I'm running openSUSE 11.1. When I'm in Gnome or KDE or any Desktop session, the X server keeps running when I do an init 3, (i.e.) I'm still in the GUI instead of going to the console. When I type runlevel it shows that I'm in runlevel 3, but the X server is still running. The X server is not getting killed on an init 3.
View 2 RepliesIn December I finally filled up my root partition and broke Suse 11.1. I therefore resized my partitions and installed Suse 11.3 on /root. I didn't not touch my /home partition.
I notice that when I leave my machine and come back the screen has locked. I have tried to turn off the screensaver, but it hasn't worked. I have Googled, but unfortunately the screen shots don't look like what I have and the instructions to stop this do not seem to match what I am seeing on the screen.
Is there a way to do this via the command line?

In short. I've cracked open the initrd file of the openSuSE installer to have a look - I've determined it's an initramfs which by default would execute ''/init''GREAT! But not so much... init should find the installation files et cetera - but I haven't a clue how it does this because it's a compiled binary So, my question is this - do anyone know where I can find the source for this file ?
If not, who should I contact to find it? I really, really need to look at it.. I'm trying to throw the installer over to a USB harddrive (with multiple other installers, each in their own directory etc. etc.) - the idea is to create a USB HDD with installation mediums for the OS's I use so the recommended methods of dedicating a partition to openSuSE is not going to work...
Currently I run into a rather confusing case. I met bellow mount errors when I was about to enter the rescue mode on SLES11:

Then I tried to extract the rescue image and to see what's wrong in the scrip, but it turn out that there is no boot script under /etc/init.d directory, either a similar one that may as it.
where is the script or which is the script does the mount things in rescue image?
PLUS, I can see /etc/init.d/boot script in SLES10 rescue image.
Boot of a new minimal system hangs on "Stopping save kernel messages" or "stopping system v runlevel compatibility". I have ubuntu minimal iso x86_64 from usb stick created with unetbootin (don't have a cd drive on the machine in question), and after that I didsudo aptitude install gnome-terminal network-manager-gnome gdm geditsudo rebootnever got a system back. Annoyingly I can't boot into the recovery mode either, and it seems the keyboard is only semi-responsive (i.e. many dead keys when at the grub menu).qualms about reinstalling, but I've done this a few times and ended up at the same place every time.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble with printing a PDF that is in landscape mode. When I tell Okular or Adoble Reader to print a document in landscape mode, the text is Illegible. If I tell it to print as portrait mode, then I can read the text but the end is cut off and there is no way for me to tell Okular or Adobe Reader what the margins are. That option was grayed out.
I'm having another problem: When I cancel the job from the CUPS interface, it says it canceled the job but the printer keeps going and finishes whether I want it to or not. With 11.2, I was able to have it set up so that when I told it to stop the printer, it did so right away. Why can't I get the printer to stop in the middle of a job if I see something wrong with it so that I don't have to waste ink?
Whenever my debian based server is rebooted 35 times it does an automatic disc check. When it does this and completes the disc check it doesn't properly establish network comms and I can't get in using SSH and I can't even ping the server.If I reboot again, it operates as normal but the problem is that the server is remote to me and I need to travel to the site when this occurs.

Problem: When I attempt to debug my program with breakpoints set the debugger does not stop at breakpoint. Message in gdb window is:

Attempted fix: Some forum posts suggest KDevelop upgrade. Upgraded from 3.5.4 to 3.5.5; gdb upgrade not available in openSUSE.
Other posts recommend assurance that debugger options are properly set. KDevelop Project Options has Compiler Flags -O0 -g3 with "debug" configuration.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been dual booting 10.10 with Windows7 for about a month. Today is the first time I've encountered a serious problem.
This morning, nothing functioned properly after trying to open several programs. The computer seemed to be "frozen", although the mouse was working fine.
I decided to reboot, but then encountered an even bigger problem.
It failed to boot and got this message: no init found. try passing init= bootarg
The problem now is that it requires a Live CD session and I keep getting this: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
In case it matters, I didn't install 10.10 from an ISO, I just upgraded from 10.04.
Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot! System froze this morning, I restarted and it is now failing to boot. Starts loading grub and I get this message:

I booted with 9.04 LiveCD discovered the drive could not be mounted-ran fsck -ln and it told me the drive has no valid partition table. I have had intermittent problems mounting flash drives before this, so I'm kind of worried it might be a hardware issue.Also have files on that drive I would rather not lose, so reinstalling is hopefully a last resort.
I just installed the ventrilo server daemon on CentOS 5.3 and I'm having 2 issues with the init.d script I wrote. Issue 1: the stop command does not work. I suspect due to an issue with where the daemon puts the pid file. Issue 2: chkconfig says that the "service ventrilo does not support chkconfig". The script is below.

I have installed Mysql in Ubuntu 9, for the use of roundcube database.After installing iam getting the error like this

I have made a backupscript that simply copy files to an external harddisk with the command cp -a.
Before the backup script start I'll mount the external harddisk with mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/USB/backup. And after the script the external harddisk will be unmounted.
This all works great. But when the user is forgotten his external device the script is written the files to the system partition and that is a big problem.I've seen a lot of backup scripts who has the same problem.
Can I build in some routine that is the mounting is not working that the script is stopping?
Or are there some better ideas to avoid this?
How can I find the order of stated services in boot process? For example I want to check which one runs first: /etc/fstab or networking? I am using ubuntu server 10.04

At boot, the system hangs before reaching runlevel 5. No X, no alternative non graphical shells.
Since I have a video card Radeon 9200 I checked the ATI issues. I am running with the radeonhd drivers as suggested. If I boot in failsafe mode, X starts with a really low definition (800x640?), but when booting normally, the system hangs again.
I tried to create a xorg.conf file. Sax hangs the same way as when booting. I created anyway a reasonable xorg.conf using

I have two ubuntu servers. I have upgraded them to 10.04. Now I have serious problems at startup: iscsitarget and heartbeat scripts do not start all the times I reboot.I have installed monit to try to start iscsitarget and heartbeat and guess what? This has happened twice before, so I really need to figure out what keeps happening, otherwise I can't continue to use linux. i reinstalled both times before. i think that this is caused by a process that prevents me from using the hard drive, because when I try to check the disk in the terminal or in gparted, it says Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1. Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?
Also, in the disk utility, in the lower right corner of the filesystem it has a spinning "loading wheel".(i'm not sure if that means anything)
I am using ubuntu 10.10, but am not sure what kernel I am using, but i tried a few different kernel options(there's three of them at start up). safe mode does not work either.
Im am building a Linux distro. It will be very tiny and fast.
I only have a minimal linuxkernel (bzImage) who is 1,2 mb big. And then I have Busybox who is 174,6 kb big.
The commands in busybox is: cd, ls, mkdir, rmdir, wget, httpd, clear, rm, poweroff, halt, reboot, fdisk, mount, umount, free, and cp.
When I compiled the kernel i use initramfs/initrd function and point it to a folder where initrd/initramfs source is.
The kernel works OK with others initramfs/initrd files. But not with my own.
