I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 a few weeks ago. It freezes 10 - 15 seconds after startup. I got a brief, but incomplete reply to what I thought was another related problem on the forum (OpenSUSE 11.3 / Mozilla Firefox freezes upon moving the mouse), but it turns out that the problem is neither the mouse nor Firefox. It freezes without doing anything special.
View 9 RepliesI've been having problems with Ubuntu/Kubuntu (I switch back and forth) freezing shortly after booting and logging in. I installed 9.10 a few days ago (fresh install, new hard drive). I installed all of my packages, and everything works fine except this freezing bug.
If there is not a freeze within a few minutes after startup, then there so far has not been a freeze at all (so, if everything is fine after a short time, then everything will continue to be fine). I'll try to add some information here that will be helpful: I dual boot with Windows 7, which is installed on sda1. Ubuntu is on sdb. There doesn't seem to be any problems with this. I have an Nvidia 9800 GTX+ graphics card (I use the proprietary driver). 8 GB Ram, Intel quad 2.66 CPU.
I'm trying to use Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop computer after not having it for a few years (I've actually been waiting for new releases to fix this since it started around 9.04, with no such luck). However, it freezes within minutes after logging in just after a fresh install (triggered by trying to do pretty much anything beyond just moving the mouse, opening menus, etc., although I was able to apt-get install a few packages through terminal with no problems and run update manager) with no explanation. I was able to install Ubuntu through the Alternate installer, however. Normally, I would just search the internet (including this forum) (I've solved several problems that way), but this problem wass too broad for me to find anything useful and specific.
Actions before freezes include browsing the web with Firefox, trying to mount NTFS drives in Computer, and particularly predicatably when opening any non-terminal package manager program. Freezes occur reliably whether in full-featured mode or in Safe Mode.
Initially, I thought the problem was related to my USB Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000, but replacing it with a standard non-USB mouse fixed nothing. The Microsoft Mouse does however freeze up by itself on separate occasions, leaving the system operable with the keyboard (independent of whatever the other problem is).

So my Dell latitude E6400 running fedora 12 (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE) is usually connected to a big screen (1920x1200).
Now each time I boot, X becomes unresponsive shortly before or after login for a couple of minutes, and then goes back to normal. This happens both with and without connection to the big screen.
The error messages associated to this seem to be like this, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is cluttered with them :

