I have a qzd notebook with an rdc 1010 flash drive. I have downloaded the new 11.2 version of opensuse and it now recognises it, so thanks for that.Only trouble is I get an error message of:Failure occured during following action: Setting disk label of disk /dev/sda to msdos. System error code was: -1013A little history is required in orderI had windows xp installed to begin with (fool me ay!) and when I installed the adobe flash player 10, it always crashed my internet explorer, so i managed to find flash player 7, which I installed and it worked (kind of; it played videos, but stallingly; although this might be to do with the fact that i was also upgrading to IE 8 at the same time) but after a few seconds of it playing a video the computer reset and the message DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER appears. It seems that this flash player was some kind of virus and I worry that it may of damaged the flash drive, or is it that it's just messed up the MBR.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.
Every time I start my computer, I get a message saying:

I`ve looked on the web, and grub stage 1.5 seems to be where the size of the hard drive is identified. Problems often seem to be linked to partitioning. My hard drive has (since new) a 115GB and a 5GB partition.
When I try to access the 5GB partition, I get the following error message:

I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on another hard disk of my 11.3 machine. I have another drive in my computer that is used solely for extra storage. Before installing 11.4 I could boot my computer with or without the drive installed, but now if I try to boot without it I get Error 17 from GRUB. I don't understand this as there is nothing on that drive that should be needed by boot and I can find nothing in the GRUB configuration that references the drive.I am getting ready to clear the whole system for a fresh install anyways, but it would be nice to know for future knowledge what is causing it.

I have 2 hard disk's (80GB & 20GB), on the first HD which is 80GB I have Windows XP and the other one I partitioned and installed Linux. Now the first problem is that, whenever I start my PC I get a error which says "GRUB hard disk error", however when I restart the machine it's fine and gives me the boot options.
Secondly, the HD containing windows was affected by virus so I had to format & reinstall XP. Strangely after that I am not getting any boot options and it's like windows is the only 1 OS running. But on windows the partition on which Linux is installed in intact. So I assume something is deleted maybe the Linux boot file.

Consulted similar threads but couldn't find a solution for my problem as I'm booting from livecd and others were giving solution as if one can directly access the installation on hard disk, but whenever I try with ubuntu livecd it access live installation.
It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

My system has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on /sda1 and originally a 10.04 on /sdb1-3, now upgraded to 11.04. The Ubuntu system works fine (teething troubles with nvidia drivers on upgrade but fixed now), and the Windows system shows up in the grub menu, but when it's selected, I just get `GRUB Hard Disk Error' and nothing else. Windows installed properly, and booted successfully until I installed Ubuntu in the first place. I can still access the files on that drive from within Ubuntu.
I've tried fixboot in the Win Recovery Console, which sounded like it did something, but didn't fix the problem. This problem isn't new to grub2, by the way - I just haven't needed Windows in a year.

As I mentioned earlier, I am able to mount sda1. I think the problem is that the Partition Boot Sector is corrupted, even though I am not sure if the ntfs partition is damaged at all or if GRUB is the problem.
As I said I had problems with a kernel update and therefore had to reinstall GRUB. I think, but I am not sure, that I accidentally installed GRUB on sda1 (the windows partition) instead of on sda. After I installed GRUB on sda again, I was able to boot linux and fixed sda1 with testdisk. Before, sda1 showed as four partitions (sda1p1, ... , sda1p4). I was not able to mount sda1 till I fixed it with testdisk. testdisk says the Boot Sector of sda1 is OK, so does ntfsfix.

I am in Tanzania with this netbook, so it is not possible to boot Windows CD and fix the windows partition with it, also I don't have a very fast Internet connection.
Is there a way to fix this without a Windows CD? Maybe it is just a dumb mistake in the menu.lst?
I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

