I got the raid5 up again and the faulty disk was replaced and rebuilt itself. After the disk rebuilt itself I tried doing a pvscan but could not find my /dev/md0. I followed some steps on the net to recreate the pv using the same uuid then restored the vg(storage) using a backup file. This all went fine.I can now see the PV, VG(storage) and LV's but when I try to mount it, I get a error "wrong fs type" I know that the lv's are reiserfs filesystems, so I did a reiserfsck on /dev/storage/software, this gives me the following error:reiserfs_open: the reiserfs superblock cannot be foundNow next step would be to rebuild then superblock, but I'm afraid that I might have configured something wrong on my raid or LVM and by overwriting the superblock I might not be able to go back and fix it once I've figured out what I didn't configure correctly.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a RAID5 array that doesn't want to automount after rebooting. I'm pretty familiar with linux, RAID, and mdadm, and up until now, I've had the RAID5 array working just fine. However, whenever I reboot, the array drops off and won't remount until I manually assemble and then mount the thing. I find this odd because I had everything automounting just fine back in 10.3, and even in 11.0 (I think - not sure on that). Currently, things are working, but I'd really like to not not have to type

Anyways, I have a RAID5 array 2.72TB (4x1TB drives) which I used in my windows installation, initialized as GPT, and I used "span" to make the single 2TB partition, and 720GB partition into one partition. I believe that Windows created a software RAID0. Ok, so now I've made the leap away from windows, and am going 100% into Linux (Debian, to be exact) and I'm trying to figure out how to mount this array. I've only done basic web/ftp/ircd server management on Linux before, and never anything with mounting drives. I'm a complete n00b at this stuff.

I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:

sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.
Now the questions:
1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".
2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?
I have no drive failures but just need to recreate a raid5 set as the next free MD disk number. Originally I built a temp OS of debian on a single drive and had 4x2TB drives in a raid5 software array (MD0) this worked fine and allowed me to move all data to it, and remove our old fileserver. I have now pulled out the 4 x 2TB Raid 5 drives and created a new OS on two new 80GB drives, partioned as follows,
MD0 is now 250mb Raid1 as /boot
MD1 is 4GB Raid1 Swap
MD2 is 76GB Raid1 as /
If I turn off and push back in the 4x2TB drives I cannot see a MD3. I presume I would need to create a MD3 from these 4 drives but I dont want to mess things up as its live data. So im here asking for help, or a bit of hand holding to get it done right.
PS - Its a Debian Lenny 5.0.3 Raid1 fresh install replacing a Debian Lenny 5.0.3 on a single disk.
I am unable to get a USB stick or blank DVD's. I know I can mount an .ISO and install it through Windows, but is there a way I can make a separate partition, instead of using the one from Windows?

In kubuntu, there used to be 2 extra icons for my other disks in the 'places' pane, but they are not there in opensuse. How can I get them back on this pane please?

I have SUSE DVD and have set local(OD) repository priority to 80 in order to get most packages from DVD. Inspite of that YaST pulls packages from online repositories, it may be the latest version. I have 8 MbPS dsl but the YaST download speeds are around 500B. How do I change mirrors of repositories. In my opinion this has nothing to do with ipv6, I use ipv6 for openBSD and it get good browsing speeds. Im trying to set kdm4 login manager but it doesnt start after enabling for YaST-/etc/sysconfig.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed openSuse 11.2. I added extra repo's like packman and Mozilla. I gave them priority level 80. The normal openSuse repo's have priority level 99.Still, Yast does not show newer versions from Packman or Mozilla.Yast completely ignores the prioritylevels of the repo's.The only time Yast shows packages from other repo's, is when they are not in the default repo's, like XMMS,w32codec-all, etc.So the repo's are added in the right way,but something strange happens in software management.
When I search for firefox, it shows the old version 3.5.6-1.1.1.When I click on the tab versions, I see that version 3.6.0-1.2 is there from openSuse buildservice.Why is Yast not showing the higher version (available) in the mainscreen?When I select it manually, Yast complains about dependancies because it is not aware of newer versions of mozilla xulrunner.
openSUSE 11.2 installed on machine with 5GB memory but System Information in KDE desktop shows only 3GB total memory. Just added a further 4GB but no change shown in System Information.
Is there something I must do to have sysinfo report true value and does this mean that memory not shown is not being used?
POST BIOS check shows 9GB installed.
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on my HP G60-445DX which has windows 7. i want to do a complete win7 wipe and just run Ubuntu but when i run the install disc i get an error not able to mount. I believe it has something to do with the bios which will not let me get into the hard drive config

