when i login, Ubuntu asks to install 3D Drivers for my grapics card. Can i make a script in openSUSE to do this as well? Or even better, check for drivers on startup and then install the drivers for the graphics card on boot.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.
Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.
I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.
Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)

I just installed Opensuse 11.2, and have come across the following error upon bootup: the display manager screen refuses to load, unless I type STARTX at the cli line. the error messages read: failed services in runlevel 5 /etc/init.d/xdm.orig start returned 6 earlyxdm postfix Further, I am unable to activate the xdm service under Yast. Has anyone else run across this error? Not sure how to resolve.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I reboot, USB keyboard acts just fine for GRUB. Once SUSE begins to boot, I lose the keyboard (numlock light goes off too). Cannot press ESC to watch the boot sequence. Then, at login, there is no mouse or keyboard for about 60 seconds. Then suddenly, they both become active. Why did this start happening?
It has been about a week since my last reboot, so there's been a few config changes and patches, so it's going to be hard to narrow down a culprit. Thought USB configs in /etc/fstab was the problem, but still happening after rolling back changes to a known good config. Re-ran SaX2. Mouse and keyboard look good in the config file. Also, have otherwise healthy USB behavior with thumb drives and in VirtualBox machines. It just acts goofy at boot time.

I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 a few weeks ago. It freezes 10 - 15 seconds after startup. I got a brief, but incomplete reply to what I thought was another related problem on the forum (OpenSUSE 11.3 / Mozilla Firefox freezes upon moving the mouse), but it turns out that the problem is neither the mouse nor Firefox. It freezes without doing anything special.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having plasma crashes for the past few days. I'm running KDE 4.5.2 and it was all running fine. Then the latest runs of updates happened and now I can't get a desktop. KDE runs but plasma fails to start leaving me with a black screen and a mouse pointer. This happens in both failsafe and normal, with or without a fresh .kde4 folder and consistently! I use normally opensuse 11.1. This days I installed the 11.3. Since I have installed it, the resolution is higher and the fonts are very small. I have some problems with my eyes, so I prefer to use text mode for startup and console. So now I dont know how I can get back to start system in textmode 80x25. suse seem to ignore every command I enter I tried in Yast grub settings to set there Text mode. I tried to add command vga-normal vga-0xF00. Nothing changes it. There is maybe a bug. Whay is the standard resulotion in 11.3 so high ? The installation works in textmode, but after first start it goes up.

This is strange. I moved OS 11.1 from an old 150 GB PATA drive over to a 500 GB SATA using Parted Magic. The old and new partitions were

I used the "Clonezilla" tool on the Parted Magic live CD to move and resize the partitions. To my delight, everything appeared to transfer just fine. I can boot into OpenSUSE 11.1 (though not into Windows, but that's not really important; I'll figure that out later), but my /home partition won't mount. I'm set to autologin, and I get the expected error: "can't access /home/stephen" (or something like that). Here's the weird thing. I can ALT-F3, get a terminal and manually "mount /dev/sda2 /home", go back to ATL-F7 and log right in, so I know the disk is fine. (I've already 'fsck'd everything, by the way, and they're clean.)
I've used Yast's partitioner about a dozen times, trying "device by ID" and other settings. I always get the same thing when I reboot. On this last reboot, when it refused to log into /home, I ALT-F3'd, logged in as root, did a "cat" on "/etc/fstab" and entered the device-by-id line exactly as I saw it there and it mounted the /home directory just fine! ALT-F7, logged into KDE. I'm typing this in KDE now. Works fine. I so rarely need to reboot this machine that I can manually mount the /home partition, if need be, but (obviously) I'd like it to be mounted automatically during the boot.

I don't see anything obviously wrong here. The fact that I can take that second line and do a manual "mount" shows me that the device ID is at least correct. Just to be clear, here's what I entered in virtual terminal 3 as root to get my home partition to mount:

i m running suse 11.2 on a generic desktop machine with two external usb hard disks for data storage. when i restart, the names of the names of the usb disks get changed in /media from exampledisk to exampledisk-1, another boot up and i get exampledisk-2. the data is no longer in exampledisk, but in exampledisk-1 or exampledisk-2.