I normally start my computer in the morning, walk off for some tea, and come back when X is functioning, but when I'm in a hurry it's pretty, or very, annoying ... drinking tea / coffee to wait for a computer to start is something people did in the 90s, it shouldn't be default behaviour in 2010 ...
I have a problem with Kontak (PIM). When it starts it freezes with the "tip of day " showing and i cant close or cancel the tip of day or disable it.The program does not respond to any mouse inputs.I am running opensuse 11.3 KDE All other programs work if started individually.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor some reason my disc I burned for ubuntu desktop 10.10 freezes when I get to the ubuntu logo with the 5 dots. I am able to install ubuntu server just fine.
I tried to install desktop on top of server using sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop and then whenever I reboot it freezes during startup.
I think it might be my swap partition. I recall seeing a blip of an error talking about "press C to skip or M to start maintenence" or something like that. It never stayed on the screen long enough for me to read it.
I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.
I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!
This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason
I've been using 10.04 for a while now with no problems but for some reason it started freezing on the splash screen, 2 of my keyboards lights start blinking and thats it, I've tried with recovery mode and no luck either. The thing is I don't remember doing anything wrong.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was running update manager in ubuntu and my system froze completely. I had no other option but to manually switch of the PC. Then after restarting the PC I got some error lines but I can't remember what they said. It didn't matter which linux version I chose from GRUB, nothing worked. Today when starting up shortly after the Ubuntu 10.10 screen with the blinking dots below it I see a dos type screen with only a flashing cursor and nothing happens.
Is there any way I can fix this? Or repair the ubuntu installation without loosing all my data/settings etc? I'm running now from the live CD. I can access the disk drive that has ubuntu installed on it. I have XP running on a separate disk and I can boot into XP from my motherboard's bios boot menu.
i got an pclinuxos LXDE version on my netbook. i installed abiword on it. after that, synaptic and any other package manager refuses. synaptic freezes as soon as i start it up. only a reboot will close it. i searched google, found this: [URL]. i don't understand the instruction there, but it seems to be the same problem i had. i believe they suggest reinstalling. this is a mission-critical-workstation, i can't afford an downtime more then 1 day. so i can't do a re-install. (duo settings i have to apply again, this would take long)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed openSUSE earlier today, I have Windows 7 on this PC too. I installed using all the default option.Installed fine, booted up. Working perfectly. Used it for a few hoursI changed an option to enable the desktop effects (the 3d effects). When I did this the computer froze completely, I had to pull the plug.When I rebooted the computer froze on reboot.I get to the point where it displays the graphical screen, then the screen switches to the brighter green, higher resloution graphical screen. I get the white progress bar under the chameleon. It gets to half way. Then the mouse cursor becomes quite flickery and slow, and it doesn't progress any further. Again to reboot I have to pull the plug. (Although interestingly the contrast buttons (F4/F5 on my laptop still work).Steps I have taken.I have repeated the install, does exaclty the same thing.
I have downloaded the 32 bit version (I originally installed the 64 bit) and again resinstalled - does exactly the same thing)I have hit escape so I could see the not graphical boot screen, unfortunately it get past that, goes to the graphic screen/progress bar and then hangs at the same place.The LiveCD (running from the CD still works fine)I really dont know what to try. If nothing else could you tell me the quickest way to remove it, delete the grup bootloader and recover the space it took from my partitions.
when i login, Ubuntu asks to install 3D Drivers for my grapics card. Can i make a script in openSUSE to do this as well? Or even better, check for drivers on startup and then install the drivers for the graphics card on boot.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.
After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.
i have running more than 50 servers with openSUSE 11.2 for a long time without any problems. After upgrading 30 server to 11.3 some of them are freeezing after one or two days. I can ping, but i cannot log in. At the console i can type in the user and the nothing happens, system has to reboot.
All servers are Hewlett Packard Proliant G4,G5,G6 with 32bit and 64bit. No errors or hints in the systemlog.
I love opensuse as it's much snappier than MINT. But my system 11.3 is freezing while booting. I pressed ESC during splash and can see messages on the screen. The last message is ATA3 Exception EMASK. I have uploaded the /var/boot.msg here klogd 1.4.1, log source = ksys - Suse Freeze - CuQAd3dg - Pastebin. There are no other log files!

Yesterday I migrated from 11.0 to 11.3 (32-bit version) and began customizing personal desktop settings once everything seemed to be working OK. Today I continued customizing the personal desktop settings. Now everything freezes up during shutdown.
The screen goes blank with the arrow pointer frozen in place. Hitting enter or ctrl-alt-esc has no effect. One time, I walked away for 30 minutes to see if it would resolve itself, but there was no effect.
I saw someone is having a similar problem with the 64-bit version, but there were no responses. Where do I go from here?
11.4 has been a bit of a pain. The broadcom driver, b44, for the Broadcom 44xx/47xx, freezes my system. I cannot be the only victim of this faulty driver.
The driver is not for the WLAN, but rather for 10/100 ethernet on a Dell Insprion 1720 laptop.
im reinstalling 11.4 on my laptop and I can't seem to get past the automatic configuration. It installed perfect earlier, and I'm not sure its freezing this time.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed debian 7 lxde from lxde cd. It freezes on logging in (i.e keyboard doesn't work,desktop freezes and only mouse pointer works.But,I can't select or view anything.Only mouse pointer can be moved.).
But,If I do not login with the display manager and login (my username and not root) via another terminal like tty3 or tty4 using alt+ctrl+F3 or F4,everything works fine.
Every time I launch Firefox and go visiting some websites, I notice it freezes for about 10 seconds. Not always in the same websites, but it always happens sometime in the first 2 or 3 minutes of running. I can see the hard disk led is ON all the time the browser is hung.
My operating system is Linux and I don't currently have any extension/plugin installed here.
I have no form completion, no history and have no more than 20-30 bookmarks.
Has somebody noticed something similar, or know how can I debug this to find out what Firefox is doing or trying to do?
I have used a few versions of ubuntu now and each one seems to encounter the same problem loading ubuntu.
I am using a Samsung x05 laptop.
If I have a mouse, printer or even wired internet connection plugged in at any point during startup I will not be able to get past the login screen. I can login fine but the system freezes at the beige screen before the desktop appears.
I recently partitioned and installed Windows xp, which doesn't have the same problem, so I presume it is some kind of incompatibility between Ubuntu and my laptop?
I am trying to install Xubuntu on a old toshiba satellite A55. I threw in the live CD and did the try without any changes to your computer. The starts to load, when it finishes loading, and I can finally start poking around it freezes right away. When it freezes the graphics get a bit messed up, little ghost images next to their actual image appear (like a second icon of the same thing slightly offset, and blue/white) I had the same problem with Mint. Only thing I have been able to get running is puppy linux.

Everything was starting up fine, then a few times it would freeze during boot, now every time it freezes during the boot. I removed quiet, and added nosplash to the grub startup option, and I see that where it waiting is on a line that says: scsi4 : mvsas There is no disk activity at this time, and it'll sit there forever.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just tried to upgrade from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 (64bit). Everything went fine until the machine tried to reboot. Now it stops while booting on the screen where the ubuntu logo and five red dots appear. I'm unable to open a terminal (alt+ctrl+f1 does not result in anything) and the only thing I've been able to do is to reboot the machine.
If I reboot by pressing ctrl+alt+delte I see some information for a short while, it seems that the boot stops on "checking battery state" I've googled this, and it seems that quite a few other have had the same problem, but they have been able to open a terminal, any ideas on how I can do this? Or any other suggestions on how to fix this?
My system is a dekstop with a Nvidia GTX 260 graphics card. I recently installed the newest Nvidia driver. I forgot to mention that I did an online upgrade.
I did a fresh install of 11.04 a week ago and I had my screen saver set to run 'Floating Feet' after 15 minutes idle time. Twice I've left my computer, and returned, clicked the mouse, and found my computer frozen on the screen saver. I was able to recover once by hitting the power button, which brought up the shut down/restart options and normal desktop. It hasn't happened since I turned off the screen saver, so I'll just leave it that way until a solution arises.

/device/sdc2 ... is not ready or present
Then Ubuntu just freezes. I am using Ubuntu Natty, if that helps. I am currently unable to get into Ubuntu without a LiveCD.
As the title say, I'm having this odd problem, consistently, if I disconnect the USB keyboard from the box, it hangs after initializing md0 (raid of 10 sata disks).. The cursor blinks, but it never gets further, I've had it hanging like that for a day (I started the box before I went to school, and when I got home, I found that it never booted completely)
If I connect the keyboard, the box boots fine..
I have attempted Ubuntu, Debian, and Wuby, and none of them work so the problem is not a simple Cd drive error. Ubuntu and Debian freeze at roughly the same point in the installation. Wuby installs succesfully in Windows, but then dies in attempted startup. Ubuntu won't even boot from the CD. I have tried the various "safe" installers, text only methods, none work. Strangely enough, I have managed to get Knoppix to boot from DVD. I would prefer to get Ubuntu running than Knoppix however.

When I select it from the grub menu, everything acts normally until the login screen, which freezes immediately (i.e. before I can select my user account or type in my password).I installed from the full openSUSE DVD and chose the GNOME desktop. Before installing, I took openSUSE for a test drive with the GNOME LiveCD and everything seemed to work fine.
