How can unhide my hiden partitions?these are disk details when i invocate " sudo fdisk -l" command:

Hidden directory is .XXX, there is a "." in front. How to make it non-hidden? I mean, you can see it at terminal with ls command.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a Buffalo 500GB ministation usb with "optional disk encryption". Turns out, I'm having one hell of a time trying to remove the "optional" from the drive. I figured I could just delete the program that is on the disk, and go on my way. That doesn't seem to be the case.
fdisk /dev/sdc1, then "p" showed that there were 4 partitions. So I deleted them one by one. "n" gave me a new partition. "t" I used 87 because I will be using it on windows. Then "w" to write everything.
mkfs -t ntfs /dev/sdc1 - all went well.
fsck -f -y /dev/sdc1 - all went well
Then I took the removed the drive and plugged into Windows only to find that the "optional" is still there. It actually creates a virtual drive with the "optional" software. So I tried it over again. I tried fdisk only to see that the partitions were back (as if they were never removed). I removed them again, and used primary partition as linux and wrote to disk. As a hunch, I checked permissions. Can't remember what it said, but I did change them.
chmod 777 /dev/sdc1
Then in a last hope of desperation, before coming to work today, I decided to dd the drive.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=4k conv=notrunc
Is it possible that the "optional" stuff is actually hard coded onto a chip, or something inside the drive and I may never get rid of it?
just a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?

I accidentally clicked Hide Menu toolbar, which apparently in this, there's no way to unhide it. The only thing showing now is the Sidebar, and I don't know how to get any of the toolbars back. [URL]

Note that on some WoW DVD's the installer executable is hidden and you need to re-mount the disc with the 'unhide' option. To do this type in a terminal:
sudo umount /dev/cdrom
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o ro,unhide /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0/
The unmount part works just fine but when I go to remount the drive it gives me this error:
mount: mount point /media/cdrom0/ does not exist
According to what I have read to date, Linux should let me hide or unhide a partition by just using gparted or parted, or reverting to fdisk. Well, all three say you can do it, but none of them does. According to several sources, there is software available under DOS or Windows for the purpose, but I want to do it as a separate boot method or under Ubuntu when I boot up Live.

I'd like to be able to press the windows key (Super_L) to show it just like when you hover the mouse to the bottom of the screen.
so far i have been only able to set a keyboard shortcut to show the ubuntu menu... but it will only make the menu pop up while the panel remains hidden. :

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Apache with Kerberos security enabled. The http page simply lists the directories contained in /var/www/html. I want to make only one of the directories in the document root secured so that when someone clicks on it, it requires him/her to enter credentials. Right now when I place the .htaccess file in the directory I want to protect, the directory is hidden from the list and the user has to enter the whole path to get authenticated and access the files.
I've tried Options +Indexes which was posted all over the net, but it didn't work.
I have a spreadsheet I have been using for years not and as I go I hide some of the cells. Today I unhide those cells and they came up but very thin and hard to read. I have tried to highlight the "thin" cells and do some type of format but I can not seem to get them back to the normal size.

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago.After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it

When we install a linux OS, we've an option to create partitions. In my laptop I've create partition for /opt, /home, / and /tmp. Are these partitions the same type of partitions as the partitions created by LVM?

I've been using aptitude to install software but sendmail is nowhere to be found. Even running 'aptitude install sendmail' results in nothing but "No candidate version found for sendmail". Similar for apt-get.
Suggestions for where to go from here? I wonder what other software might be hidden or not available?
I did some unfortunate dragging I think and now most of my windows which were open before are not there anymore. When I go to processes, I can see that they are still there. E.g. I had a terminal window open and now the window is gone but I can still see a bash process in the list

I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.

I'm having trouble with a fresh install of 10.4 Lucid Lynx on an old Pentium III desktop that was working fine with a previous release of Ubuntu. The problem started after an upgrade to 10.4, persisted after doing a clean install from CD, and is still there after installing all recommended updates.
The symptom is that after login, neither the top nor the bottom gnome panels are displayed. I can right-click on the desktop and get the desktop menu, and I can type Alt-F1 and get the left-hand launcher menus, though the top panel still does not display.
The problem does not always occur, but nearly always. The first login to a newly created account will often show the panels, but in subsequent logins the panels are hidden.
If I login in Failsafe GNOME mode, the panels will appear.
I can fix the problem for a given login session by opening gconf-editor, editing /apps/panels/toplevels/top_panel_screen0, and toggling auto_hide on and then off again. If I log out and back in again, the problem recurs. The problem is that I'm trying to set up this computer for some very naive users, so this kind of workaround isn't really practical.
I'm not sure if it matters, but in the Appearance preferences, visual effects are set to "none".
how I might get the gnome panels to appear reliably?
How can I change those heavy black dots that are generated in the hidden password field to asterisks? I have looked in gconf-editor but haven't run across it. Or maybe it's in a totally different place?

Also, it does tend to get in the way a bit, such as obscuring my options button in Chrome, rather than just taking up a bit of unused space on my tabs bar. Wasn't having this issue with 10.04, but started happening immediately after upgrade.Example of what I'm talking about:
