this is a strange one. running 11.2 pae 32 bit kernel with all the most recent updates and gnome. This is a fresh install. I built the machine, and then installed all my repositories and software, and used the machine for about 2 days, and now when I log in it hangs on logging into gnome. it's strange because the wireless notification about available wireless networks is in the top left corner of the screen, and nothing else happens. I can log in as root.I also had this issue before I formatted the machine (that's why I formatted)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).
In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).
Is it possible to add a menu option to allow me to open a program as root from inside the application browser window? In windows if you hold ctrl and right click a program icon your given the option to "run as" (windows equivalent of sudo). Is there a way to get something like that in the application browser in gnome?

Tomorrow I decided to dedicate 100% of my disk to opensuse! So I backed up the files from the remaining windows partition, deleted them and expanded the /home partition. Well, I ran into some problems during first boot. I referred to an article at the wiki and fixed it. Although I did some small fixing manually at the fstab file. The system booted! But I can't browse anywhere outside the local network! At this forum I found some info regarding the dmesg |tail command. Here is my output:

I use KVpnc and openVPN to connect to my desktop at work from my laptop at home. This works fine, I can reach my desktop at the office from my laptop at home. The only problem is that when the Vpn connection is active I cannot use a browser on my laptop. In fact, I cannot connect to anything outside the office Vpn (like mail, chat etc).
I suspected it had something to do with the DNS servers at the office not being reachable from the Vpn so I added my "regular" DNS servers to the /etc/resolve.conf used when the Vpn is active, I added two lines in total on the form "nameserver <ip-address>". This did not solve the problem. I have searched the KVpn forums without finding anything, and the same goes for the openSUSE forums. Does anybody else experience the same problem?
I have openSUSE 11.2 64-bit KDE, I have installed it with lan cable connected, install updates and than switch to wireless.Everything worked great until I went to my girlfreind with laptop, there I can connect to router, use Skype but can't browse pages with firefox, can't install packages with YAST Also wired connection gives the same result but her PC have no problem with Internet.I have traied ifup, deleting /etc/resolv/conf, disabling NetworManager routing options with no succes

Code:
$ sudo mount -t udf,iso9660 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvd,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
/var/log/messages isn't very helpful, either:
Code:

Jul 15 15:15:56 bkorb-dt kernel: sr0: rw=0, want=68, limit=4

I burned it with K3B and it gets the same result trying to mount it. K3B seems to know that the image is an iso9660 and is able to display the various 9660 id fields just fine. It just won't mount.
I'm not able to connect to my university's internet facilities under openSUSE 11.4. I have been able to connect in the past and I am still able to connect in Windows 7.When I try to connect to the university WiFi, a valid IP address is assigned to me and the gateway address appears to be correct, so I don't see a problem in the DHCP negotations. Same with my university's Ethernet: I get a valid IP address, but I can't connect to the internet.When I browse to any site with Chromium/Chrome/ Firefox/lynx/curl, the page is stuck at "Sending request". I have tried disabling my firewall - that didn't solve anything.I don't know what else I can try and the campus' network administrators are puzzled. How can I resolve my issue?

View 11 Replies View RelatedIt is very well known that running VLC as root in KDE is easy: in the menu editor, in the Advanced tab, you check "Run as a different user", giving the name of the user in your system. Then VLC runs from root, playing everything placed inside the user's folders and everything placed in other hard disks (not root's disk though).
So far, so good.
Is there a possibility to run VLC as root in Gnome? I mean, without compiling the program myself with the option --enable-run-as-root. Is there any immediate method like in KDE?
I run a minecraft server on my debian/gnome desktop and I need access to the files in the root folder and to the mysql folder but i cant log as root. i tried installing sudo and it didnt work. i know the su and su - but I want to change the files manually.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Debian 5.0.2 about a year ago, my first encounter with Debian and first serious look at Linux. I never got it right. Some software wouldn't work after installing. This week I decided to just start all over. I installed Debian 5.0.5 on a second disk. I seems to be better. Software that failed before works now!
Problem 1:
I ended up with two possible boot up choices in GRUB, but they both run 5.0.5 w/ Gnome. Why two? How do I know which to keep and how do I get rid of the other?
Problem 2:
Previously, I could boot into a command console by interrupting the normal boot. I don't get that chance now. It goes right to Gnome. I can't boot as root in Gnome. How do I get on as root?
We have setup Squeeze a Test machine , just for some tests, without network, Internet etc. and we need to allow root login in Gnome.

AllowRoot=truebut still doesn't work.