How can you remove a drive and convert the array to just a regular, clean array?
I am using the mount command to mount Windows shared folders are another machine on my LAN, to have them show up in the Linux filesystem. The command mounts the folders just fine, however the access is read-only.
In the command, I am also using the -o option to specify a username and password that should have full access. Also, I have used this identical command on my other distros and it seems to work fine. I've Googled high and low, trying to find a way to specify a Samba user/password for authentication. I know one of the other distros had a program that I could specify a Samba user/password to simulate a Windows login.
I have a huge problem with my file server (OpenSuse 11.3 - 64bit, kernel-2.6.34.7-0.7-default). I've just installed an Intel SASUC8I card, connected 3 of the 7 Samsung 2TB drives I have to it and after about one hour, it dropped 2 of the disks. I've managed to trace the problem to the card BIOS, which I've replaced with the non-raid edition, so it should now work fine with the kernel raid now. The problem is that I can't find a way to "un-fail" these 2 disks. I'm more than positive, that these drives are just fine, only the controller was misbehaving. The dropout also couldn't have created any data inconsistency either, since the 2 drives dropped out virtually at the same time and there was no writing being done at the time. I've tried add/re-add, I get either mdadm: cannot get array info for /dev/md0 or mdadm: add new device failed for /dev/sdi1 as 7:
Invalid argument (depending on the raid being run or being stopped, in either case, mdstat reports it to be inactive)
For a normal or forced assemble, I get mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 5 drives and 1 spare - not enough to start the array.I've been googleing like crazy, also trying to get info from mdadm's help and man, but nothing seems to deal with such a freak accident. An other interesting thing is, that if I reboot the system, mdstat shows md0 as inactive, but lists all the devices with no flags. It's only after a run command, that it changes to the 5 remaining devices, all with (S) flags. Alternatively: does anyone know where device failure info is stored? If I could in some way remove this information from the system (even by reinstalling the OS), I should be able to reassemble the array... Or is it stored in the member drive super-blocks? About 80% of this array's data is backed up, so if all else fails, I can restore most of its content, but I'd much prefer to reassemble this one as a whole, since there was absolutely no chance of data corruption.

Just had to replace the hard drive on my wife's iPod Classic 6th Generation. Now I cannot mount the device. It works fine on Windows and Mac computers. I have tried formating it on both Windows and Mac, I've done restores through Itunes on both. Here is what I get in my /var/log/messages

I'm running OpenSuse 11.2. I've got it running mostly the way I want and it connects to my wireless internet no problem. I have a external hard-drive on my Windows machine setup as a share folder. I can mount the drive with:

Also on a slightly different issue but still mounting related I have my HDD partitioned into four main drives (not including swap etc). They are my Windows drive, a seperate storage partition formatted for Windows, my main linux drive and a seperate parition for linux storage.
I want to have my Windows drive, my Windows storage drive and my linux storage drive all mounted on boot. I tried adding these to fstab, and they mount fine but again I have no read/write permissions. My fstab looks like this:

Lastly I would like my Windows Share drive to mount on boot but I have been advised that I would need to write a shell script for this, to do network checks as obviously I won't always be connecting to my network.
I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.10. I am using it to share many hard drives connected to it. I am using Samba. I have successfully shared many folders to one Windows user. I am attempting to share other folders within the shared folders to another user as read only but have not had any success. When I attempt to connect to one of the shares from another computer running Ubuntu 10.10, logged into an Administrator account with the same username and password which I setup on the Samba share I get the error: "Unable to mount location" "Failed to mount Windows share"
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse in my laptop in which I already installed opensuse.Now the grub shows first, on boot up. I want to set windows bootloader in front. In order to do that, I did the following,
1. unmount all devices "umount /windows/*"
2. my hard disk partition:- see the link cfdisk /dev/sda | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
3. mount the C drive (where win 7 is installed)
"ntfs-3g /dev/sda3 /mnt/windows -o force "
4. dd if=/dev/sda8 of=/mnt/windows/suse.bin bs=512 count=1
5. kwrite /mnt/windows/boot.ini and write the following,
[boot loader]

c: suse.bin="openSUSE"
6. change the boot to sda3 using "sudo /sbin/cfdisk /dev/sda"
Problem is,
now windows bootloader shows when boot up, showing two options,

openSUSE
windows option works normally; but openSUSE option doesn't work.