Performed an install from CD to an USB drive making a JFS partition mounted on / and a swap partition. The installer made the JFS partition bootable (boot flag is set) as I asked. I'm new here, and am currently typing this on my new computer that I've been building from the ground up over the last month to be my dedicated Digital Audio Workstation. Ive been recording music for some time, and have been using Ardour for years, but this will be the first time I've built a computer SPECIFICALLY for the purpose of recording my music.
What I want to ask about, however, is hard drives. So far, the plan is, to have two terabyte drives, one with Ubuntu Studio and XP (yes, it's a dual-boot system) and another to store all my music files. That way, I can access the drive from both operating systems, and it should hopefully reduce lag because (in theory, anyways) OS and program files can be accessed from one disk while massive amounts of audio files can be accessed or written on the other disk simultaneously. It seemed like a good plan.
But then I started looking at high-rpm drive and wondering if i should be saving my data files on one of those, or possibly put my OS on a small solid-state drive (fast and quiet) and the audio files on a regular drive.
I currently have a Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm one terabyte drive, unpartitioned, with XP on it. As soon as i figure out my hard drive situation, I'll be installing my copy of Ubuntu. So, what do you guys suggest? And what are some of your setups? Alos, keep in mind, I would prefer to keep this under 150$, or at the very least no more than 200$.
I've recently added a new hard disk and due to mother board controllers this new hard disk is known as sda.Before that my boot partition was /dev/sda3 and know this changed to sdb3.Whenever grub menu appears and I choose opensuse,it can't find /dev/sda3 .It seems that I should edit menu.lst or change boot loader parameter.something like root (hd1,2).But I don't how I can do this with opensuse boot loader.Though I could do this with CentOS easily.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought a new hard drive. I thought it would be clever and SAFE to install Ubuntu on the Hard Drive so that would not interfere with the internal hard drive on my laptop. It worked fine until I disconnected the hard drive. I got the "Grub Error 21" when I installed. I know how to get around it, unfortunately, I have to lug around this hard drive whenever my computer sleeps or restarts. I would like to be able to restart and boot into Windows without my hard drive connected. Is this possible?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've used YAST to include a USB hard disk in the export list and mount it to remote machine with NFS. That worked first time the disk was mounted. On the next reboot I saw that the USB disk was mounted again in "/media" but in new folder and its previous folder existed but empty and was mounted with nfs. It seems that first nfs comes mounted in booting time and then USB gets mounted after logging as a user. USB hard disk finds its folder occupied and automatically creates new folder in "/media". What should be done in order to USB hard disk and nfs to be mounted in the same point automatically on the boot ? The second question : When I mount an external disk to be accessible remotely with nfs I get refused to unmount the disk as a USB device. Is it possible to be unmounted as a USB disk done without unmounting it as a nfs as well?

I now want to replace the Ubuntu 9.10 with LinuxMCE which is based on Ubuntu 8.10. Using the LinuxMCE install disk, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 over the top of Ubuntu 9.10 (repartitioning the whole drive). On reboot, I now get a Grub "no such disk" error. Recently I was working on something on my windows partition (on the same HD as opensuse), and all the sudden windows stopped working and I got some bad sectors on my HD.
Now, my opensuse installation is on the same HD as windows, but I need to get rid of that HD soon because it's starting to get worse (and I think opensuse is randomly crashing because of it).
Is there any way to transfer my opensuse parititon/os to another hard drive?
I am new to linux. I am trying to install suse 11.3 on my desktop which has following configuration:
Intel Pentium 4 processor 32 bit
512 mb RAM
80 gb Hard Disk
I made a 20gb partition on my hard disk and formatted it as fat32 for installing suselinux on it. I changed my boot priority and booted the system from the bootable dvd. The problems are:
1). Message is displayed telling to ensure that cd 1 is in the drive. I cannot make out what this means when the dvd is already in the drive. If I press ok same message keeps coming if I press back following occurs.
2). The installation starts and asks for language and keyboard type. Then it asks me to specify the hard disk and then a message is displayed that it cannot find repository.
I'm running openSUSE 11.3 and screwed some things up so that I can't install anything, including UNetbootin. So I decided to completely reinstall. I'm limited to using my hard drive as there's no CD/DVD or floppy drives installed on the machine and BIOS does not support booting from USB.

Creating the folder "distro" on root was easy and went smoothly. I can't seem to make the second 'whoami' command work, though. I copied-and-pasted "sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`" into the terminal. It asks me for the root password, I enter that and then get

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME When I was working on desktop settings, it locked itself, and it doesn't accept password I set during installation. I know that password is right, because it worked in YaST.
How to solve this problem without loosing any files? I haven't done backup... Is it possible to reinstall system, without formatting hard disk, and loosing files?
Downloaded Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop AMD64, tried to install it to a cleand HDD using the whole HDD, i.e. gave it permission to use the whole HDD. Installation process appeared to run OK but when it came to the restart it just fired up the message

I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language ? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem ?

When i boot with livecd it shows a failure in the hard disk, but in monted system dont.