I'd just installed a *nix antivirus called Avrira Antivir (from downloaded script & installation files), but it completely froze my system when I tried to start it, and the system freezes at the login screen; which is probably because I selected the option of running it automatically upon startup...So here's the deal: I know that I can run a live Linux usb to mount my current fs, then edit the file(s) that load the Avira processes on startup, but I don't know what these files are, much less which directories they are in!

Rebooted and now mouse and keyboard (both USB) not working. Keyboard works on grub menu. Also works now in XP. Tried reconnecting (sync & plug unplug) different usb ports and nothing. Gave it a few minutes on startup and still nothing. Plugged in a PS2 keyboard and the lights just blink after startup and it will not work either.

Running Opensuse 11.4 (but had same problem on 11.3). During startup and shutdown, the text messages are displayed using a very large font (characters are > 1 cm high). How can I specify the font and font size it uses ? Presumably it is doing a bad job of detecting the monitor (its a Samsung SyncMaster P2250). Which config file contains a suitable entry, and what is the entry ?
View 6 Replies View Related2 weeks ago, my power supply blew, during close-down. My system is a SUSE Linux 10.1 and openSUSE 11.1 dual boot with WInXP (for those family things). After replacing the power supply my system had no root partition, or loader. It said something like "Invalid Partition table". Grub had gone! So following swerdna's "How to Boot into openSUSE" tutorial I used the openSuse 11.1 install CD rescue option to get to the command prompt, su'd, went to grub and followed the stated commands. So far so good.
However the new grub entry openSUSE (Failsafe) has a problem. It starts to boot in the usual way, but I note fatal Module errors in the boot log relating to sata_nv not found, ide_pci_generic not found etc, and Fatal error inserting edd (/lib/modules/2.6.27.39-0.2-default/kernel/driver/firmware/edd.ko): no such device but uses udev as boot source until Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/ataST3120827AS-4M60PX7V-part6...... and then it exits to /bin/sh.

I have a large external drive, which I connect to my laptop via a PCMCIA card - the machine is old and does not have USB 2.0 built in, so I use the PCMCIA card for that.
I am thinking of the following setup, and hope you can give me some tips on whether or not that would be a sound solution:
- designate a boot partition on the laptop's internal hard drive, which could store kernels
- make up a linux partition (or more than one) to use as root for any distribution on the external drive
- keep /home as separate partition on the external drive
My goal in mind is to be able to boot more than one Linux partition from the external drive. I can't make it through USB boot because the PCMCIA card is not recognized before a kernel module is loaded, and I can't use the internal USB 1.1 port for the external drive.
Do you think this is the way to go? Currently, I only have my /home partition mounted off the external drive.
I am hoping there is somebody out there who might recall DPT hardware and be able to get it to work under Linux. DPT were bought up by Adaptec but made great SCSI cards. The PM3334UW is a true hardware raid device which I have been using in SOHO environment for the last 7 years or so with IBM Warp 4.52 (MCP2). The box, although legacy hardware is sound and I wish to keep it running but hoped to have an openSUSE option. Unfortunately I cannot find a driver for the SCSI RAID card. There are a good deal of posts concerning eata_dma.c and other eata based drivers as possibles but when I load the eata driver that is available when loading openSUSE 11.3 I am asked for parameters and I haven't a clue what these should be.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got myself in a bit of a pickle.I've got 1 hard disk drive and was trying to load a second external drive.I tried to mount the 2nd (external) drive by editing /boot/ grub/ device.map but I must have made an error, because now it boots directly into sda1 openSUSE 11.1 and when I try to look at SDA2/SDA3 it say's Invalid System Type. Presumably because they're formatted with Ext4. So I can't edit back my device.map file.What I want to do is boot into SDA3 OpenSUSE 11.3. Would anybody know why it's only booting to SDA1 and/or have any suggestions to get me back booting to SDA3? This may be a 2 step process, because I may have to boot to SDA2 first so I can edit back my /boot/grub/device.map on SDA3 before finally booting to SDA3.
